Inhalt: Context: The persistent low female participation in male-dominated trades is not attracting a high level of public attention and policy action. There are determined, yet adhoc actions by advocates in response to evidence that economic benefits will be derived for industry and women through increased female participation in the male-dominated trades. Occupational segregation of the trades remains resistant to change.
Methods: To better understand the barriers limiting female participation in the male-dominated trades from the perspective of young women, this PhD study features interviews with female secondary students, complemented by interviews with industry stakeholders and a quantitative analysis of VET and trade participation data. The three primary research questions are: 1) What is the extent of gender segregation in vocational education and training (VET) and typically male-dominated trades in Australia, and how does this compare internationally? 2) Why do very few female students choose male-dominated trades as their job pathway? 3) What can be done, particularly in the education and training sectors, to increase female interest in, and take-up of, the male-dominated trades?
Findings: The results of this research showed that the composition of trade-qualified females in male-dominated trades is persistently low at 2-3%. The views of young women affirmed the evidence showing system-wide barriers limit female interest in these trades. Most influential is that gender stereotypes of work are set by Year 10 and that female enrolment in Maths (a pre-requisite for male-dominated careers) is low; these trades are seen as “jobs for the boys who don’t do academic,” and the fear of intimidation and harassment deters young women. Low enrolment of female students in male-dominated trade courses indicates that this entrenched occupational segregation of the trades will remain resistant to change for some time to come.
Conclusion: The findings indicate that ad hoc responses to overcome gender segregation of the trades is not effective. Influenced by systems theory and a social ecological model (SEM) of change, the researchers promote the need for sustained, nation-wide awareness and action involving VET and school sectors, industry, government and trade unions to attract more women into male-dominated trades.

Inhalt: This paper examines the persistent gender gap in electoral politics at the local level in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I argue that the combination of the division of political work and existing social norms regarding the separation of domestic chores contributes to women’s political underrepresentation at the local level. Studying everyday politics in Buenos Aires, a clear division of political work between men and women was found. Only women were in charge of finding solutions to issues of domestic abuse and violence, and of taking care of children, the pregnant, and senior citizens. Using information from Buenos Aires municipalities, I document the gender gap in elected legislative and executive offices at the local level – as well as in non-elected offices within municipal cabinets. It was also found that the types of political work assigned to female activists and candidates reinforce existing stereotypes of women as mothers of the poor.

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article discusses prejudices, stereotypes and discrimination from different perspectives: the theoretical introduction from a sociological perspective frames the socialisational practices of actors within the binary order of gender and desire and highlights selected feminist and queer criticisms. Subsequently, a psychological perspective is applied that proposes the heuristic value of the concept of ambiguity tolerance when analyzing the individual handling of ambiguous situations. Finally, the article employs an empirical perspective that reflects the situation of lgbt* adolescents and young adults. By drawing on data from focus group discussions three common assumptions of unambiguousness were identified. In a concluding outlook the article argues for an interdisciplinary approach of all angles to improve the integration of diversity in the future." (author's abstract)
Visuelle Geschlechterinszenierungen von Musikerinnen
Titelübersetzung:Visual performances of gender by female musicians

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Today, artists can use social media platforms to control both the distribution and marketing of their work as well as their image. The photos, artwork, and music videos artists distribute through these platforms highlight the visual representation patterns and design strategies they use to represent themselves and their gender, and reveal sources of aesthetic inspiration and trends. This essay focuses on female musicians, exploring their representations of self and gender. Using cross-genre examples, we analyse how these platforms and technologies contribute to changing both visual hierarchies and stereotypical gender roles and how these media and tools are being used to design representations of self and gender that go beyond heteronormative gender binaries. We juxtapose different design strategies that blur gender, provoke the viewer, or overcome stereotypical gender representations. We then analyse these strategies in relation to questions of design, that is, to the construction of gender." (author's abstract)

Inhalt: "The article is based on a study by the Institute for Gender and Diversity at the University of Applied Sciences of Eastern Switzerland (FHO) conducted in 2014 and 2015 in eastern Switzerland. The study was designed to investigate the self-description and -perception of girls and young women and their interests and visions of the future. A total of 78 semi-structured, qualitative interviews conducted with girls and young women from three different age groups and schools from different social groups and geographical areas were examined as regards their (gendered) concepts of life and self-concepts. The interviews were evaluated by means of content analysis. The results show that 6- to 9-year-olds are more open to gender-free concepts of life, while 15- to 16-year-olds tend to be more gender-stereotypical. It thus appears that between the ages of 10 and 15 girls take their first decisions in favour of (or against) gender-typical career choices and life planning. Many girls in the older age group, who have gender-atypical interests and abilities, ultimately opted for a typically female profession when taking their first step up the career ladder." Das Narrativ "natürlicher" Mutterliebe und Mütterlichkeit in Literatur und Film
Titelübersetzung:The narrative of natural motherly love in literature and movies

Schlicht, Corinna

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article demonstrates from a historical perspective and in terms of cultural studies research into emotions, which examines affects and feelings in terms of their forms of cultural representation and cultural conditions, how the narrative of motherly care has shaped the cultural understanding of women up to the present day. An analysis of one cinematic (Stephen Daldry's "The Hours") and one literary (Julia Franck's "Die Mittagsfrau") example puts the focus on two works which both adopt a double perspective, that of the mother as well as of the child. They belong to the group of texts which deal with a tabooed field in the femininity discourse, that is the perspective of those mothers who do not selflessly love their children. They are to be understood as critical reflections of biologistic presuppositions about apparently "natural" motherliness, which at the same time, within the culturally anchored binary system, implies the "unnaturalness" of masculine care. Moreover, they must be understood as calling into question the traditional family image in which fathers tend to be excluded from responsibility for a child's emotional well-being because that is narrated as a genuinely female task." The trafficking of men in Cambodia: how masculinities challenge notions of victimhood

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This paper addresses the exploitation of Cambodian men on Thai fisher boats. Exploitation is enabled through gender stereotypes that prohibit Cambodian men to identify themselves as victims. In addition, institutions dealing with legal support of victims are based on gender stereotypes. Thus, mainly sexual exploitation and female victims are focused by organizations of support and the state. There are no legal regulations to persecute exploited men and trafficking of men."
