Inhalt: This article focuses on 20th-century terrorist phenomena as gendered objects of knowledge produced and disseminated through history books, mass media and state institutions. By taking 1970s West German terrorism as my field of inquiry, this article will critically discuss how a bourgeois understanding of violence as fundamentally masculine has shaped the way terrorism has been represented, conceptualized and historicized thus far. I will go on to problematize the mas-culine gaze of mass media and state institutions and their tendency to objectify the terrorist. Last but not least, I will delineate how mass media and historiog-raphy of terrorism have relied on a narrative structure that pits rebellious sons and masculine daughters against figural and literal fathers, a frame that is overtly masculine and familial. In so doing I will point to blind spots in the study of 1970s terrorism, namely masculinity and the gender of state institutions. My goal is thus to show how not just individual and symbolic, but also institutional facets of the bourgeois gender order influence the way terrorism has been conceptualized and historicized thus far.

Mediating the female terrorist: Patricia Hearst and the containment of the feminist terrorist threat in the United States in the 1970s

Inhalt: In January 1976, the trial of Patricia Campbell Hearst caused a Western media sensation. Representing the culmination of her spectacular kidnapping and conversion to the terrorist cause of the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA), Hearst was on trial for her participation in the Hibernia National Bank robbery almost two years earlier. As of the commencement of the trial, the story of the heiress-come-female-terrorist had been captivating Western media audiences for two years. This article analyses the ways that mainstream media coverage of this event operated to contain both the threat of this particular female terrorist, and the threat of second-wave feminism more broadly. Within Western culture, there has historically been a concern with the need to regulate the mainstream media’s coverage of terrorist events. In this line of thinking, the mainstream media are a precondition for, and a potential site of the contagion of, terrorism. However, as I demonstrate, ultimately, mainstream media coverage of terrorist events in which women are key protagonists operates to recuperate the threat of terrorism. In doing so, it reproduces and reasserts dominant patriarchal gender relations and thus works in the interests of dominant culture, rather than against them.

From women's quota to "women's politics": the impact of gender quotas on political representations and practices in the Pakistani National Parliament
Autor/in:
Dutoya, Virginie
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "In 2002, the Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf announced that 17% of the seats in the National Assembly and Senate would be reserved to women. Though quotas for women were not a new phenomenon in Pakistan, they had never reached this level. Moreover, after they had been dropped in 1988, the representation of women in the Pakistani parliament fell under 3%. Thus the entry of more than 80 women in Parliament (about 20% of all MPs) in 2002 was considered as a game changer in Pakistani politics, and Musharraf's decision was generally praised by activists of the women's movement. The article tries to evaluate how women construct new ways to do politics in their discourses and practices, and what place gender norms and representations occupy in this process. While recognizing women's agency though quota regulations, it is also argued that a distinctive demarcation of 'women's politics' can bring about constraints, contribute to women's marginalization in the political field, and strengthen gender stereotypes." Autor/in:
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article discusses perspectives of violence research in the field of violence against elderly people. In the beginning of the 1980s, when violence against the elderly became a theme for science and research in Germany, debates were dominated by the expierence and casusitics of social workers. As a result a gender bias developed in research and a picture of violence as a female conflict was institutionalized." (author's abstract)

Migration, Geschlecht, Gewalt: Überlegungen zu einem intersektionellen Gewaltbegriff
Titelübersetzung:Migration, gender, violence: towards an intersectional concept of violence
Autor/in:
Sauer, Birgit
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Political measures against as well as scientific debates about so-called 'traditional harmful practices' against women in western immigration countries put the necessity of an intersectional concept of violence on the feminist scientific agenda, Such a concept should aim to escape the trap of culturalizing the 'Other'. It should also build the ground to guarantee sustainable harm reduction without stigmatizing minority groups nor victimizing women affected by violence. In the context of a broad feminist notion of violence the article suggests the re-theorization of the concept of violence against women. This conceptualization should include first the interplay of structures and discourses of violence, second the interaction of structures of inequality between minority groups and dominant society, and third the intersection of structures of inequality and violence between gender, culture, ethnicity, religion, and class." The twenty-five maiden ladies' tomb and predicaments of the feminist movement in Taiwan
Autor/in:
Lee, Anru; Tang, Wen-hui Anna
Quelle: Journal of Current Chinese Affairs, 39 (2010) 3, S 23-49
Inhalt: "The Twenty-five Maiden Ladies' Tomb" is the collective burial site of the female workers who died in a ferry accident on their way to work in 1973. The fact that of the more than 70 passengers on board all 25 who died were unmarried young women, and the taboo in Taiwanese culture that shuns unmarried female ghosts, made the Tomb a fearsome place. Feminists in Gaoxiong had for some years wanted the city government to change the tomb's public image. Their calls were not answered until the Gaoxiong mayor's office finally allocated money to clean up the gravesite and, as part of the city's plans to develop urban tourism, to remake it into the tourist-friendly "Memorial Park for Women Labourers". Consequently, even though the tomb renovation seemed to indicate a triumph of the feminist endeavour, it was more a result of the Gaoxiong city government's efforts towards culture-led urban revitalization.
Problematisierte Patrilinearität bei den ParsInnen in Mumbai
Titelübersetzung:Challenged patrilineality of Parsis in Mumbai
Autor/in:
Walthert, Rafael
Inhalt: "The autonomy of religious communities in India concerning the realm of personal law allows the direct influence of religion on the configuration of gender relations. This is also the case for the community of Parsi Zoroastrians, an economic elite within Mumbai, whose patrilineal concept of community is legitimated with reference to religious tradition. Liberal Parsis criticize patrilineality and call for gender equity. This article offers a reconstruction of the discursive process and the main arguments therein, which allows a characterization of the communal configurations between gender and religion, and their relation to tradition and change." Kritische Anmerkungen zur These der Gendersymmetrie bei Gewalt in Paarbeziehungen
Titelübersetzung:Critical comments on the thesis of gender symmetry in domestic violence
Autor/in:
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The article focuses critically on the thesis of 'gender symmetry' in domestic violence, and discusses its empirical and scientific, as well as political, relevance. Empirical data shows that victimization of men and women through violence in heterosexual couple relationships differs relevantly when patterns and levels of violence, as well as contextual meanings, are taken into account. Despite this, the author argues, that it is necessary to depolarize unbalanced victim-perpetrator discourses that tend to fix women and men in traditional positions." (author's abstract)

Geschlechterbilder und geschlechterpolitische Konflikte im postsozialistischen Polen
Titelübersetzung:Gender images and political conflicts over gender in post-socialist Poland
Autor/in:
Fuchs, Gesine
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Since 1989, Poland has experienced strong political conflicts over gender. However, promoted gender order, prevalent norms, and social reality often diverge. How can this fact be understood and explained? Taking Birgit Pfau-Effinger's concept of gender arrangement as a starting point, the article shows inconsistencies between gender culture and gender order in Poland and analyses argumentative patterns in four parliamentary debates on a gender equality law between 1999 and 2005. Ultimately, it is shown that national-conservative discourses on gender models and mothers' roles are over-represented compared to the population. Liberal voices are almost absent and leftist proponents barely develop positive visions on gender equality. The article hypothesizes that past state socialism continues to influence the debate, as actors still rhetorically and politically distance themselves from the old regime. Furthermore, reasons for the gap between the hegemonic national- conservative discourses, actual ways of living and gender policies are discussed." (author's abstract)
