Inhalt: Scientific collaborations shape ideas as well as innovations and are both the substrate for, and the outcome of, academic careers. Recent studies show that gender inequality is still present in many scientific practices ranging from hiring to peer-review processes and grant applications. In this work, we investigate gender-specific differences in collaboration patterns of more than one million computer scientists over the course of 47 years. We explore how these patterns change over years and career ages and how they impact scientific success. Our results highlight that successful male and female scientists reveal the same collaboration patterns: compared to scientists in the same career age, they tend to collaborate with more colleagues than other scientists, seek innovations as brokers and establish longer-lasting and more repetitive collaborations. However, women are on average less likely to adopt the collaboration patterns that are related with success, more likely to embed into ego networks devoid of structural holes, and they exhibit stronger gender homophily as well as a consistently higher dropout rate than men in all career ages.
Three worlds of marriage effects? Gendered marriage earning differences in the United States, Germany, and Sweden

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Being married is associated with many advantages. However, we do not know enough about the actual impact of entering marriage on individuals’ earnings, especially for women. In this paper, I examine the immediate and the short-term impact of marriage on men’s and women’s earnings in the United States, Germany, and Sweden. Studying the impact of marriage on earnings in three distinct socio-political settings provides insights into the context dependency of the link between marriage and earnings. Fixed effects models show that marriage transitions are not associated with women's earnings in the United States and Sweden. For German women, I find an earnings penalty for marriage. Once I adjust for selection into employment, I find that employed German women with low employment propensities may experience instantaneous earnings boosts when they enter marriage, but that among women who are more firmly attached to the labor market, there is a short-term marriage penalty. For men in all three countries, I find no effect of marital transitions once employment likelihood is taken into account." (author's abstract)

Autor/in:
Raadts-Misegaes, Stefan
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This study aims at detecting specific personality predictors of stationary psychotherapy outcomes to describe 'faking good' as a dysfunctional male behaviour to deny illness. The data used in the study come from a survey of 1636 male and female patients at a German clinic of psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy in 2011 and 2012. Prior to therapy, the patients completed the PSSI (Kuhl/Kazén 2010) and the SCL-90-R (Derogatis 2001). After finishing therapy, they again completed the SCL-90-R to control for therapeutic success. Correlations were calculated between the PSSI scales and the level of significant positive and negative changes in SCL-90 scales (min. = 0, max. = 9). For male patients, high scores in negativistic personality were expected to predict the positive outcome and low scores to predict failure. Mediation analyses for both years supported the hypothesis, with self-critical personality scores as the mediator." (author's abstract)

Inhalt: Undoubtedly, in spite of all those efforts done during the years, the mentality towards the superiority of male over female is still being reflected in the works of art written by men. Joseph Conrad, the Polish author, who wrote great masterpieces in English, is not an exception. His great work of art, Heart of Darkness, reflects multiple perspectives towards women. By applying a Feminist approach towards this novel, this article tends to present an analytical overview of the mentality of men towards women in the written work of art, Heart of Darkness.
The trafficking of men in Cambodia: how masculinities challenge notions of victimhood
Autor/in:
Eastmond, Oonagh
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This paper addresses the exploitation of Cambodian men on Thai fisher boats. Exploitation is enabled through gender stereotypes that prohibit Cambodian men to identify themselves as victims. In addition, institutions dealing with legal support of victims are based on gender stereotypes. Thus, mainly sexual exploitation and female victims are focused by organizations of support and the state. There are no legal regulations to persecute exploited men and trafficking of men." Inhalt: Objective: the objective of this study is (re) thinking health actions transiting in that territory, and, in fact, such actions include the entire universe of feelings, doubts and uncertainties that permeate male thinking when it comes to the rectal exam. Method: the method is the design of test characterized as a reflective exercise on a theme, seeking a new way of looking at the subject. Results: masculinity is constructed by the influence of the social imaginary, and cannot ignore symbolic aspects that affect the decision to take the examination. This examination does not only affect the prostate, it touches on the symbolism of the aspects of what is "being a man". Conclusion: it is for health professionals to understand what happens in the "man's world" in order to think about health actions to reduce morbidity and mortality rates of this disease that has been affecting the health and quality of life of men.

Autor/in:
Lange, Anja
Inhalt: The Euromaidan revolution is already the third political revolution in Ukraine in recent times. Men and women participated equally in this revolution, but women are often described as "only" being helpers while men "made" the revolution and actively fought at the barricades. The article aims to reflect the gender roles of men and women in this revolution. Interviews, blog notes and scientific articles are utilised to show the tasks and responsibilities of men and women at the Maidan.
Genetische Ursachen sexueller Dimorphismen bei komplexen Erkrankungen

Autor/in:
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The most frequent conditions affecting populations in developed countries are cardiovascular diseases, tumours, metabolic disorders, autoimmune and psychiatric diseases. All these disorders belong to the category of complex diseases, as their development is influenced by genetic as well as non-genetic factors. Many of these disorders arise with a marked sex/gender bias regarding incidence and/or progression. Differences in the sociocultural roles of men and women resulting in exposition towards different risk factors have been discussed as being causative. Recently, genetic studies have revealed that different genes might predispose men and women towards specific complex diseases. These genes display effects on disease risk preponderantly in one sex. Therefore, sex-/gender-dependent disease prevention measures and therapies appear to be necessary. This article focuses on the genetic aspects of differential disease risks of men and women. We present examples of sex-specific association in humans and in model organisms and discuss possible biological mechanisms and methodological problems." (author's abstract)
