(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Educational attainment levels in the EU have tended to increase almost continuously over the last decades as a growing proportion of young people have gone on from compulsory schooling to upper secondary programmes and from there to tertiary education. This is especially true for women. Whereas the number of women of working age who had completed tertiary education used to be significantly smaller than the number of men, it is now only marginally less. At present, more women than men in younger age groups have university degrees or the equivalent and fewer have no qualifications beyond basic schooling in all but a few countries. In the EU-25 as a whole, 30% of women aged 30-34 had tertiary level qualifications in 2005 as opposed to 27% of men, whereas among those aged 50-54, the share of women with this level of qualifications was some 3 percentage points smaller than for men - 19% and 22%." (Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The purpose of this study is to gather information on several key aspects of gender and careers. First we seek information on current sectoral and occupational distributions across the member countries. We are interested in both horizontal and vertical segregation, including information on the extent of upward mobility of women in organisations and whether the 'glass ceiling' effect is still evident. Second we seek information on the qualifications held by men and women in employment. The Gender Perspectives Annual Update 2000 contains data from 1999 on the education level of the labour force and we would like to up-date this information and collect new data for the new EU countries. We also seek information on the amount of training provided by employers and the extent to which this differs depending upon part or full time employment. Finally, and importantly, we also seek information on the views, opinions, policies and actions of the social partners on issues to do with gender and careers." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Companies depend on women's labour force participation. Without the employment of women, a great number of companies would not be able to meet their demand for services and products. On the other hand, the income earned by women is an indispensable source to safeguard the livelihood of the majority of households. Women face huge obstacles in almost all aspects of their professional lives. Despite equal commitment to work, they are less successful in their careers than their male colleagues. To ensure the efficient implementation of measures promoting equality on the labour market, it is necessary to analyse in detail the positioning of women and men in a first stage. These analyses can be performed using the 'GM-Syndex' monitoring system. The observation structure of the monitoring system makes it possible to depict labour market interrelations on the basis of 20 basic indicators. The development of the results of 'Gender Mainstreaming Monitoring' is documented in the following. A total of 20 basic indicators is used to depict the diversity of labour market conditions; they can be assigned to the following functional areas: opportunities of labour force participation; positioning in the employment system; risks associated with unemployment; income that can be achieved through gainful employment The basic indicators are weighted equally and may take on values between 0 and 100. The higher a value, the greater the gender-specific differences in the specific area under review. For the year 2005 the GM-Syndex registered a degree of labour-market-relevant inequality between women and men of 32.3 index points (this is only 1.9 index points less than in 1996)." Negotiating work and household demands: effects of conflict management strategies in Dutch households on the labor supply of male and female employees

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This paper explains variation in the labor supply of male and female employees by taking into account differences in conflict management strategies in Dutch households. While existing accounts on labor supply either emphasize household restrictions, firm influences or institutional constraints the approach taken here focuses on strategies of spouses to handle time-based interpersonal workhousehold conflicts. Using a sample of 304 male and 238 female cohabiting employees drawn from 30 Dutch organizations, we analyze how gender moderates the effect of conflict management strategies on labor supply, measured as the amount of actual working hours. Building on role congruity theory, we distinguish between two types of conflict management behavior. 'Agentic' strategies are characterized by a low concern for other, and are usually ascribed to a male gender role. 'Communal' strategies are characterized by a high concern for other and are usually ascribed to a female gender role. OLS and multilevel regression analysis supports two hypotheses. First, working women relying on communal strategies to resolve time-allocation conflicts with their male partners will be more successful in achieving their objective to work more hours than women who don't use communal strategies. Second, labor supply of working men increases with their use of agentic strategies. The findings support the proposition from role congruity theory that (in-)congruence between the (male) provider role and a female gender role explains gender differences in the impact of interpersonal conflict management behavior on labor supply." The geographic mobility of dual-earner couples : does gender ideology matter?

Inhalt: "The study examines the geographic mobility of dual-earner couples using data from the German Socio-economic Panel. Although the predictions of the microeconomic family migration model are by and large met, gender ideology also plays a significant role in the explanation of family migration behavior. Splitting the sample of dual-earners into traditional and egalitarian couples reveals that job-related characteristics of men statistically dominate those of women in traditional couples. In egalitarian couples, such gender bias cannot be found. Male and female characteristics have the same effect on family migration behavior." (author's abstract)
