Inhalt: "The paper deals with a household type that to date has rarely been in the focus of gender research: families with a female breadwinner earning the major part of the household income. Drawing on the results of a research project that has been realized in the years 2008-2011, the paper analyses this untraditional household type with both quantitative and qualitative methods. In the first part, data from the German Socio-Economic Panel (GSOEP) is analyzed to get a clearer picture of the quantitative development of female breadwinner families and the composition of this group. It is shown that the status of a female breadwinner can stem from a voluntary decision, e.g. when women have a better position on the Labor market than their partners, or from an involuntary constellation, e.g. when the partner is unemployed or disabled. As multivariate analyses Show, the male partner's situation contributes much more to the explanation of the female breadwinner constellation than the characteristics of the female partner. In the second part the paper focuses on qualitative results of the project, namely on the question of how female breadwinners actually deal with their untraditional role. Particular attention is paid to female breadwinners in low income groups, with flexible work and discontinuous careers. Analyzing interview data, it is shown how these women happened to become female breadwinners and how they deal with it. As it is shown, different types of female breadwinners employing a range of strategies can be identified. It also becomes clear that the actual gender arrangements do not necessarily reflect a preference or a voluntary choice, and that a female breadwinner does not automatically lead to a shift of gender roles in the family. The final section of the article Shows that labor markets, social policy and the overall institutional framework in Germany are actually not prepared to support female breadwinner families adequately."
