Inhalt: Context: The persistent low female participation in male-dominated trades is not attracting a high level of public attention and policy action. There are determined, yet adhoc actions by advocates in response to evidence that economic benefits will be derived for industry and women through increased female participation in the male-dominated trades. Occupational segregation of the trades remains resistant to change.
Methods: To better understand the barriers limiting female participation in the male-dominated trades from the perspective of young women, this PhD study features interviews with female secondary students, complemented by interviews with industry stakeholders and a quantitative analysis of VET and trade participation data. The three primary research questions are: 1) What is the extent of gender segregation in vocational education and training (VET) and typically male-dominated trades in Australia, and how does this compare internationally? 2) Why do very few female students choose male-dominated trades as their job pathway? 3) What can be done, particularly in the education and training sectors, to increase female interest in, and take-up of, the male-dominated trades?
Findings: The results of this research showed that the composition of trade-qualified females in male-dominated trades is persistently low at 2-3%. The views of young women affirmed the evidence showing system-wide barriers limit female interest in these trades. Most influential is that gender stereotypes of work are set by Year 10 and that female enrolment in Maths (a pre-requisite for male-dominated careers) is low; these trades are seen as “jobs for the boys who don’t do academic,” and the fear of intimidation and harassment deters young women. Low enrolment of female students in male-dominated trade courses indicates that this entrenched occupational segregation of the trades will remain resistant to change for some time to come.
Conclusion: The findings indicate that ad hoc responses to overcome gender segregation of the trades is not effective. Influenced by systems theory and a social ecological model (SEM) of change, the researchers promote the need for sustained, nation-wide awareness and action involving VET and school sectors, industry, government and trade unions to attract more women into male-dominated trades.

Im toten Winkel - Genderdiskurs und Verkehrsmitteldesign
Titelübersetzung:In the blind spot: gender discourse and vehicle design
Autor/in:
Inhalt: The article aims to analyse the gendering of industrial mass products in the automotive sector using the example of the mobility discourse and to shed light on its historical and social manifestations. The starting point is a definition of design which focuses on its discursive function: Design not only transports meanings but also produces them. Against this backdrop, a discourse analytical perspective is applied to "gendered mobility" - from the historical battle of the sexes around the bicycle to the design of "women's cars" in the recent past. Based on such an analysis of the gendered mobility discourse, the article shows how design participates in the performative production of gender identity/ identities and thus also in the (re-)production of existing hierarchical gender relations in the current growth economy, both on the part of the designers and consumers. This approach is not limited to gender but can be extended to further diversity dimensions and their intersections.

Titelübersetzung:Is the glass ceiling still there? A study of perceived aspects of corporate culture and gender-specific differences in career prospects
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The issue of gender-specific differences as regards career opportunities is still relevant and a matter for controversial debate. Various studies confirm that, in a European comparison, well-educated women's potential in Germany is still not being fully exploited. The study presented here provides an insight into how women and men perceive corporate cultural aspects such as relationships and networks, employee development, staffing and recruitment as well as the presence of women in the workplace with regard to their career prospects. The study is based on an online survey of (potential) managers in a large German company." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article discusses prejudices, stereotypes and discrimination from different perspectives: the theoretical introduction from a sociological perspective frames the socialisational practices of actors within the binary order of gender and desire and highlights selected feminist and queer criticisms. Subsequently, a psychological perspective is applied that proposes the heuristic value of the concept of ambiguity tolerance when analyzing the individual handling of ambiguous situations. Finally, the article employs an empirical perspective that reflects the situation of lgbt* adolescents and young adults. By drawing on data from focus group discussions three common assumptions of unambiguousness were identified. In a concluding outlook the article argues for an interdisciplinary approach of all angles to improve the integration of diversity in the future." (author's abstract)
Barriers to women's representation in academic excellence and positions of power

Inhalt: "Nearly for half a century women's advancement in the workplace has been in a debate. Women’s under-represented in higher education institutions and universities across the globe, and especially in the most powerful or influential posts, is well established. Despite gender equality commitments and women's educational attainment, still, they are underrepresented. Regions and countries may vary in term of culture, achievements and development, but barriers for women's representation in academia are surprisingly similar in many regions. It is found that there are several barriers which women might be experiencing in academia ranging from personal, organizational to societal." (author's abstract)
A didactic tool for gender-sensitive practices in design education

Reina, Marta Isabella; Bucchetti, Valeria
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article presents the results of experimental research conducted as part of a project concerning a didactical tool named 'Design/Gender/Design' which is to be used to introduce gender issues into the training of young designers. The article describes the experimental set-up and students’ results. The intention is to stimulate a discussion about how design should integrate a gender perspective in theory and practice. By observing design as a process of exchange of values and meanings, we aim to understand its responsibility in the diffusion of gender stereotypes, how these gender stereotypes are incorporated into design projects and how they act within and through them, as well as through the sensitivities of designers. Students were asked to respond to design questions concerning gender in order to compile categories of signs targeted at her, him and everybody and covering different aspects (e.g. shapes and sizes, colours, patterns and textures, and typographic elements). Being typical of action research, the experiment allowed students to reflect on the use of gender codes in design and it provided data for researchers to verify assumptions regarding those associations which are implicit when gender is a variable in the design process." Der Einfluss von Gender im Entwicklungsprozess von digitalen Artefakten
Titelübersetzung:The influence of gender on the development of digital artefacts
Autor/in:
Becker, Katja; Herling, Claudia
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The category of gender plays a crucial role not only in the design of digital media, but also in the conceptualisation, production, and use of web-based products and services. In this process, however, female perspectives on both users’ needs and interests as well as on usability are often largely ignored or only considered in stereotypical ways. This constitutes a problem because of the profound - and very one-sided - effects the use of digital media has on users' behaviour, values, and norms. Design is a key factor in this: it guides and facilitates - or interferes with - users' actions, and it also interprets and ranks content by means of visual representation. The impact of design on the multi-layered development of digital artefacts is complex and widely underestimated. This essay analyses how gender codes influence design strategies, methods used in the development process (personas), and individual design elements (colour, typography, etc.)." (author's abstract)
