Inhalt: Equal opportunity policies have achieved a number of milestones in Europe, including the legalization of same-sex marriage, women's right to determine their own lives, the possibility to include gender and sexuality in academic paradigms or the visibility of women in patriarchal language. However, currently these accomplishments are under attack. Taking Austria as an example the article shows that the rejection of equal opportunities, the wish for the re-establishment of traditional, hierarchical and naturalized gender relations and the will to repudiate and discriminate against any form of sexuality other than heterosexuality are part of broader right-wing populist and right-wing extremist strategies, which aim to naturalize social inequality. We show that gender and sexuality related discourses have the potential to render these overarching strategies more plausible and popular. The fight against gender equality and against the acceptance of sexual diversity is analyzed as part of a fight for cultural hegemony. It is a fight that tries to dismantle social achievements, the liberalization of social relations and the democratic compromises of the 1970s, but which most of all objects to the idea of 'equality' as the basis of democracy.

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The greater the successes of gender equality policies, gender research and in diversity management, the more vehemently they are devalued rhetorically by their opponents. Hence, the current journalistic tendency towards anti-genderism can be labelled, but this discourse and its targets cannot be understood in the hermeneutic sense. In particular, the authors of daily columns and commentaries have armed themselves rhetorically in recent years. Incitement against gender studies and gender policies has become a popular phenomenon in German-speaking online and print media. The debate has turned into a generational question of different medial dispositives that seem to pit analogue conservatism in book form against the activism of digital natives. This article attempts to take stock from the literary perspective and analyzes the discourse from the point of view of semiotic and collective symbolism." (author's abstract)

Inhalt: This article focuses on 20th-century terrorist phenomena as gendered objects of knowledge produced and disseminated through history books, mass media and state institutions. By taking 1970s West German terrorism as my field of inquiry, this article will critically discuss how a bourgeois understanding of violence as fundamentally masculine has shaped the way terrorism has been represented, conceptualized and historicized thus far. I will go on to problematize the mas-culine gaze of mass media and state institutions and their tendency to objectify the terrorist. Last but not least, I will delineate how mass media and historiog-raphy of terrorism have relied on a narrative structure that pits rebellious sons and masculine daughters against figural and literal fathers, a frame that is overtly masculine and familial. In so doing I will point to blind spots in the study of 1970s terrorism, namely masculinity and the gender of state institutions. My goal is thus to show how not just individual and symbolic, but also institutional facets of the bourgeois gender order influence the way terrorism has been conceptualized and historicized thus far.

Inhalt: After some introductory remarks, this article gives a brief overview on contem-porary terrorism research in the political and social sciences. Then, the important contributions historical studies have made to enhance the academic knowledge about terrorism are sketched. The third part provides an overview which not only critically discusses the state of research on gendered aspects of terrorism but also demonstrates the stimulating insights gained by employing a historical perspective in this field. In the fourth chapter, the authors outline some promising topics of future terrorism research which all can be studied from gender sensitive historical perspectives. Finally the results of the contributions put together for this HSR Special Issue are summarized.

Mediating the female terrorist: Patricia Hearst and the containment of the feminist terrorist threat in the United States in the 1970s

Inhalt: In January 1976, the trial of Patricia Campbell Hearst caused a Western media sensation. Representing the culmination of her spectacular kidnapping and conversion to the terrorist cause of the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA), Hearst was on trial for her participation in the Hibernia National Bank robbery almost two years earlier. As of the commencement of the trial, the story of the heiress-come-female-terrorist had been captivating Western media audiences for two years. This article analyses the ways that mainstream media coverage of this event operated to contain both the threat of this particular female terrorist, and the threat of second-wave feminism more broadly. Within Western culture, there has historically been a concern with the need to regulate the mainstream media’s coverage of terrorist events. In this line of thinking, the mainstream media are a precondition for, and a potential site of the contagion of, terrorism. However, as I demonstrate, ultimately, mainstream media coverage of terrorist events in which women are key protagonists operates to recuperate the threat of terrorism. In doing so, it reproduces and reasserts dominant patriarchal gender relations and thus works in the interests of dominant culture, rather than against them.

Inhalt: "In this essay the author will look at a group of four male students watching the dating and game show 'Take Me Out' and in this context analyze the construction of masculinities through conversational practice. The theoretical background of this study is provided by the analysis of media consumption as interaction on a 'mediated conversational floor' put forward by Helen Wood, and the positioning approach to gendered identities as developed by Neill Korobov and Micheal Bamberg. Synthesizing both perspectives he will approach the collected data to ask how the participants use the conversational frame of communal TV watching for positioning themselves; and in what way the recourse to masculinity, in relation to other features, becomes a significant object of these positionings. After starting with a further elaboration of this research question in the light of the mentioned theories, he will introduce the context and realization of the study. He will then go on to analyze selected sequences from the obtained data. Concludingly the author will summarize the results and briefly discuss their implications." (author's abstract)
Is the discourse of hybridity a celebration of mixing, or a reformulation of racial division? A multimodal analysis of the Portuguese magazine Afro

Inhalt: For many years the study of "race" relations was dominated by paradigms—of assimilationism and multiculturalism—which highlighted difference and division (as a problem, or a virtue). In more recent years the idea of racial and cultural mixing—creolization or hybridization—has become an important concept in ethnic and racial studies. The starting point of this article is the observation that the idea of racial and cultural mixture—hybridity or mestiçagem—was a key ideological feature of Portuguese colonialism in its last decades. If hybridity is not therefore a new discourse in Portugal, what is the place for it today and what kind of hybridity is being referred to? What might the Portuguese case tell us about discourses of hybridity more generally? The article explores these questions through a combined visual and linguistic analysis of the lifestyle magazine Afro as a site where contemporary discourses about "race" intertwine.
Review Essay: In der Falle der Synthetisierung von Diskursanalyse und soziologischer Feldtheorie
Titelübersetzung:Review Essay: In the Trap of Synthesizing Discourse Analysis and Sociological Field Theory
Autor/in:
Jäger, Siegfried
Quelle: Forum Qualitative Sozialforschung / Forum: Qualitative Social Research, 8 (2007) 2
Inhalt: In this book Oliver GEDEN analyses the ways two right-wing populist parties, the Austrian FPÖ and the Swiss SVP, interpret the topics of immigration and gender / family. He does so in the frame of a discourse analysis based on methods derived from the sociology of knowledge; and he combines the Foucauldian theory of discourse with the capital and field theory of Pierre BOURDIEU. He is first and foremost interested in (the great variety of) the reactions of both parties to their transition from opposition to government. By putting the various political topics into their respective contexts he succeeds in explaining these different reactions sociologically. To sum up: on the one hand the SVP remains stable and does not divert from its right-wing populist course, on the other the FPÖ becomes a kind of "pet swine" ["Verhausschweinung"], declines and loses voters and eventually splits up. Furthermore he tracks down the connections in the semiotic offerings of right-wing parties to "common-sense" knowledge in society. The analytical procedure and its theoretical links represent a common, present-day variety of discourse analysis. First, it does not approach the theoretical relationship between discourse and reality in the way FOUCAULT did, but refers to BOURDIEU. Second, explicitly—and to my mind not always beneficially—it postulates that discourse analysis has for a long time been dominated by linguistic concepts. However, one cannot forfeit the use of linguistic tools and neither does GEDEN ("semantic contents", "topics", "narratives", "style", "rhetorics"). It would be preferable to bring together the important discourse-analytical findings of various disciplines rather than—rashly—to have them compete against each other. Finally, this attempt at empirical analysis could well contribute to further elaboration on the concept of discourse analysis for the cultural sciences.
