(IAB)
Inhalt: "We propose a new approach to analyzing gender differences in wages. This approach identifies several alternative explanatory mechanisms to account for the sorting of women and men into different types of jobs that offer different levels of reward. Because labor market rewards derive from labor market positions, we study matching processes operating at the micro level that sort workers into existing slots in a given macro-level structure of jobs and associated wages. We focus on the explanation of gender differences in wages at career entry. Analyzing data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth collected between 1979 and 1991, we find that at career entry women earn 84 cents for every dollar men earn. Gender differences in worker characteristics account for only about 30 percent of this wage gap: Gender differences in occupational aspirations have the most important effect, accounting for 16 percent of the wage gap, and gender differences in job-related skills and credentials account for about 14 percent of the wage gap. Gender differences in adult family roles have little direct effect. Our analysis further suggests that the external influences of employing organizations and network processes on gender differences in occupational and industrial placement at career entry account for another 42 percent of the wage gap." (IAB)
Inhalt: "This paper uses the Syracuse University PSID-GSOEP Equivalent Data File to explore women's employment patterns over two four-year periods in the American and West German panel surveys. Four major theoretical traditions illuminate differences between employed and nonemployed women. Static labor supply models account for demographic differences. A dynamic life cycle framework finds greater stability in the lives of the nonemployed. Cultural and institutional factors underlie the to 15 percent higher employment rates among American women. Finally, greater uncertainty reflected in divorce, poverty, and a weaker safety net are also associated with higher levels of women's employment in the United States." (author's abstract)

Titelübersetzung:Scheidung, Geschlechterrolle und Expansion der Hochschulbildung

Quelle: Higher education : the international journal of higher education and educational planning, Vol. 32 (1996) No. 1, S. 1-22
(IAB)
Inhalt: "In Western societies the past two decades have witnessed a great increase of women's participation in higher education and a multiplication of responsibilities as a result of the expanded role of women. This article examines higher education enrollment between 1970 and 1987 in the United Kingdom and the United States. It is guided by a theoretical model contending that educational expansion occours where people choose education as an adaptation to increased deprivation and uncertainty. By linking the expanded role of women to the expansion of women's participation in higher education, and by using the rising rate of divorce as an indicator of the increased disenfranchisement among women in partiarchal societies, this study attempts to uncover the hidden forces behind the recent expansion of women's participation in higher education. Multiple regression is used for the statistical analysis. The results show that the divorce rate is positively related to women's enrollment in higher education in the United States. The results also show divergent enrollment patterns between the two sexes regarding the effect of unemployment in both the United States and the United Kingdom. It is argued that gender role expectation is crucial to understanding the different effects of divorce and unemployment on the divergent enrollment patterns of men and women. The article also explores important differences in the areas of educational opportunities, the magnitude of the impact of divorce, government policies regarding women's welfare, and the differing role of credentials in social mobility in the two countries under study." (IAB)
