(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This paper examines the interplay between intensifying competition among scientific institutions, on the one hand, and career opportunities of young scientist, on the other hand, using chemistry-departments in German universities and non-academic research institutes as an example. Drawing on Bourdieu, the authors construct and analyze the filed in which institutional competition takes place. The power relations in the field are structured by the relative amount of 'pure scientific capital' and/or 'institutional capital' available. In an analysis of professorial appointments they show that the field's structure has little impact on junior scientsits' career opportunities. In contrast to the US, where pervasive institutional competition goes hand in hand with a high degree of social closure in academic careers, the authors find that career opportunities are (still) relatively open in the German case, in spite of growing competition. This openness is due to the special institutional framework that provides the German academic field with a relatively high degree of autonomy. As recent changes in science policy aim to alter the institutional framework, they also jeopardize the autonomy of the academic field." (author's abstract)

Titelübersetzung:Women's careers and barriers in science : promotional programs at universities in Saxony-Anhalt from the contexts of society and equal opportunity policy

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "With regard to their academic staff, German universities are still strongholds of the patriarchy. This report outlines historical and contemporary reasons for this situation, highlights the implementation of gender policies in universities so far, sketches out characteristics of East and West German biographies in academia, elaborates the early and intense juridical efforts and actual realization of gender mainstreaming by the state of Saxony-Anhalt, and presents in this context results from the monitoring of support programmes to enhance female career opportunities at universities and universities of applied sciences. Main methodological tool were interviews with grant holders that were conducted at the beginning and at the end of the support phase. The analysis of the interviews as well as the documented discussion at the concluding workshop show - notwithstanding the limited number of grant holders and the constricted scope of structural effects - the success of both programmes. Finally, the report presents some conclusions for future programmes on gender equality that necessarily go beyond the actual shaping of programmes since the effects of such programmes are dependent on macro-social developments, characteristics of universities as specific organizations, and contemporary life contexts of female academics." Mommy tracking single women in academia when they are not mommies
Autor/in:
Cummings, Helene A.
Quelle: Women's studies international forum, Vol. 28 (2005) No. 2-3, S 222-231
Inhalt: "The issue of mommy tracking is usually related to women who are wives and mothers and have less time for their career as a result of the work related to these roles. Less is known and written about the single female childless academic whose busy life evolves around caring work, but with little to no support via social policy or administrative support. These women are often put in the precarious position of mommy tracking when they are not mommies. When it might be thought that these women have more time for all sorts of work-related and family-related tasks, it is found that overall, they have less time and less success in the halls of academe." Dalhoff, Jutta
Quelle: G+G Wissenschaft, Jg. 5 (2005) Nr. 3, S. 7-14
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The article describes and analyses gender-specific vertical segregation in German
academia and research institutions with special regard to the medical sciences (vertical
segregation: the portion of women sinks with rising qualification and position). Starting
from the most important explanatory approaches, best-practice-examples of structures
and measures on the national and European level are pointed out. All of them have
the same target: to accelerate a just participation of women and men in research and
teaching." (author's abstract)|
Gender issues : women's participation in the sciences has increased, but agencies need to do more to ensure compliance with title IX
Autor/in:
Ashby, Cornelia M.
Quelle: United States Government Accountability Office; Washington, 2004. 55 S.
Inhalt: "Because of concerns about women's access to opportunities in the sciences, this report addresses: how the Department of Education (Education), Department of Energy (Energy), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and National Science Foundation (NSF) ensure that federal grant recipient institutions comply with Title IX in math, engineering, and science; what data show about women's participation in these fields; and what promising practices exist to promote their participation. Researchers reviewed legislation and regulations to identify all areas of compliance relevant to each federal agency; interviewed officials at each agency; gathered documentation to identify agency activities to ensure compliance with Title IX; analyzed data from the Office of Civil Rights and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission; gathered data and interviewed officials at the Department of Justice; visited seven research universities to interview officials, students, and faculty; analyzed national data from Education and NSF on women's participation and experiences in the sciences; reviewed literature about women in the sciences and challenges to preparing for and pursuing careers in the sciences; spoke with students and practitioners about promising practices to promote women's participation; reviewed documentation on how data were collected and performed electronic tests to look for missing or out-of-range values; and reviewed the methodology of studies and reports using generally accepted social sciences principles as the basis for understanding results. The four agencies had made efforts to ensure that grantees complied with Title IX in the sciences by performing several compliance activities (e.g., investigating complaints and providing technical assistance), although most had not conducted all required monitoring activities. Women's participation in the sciences has increased substantially in the last 3 decades, especially in the life sciences, such as biology. The proportion of women science students has grown, but to a lesser extent at the graduate level than the undergraduate level. Meanwhile, the proportion of faculty in the sciences who are women has also increased, but they still lag behind men faculty in terms of salary and rank. However, studies indicate that experience, work patterns, and education levels can largely explain these differences. Studies also suggest that discrimination may still affect women's choices and professional progress. Several examples of agencies and grantees that have instituted practices designed to foster greater women's participation in the sciences were found. While some of the practices are aimed at encouraging more women to pursue the sciences, others provide time off and fewer teaching duties so faculty can balance work and family life. Finally, a few practices seek to expand the recruiting pool for jobs in the sciences and make them more attractive to women. Seven appendixes include: study objectives, scope, and methodology; national laboratories and technical centers; legal events and cases involving Title IX; mathematics, engineering, and science grant programs funded by the four agencies; comparison of enrollment status; comparison of enrollment and degrees earned; and comments from Education." Gender and academic careers in cross-national perspective : preliminary results from a WEU survey in Poland and Germany
Autor/in:
Majcher, Agnieszka
Quelle: Institut für Politikwissenschaft, FB 06 Erziehungswissenschaft und Sozialwissenschaften, Universität Münster; Münster (Training paper / Women in European Universities, Research and Training Network), 2004. 50 S.
Inhalt: "This paper presents preliminary findings from a WEU international survey of the academic men and women in Poland and Germany. In this paper we focus on selected aspects of academic careers linked to tensions that may arise from different and conflicting roles men and women play in professional and private spheres. We attempted to propose an explanatory framework that would allow us to explain cross-national differences between career patterns in both countries as well as the extend of gender differences within the countries. This explanatory framework is linked to different university cultures and organizational aspects academic careers as well as different contexts and histories of higher education feminization processes. In Germany they would be based on negative or discriminatory integration of women into German academia and in Poland the integration took through 'loyalty contract' with all positive and negative consequences (e.g. acceptance of patriarchal and paternalistic academic culture and resistance to the feminist discourse). We found that barriers and hindrances related to the problems with reconciliation between work and family do not play a major role in career outcomes of academic women neither in Poland nor in Germany but they still affect career strategies in Germany. Polish academia provides also much more room for reconciliation of work and family than German one and this seems to be even more crucial than availability or quality of childcare. Generally academic careers in Germany put more pressures on both men and women than in Poland. Moreover these pressures seem to have less to do with the workload but rather organization of academic careers." (author's abstract)
