Inhalt: Rezension zu: Hodenberg, Christina, von: Das andere Achtundsechzig : Gesellschaftsgeschichte einer Revolte. München: C.H. Beck 2018. 978-3-406-71971-4.

The Reluctant Feminist: Angela Merkel and the Modernization of Gender Politics in Germany
Titelübersetzung:Feministin wider Willen? Angela Merkel und Geschlechtergleichheit in Deutschland
Autor/in:
Mushaben, Joyce Marie
Quelle: Femina Politica - Zeitschrift für feministische Politikwissenschaft, 27 (2018) 2, S 83-95
Inhalt: Academic studies regarding the impact of various forms of gender representation focus largely on quantitative evidence that women in power can make a difference, downplaying qualitative case studies that can establish causal links between women's participation in government and better policies for women. Analyzing policy changes initiated by Germany’s first female Chancellor since 2005, the paper argues that despite her CDU-affiliation, Angela Merkel has contributed more to gender equality in Germany than all previous chancellors, even though she refuses to label herself a feminist. The author explores three factors shaping Merkel's reluctance to embrace the (western dominated) feminist label, e.g., her socialization under a diametrically opposed GDR gender regime, her preference for data-driven policy learning, her aversion towards “ideological” framing, coupled with a tendency to pursue mixed motives, respectively. The paper concludes with recent examples geared towards leveling the global gender playing-field, attesting to her willingness to embrace transformational representation.

Titelübersetzung:Is a "good birth" the result of the "right" choices? A critique of the current discourse on self-determination in light of the economization of obstetric services
Autor/in:

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Self-determination, informed choice and informed consent have become important keywords in obstetric and midwifery practice. The popularity of the current discourse on self-determination coincides with the fact that obstetrics is increasingly being subjected to neoliberal economization and is thereby undergoing profound change. This change manifests itself, above all, in the fact that the structural framework of care for pregnant and birthing women is clearly deteriorating, and in that the somatic relationship-oriented aspects of obstetrics and midwifery are being devalued. I analyze the shift in our understanding of what self-determination is and I also map out the current effects of this shift on pregnant women and women in labour. Furthermore, I illustrate that, and in what way, the current discourse on self-determination in obstetric and midwifery practice leads to the fact that the responsibility for a “good” birth is being transferred onto women. This signifies a loss of the particular temporality and the somatic phenomena the woman in labour experiences. In my conclusion I argue that self-determination should no longer be understood as a question of information, preparation and decision, but rather as enabling judgement, which includes aspects of dependence, awareness, care, pain, fear, but also power, desire and joy." Weiblich, feministisch, Intellektuelle: Paradoxie oder Tabu?
Titelübersetzung:Female, feminist, intellectual: paradox or taboo?
Autor/in:
Dackweiler, Regina-Maria
Inhalt: This article examines why female and feminist intellectuals are still not included in the historiography and sociology of intellectuals. The assumption is that there is an area of tensions related to this social role based on the dimensions of recognition, definition, authorization and belonging. In view of the origins of the second women's movement and taking recourse to explanatory approaches to feminist theorists and to Bourdieu's and Gramsci's social theories of intellectuals, it is possible to elaborate the paradox of the female and the taboo of the feminist intellectual. Based on a draft of the early political ideas of the second women's movement, the article calls for a new genealogy of intellectuals in Germany.

Inhalt: This article focuses on 20th-century terrorist phenomena as gendered objects of knowledge produced and disseminated through history books, mass media and state institutions. By taking 1970s West German terrorism as my field of inquiry, this article will critically discuss how a bourgeois understanding of violence as fundamentally masculine has shaped the way terrorism has been represented, conceptualized and historicized thus far. I will go on to problematize the mas-culine gaze of mass media and state institutions and their tendency to objectify the terrorist. Last but not least, I will delineate how mass media and historiog-raphy of terrorism have relied on a narrative structure that pits rebellious sons and masculine daughters against figural and literal fathers, a frame that is overtly masculine and familial. In so doing I will point to blind spots in the study of 1970s terrorism, namely masculinity and the gender of state institutions. My goal is thus to show how not just individual and symbolic, but also institutional facets of the bourgeois gender order influence the way terrorism has been conceptualized and historicized thus far.

Ecofeminist Ideology of Petra Kelly: The Challenges of Modern Political Thought
Autor/in:
Nadić, Darko
Quelle: European Quarterly of Political Attitudes and Mentalities, 2 (2013) 2, S 63-70
Inhalt: Petra Kelly (1947-1992) has remained recorded in history as one of the true icons of modern German and European environmental movement. Combining the ideas of feminism, peace, nonviolence, ecology (environmental protection) and social justice, she has managed to reconcile these seemingly opposing ideas and merge them into one specific type of ideology that was the guiding idea of the German Green Party until the mid-nineties of the last century. This is not the case of an eclectic kind of ideology, the simple merging of ideas into a single functional unit policy, but of an ideology that is based on the notion that the nuclear age, political, social, gender, class and other differences are something that inhibits humanity in its real progress. At the same time, Petra Kelly has shown that true feminism is not necessarily something that is obscure or something that is politically incorrect. Modern feminism, as it was propagated by Petra Kelly, in compliance with environmental political idea, the idea of peace, nonviolence, anti-nuclear policy and the idea of direct democracy, represents an ideology that, by its political radicalism and its strong criticism of the capitalist society, stands side by side with ecologism. "Cassandra of the nuclear apocalypse", "The Ulrike Meinhof of the eighties", in spite of all her accomplishments for the formation of the German Greens, unfortunately, remained forgotten in the political thought and political practice of the party

Der Postfeminismus-Vorwurf: Beobachtungen zum feministischen Selbstkonzept junger Theaterkünstlerinnen und Journalistinnen am Beispiel des Missy Magazine
Titelübersetzung:The reproach of postfeminism: observations on feminist self-conceptions among young theatre artists and journalists in Missy Magazine
Autor/in:
Gerdes, Gesche
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Since cultural scientist Angela McRobbie began publishing her studies, at the latest, female artists working in pop culture have been suspected of commercializing and trivializing feminist issues. The reproach of post-feminism can often be heard in Germany too in the debate about 'old vs. new feminism' in relation to the art of young and successful women. Missy Magazine portrays various pop cultural female artists, whereby there is always some reference to feminism. This article is dedicated to the female theatre-makers portrayed in Missy Magazine and their feminist self-conceptions. The category 'post-feminism' is thereby subjected to a critical examination and is compared to contemporary female theatre-makers' self-image. Drawing on the theory of post-dramatic theatre, the similarities that exist in a young theatre generation are underlined." (author's abstract)
