Inhalt: In the 2010s in Turkey, the ruling Justice and Development Party's (AKP) authoritarian-populist turn accompanied the institutionalization of political Islam. As laicism was discredited and labeled as an imposed-from-above principle of Western/Kemalist modernity, the notion of equality ceased to inform the state’s gender policies. In response to AKP's attempts to redefine gender relations through the notions of complementarity and fıtrat (purpose of creation), women across the political spectrum have mobilized for an understanding of gender equality that transcends the laicism - Islamism divide yet maintains secularity as its constitutive principle. Analyzing three recent attempts of women's coalition-building, this article shows that, first, gender equality activists in the 2010s are renegotiating the border between secularity and piety towards more inclusive understandings of gender equality; and second, that struggles against AKP’s gender politics are fragmented due to different configurations of gender equality and secularity that reflect class and ethnic antagonisms in Turkish society. The article thereby argues for the need to move beyond binary approaches to secularism and religion that have so far dominated the scholarly analysis of women’s activism in both Turkey and the Nordic context.

Inhalt: In this contribution we discuss the question of whether the so-called "feminization" of medicine challenges persisting power structures in the field. The notion of the "feminization of medicine" implies both the "masculinity" of the field and its change due to the increasing number of female medical doctors. We present the comparative analysis of two group discussions from the longitudinal study "Career Paths and Career Breaks of Medical Doctors During Residency" (KarMed). One discussion was held with women, one discussion with men, all of whom had just completed their medical studies. In both discussions the theme of gender came up manifestly in the discursive context of the so-called "feminization of medicine". The discussants contrasted this "feminization" with the mythologically laden "masculinity" of surgery. The material of our group discussions indicates a persistent masculine norm in the perception of both female and male doctors. Despite all differences between their members, the group of men constituted itself as a group of medical doctors representing the masculine norm. The group of women constituted itself through shared identifications as "women in medicine". We analyzed the material with psychoanalytic methods in social research and we discuss our interpretations in relation to the notions of "feminization" and of "hegemonic masculinity".

Inhalt: The article seeks to examine the relevance of post-socialist and post-Yugoslavian feminist state criticism against the background of an ongoing transformation of gender relations and statehood. How can the re-traditionalization of gender relations, made after the breakdown of the socialist state system, be pin-pointed, and how should it be currently valued? Following the dispute concerning the post-Yugoslavian nation state as formulated by Rada Ivekovic, an advanced theoretical approach is developed. This approach is dependent upon current feminist state theories. In so doing, the concept of masculine-oriented statehood remains the crucial focal point. The victory of Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic during the Croatian presidential elections in January of 2015 (as well as the succeeding victory speech) serves as a sample of analysis of the current political discourse in Croatia, by retracing the manner in which a highly ranking female politician utilizes state-building discourse to re-formulate masculinist concepts of state and family.

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The article argues that a critique of heternormativity as the contrasting juxtaposition of normalization and subversion processes does not grasp the simultaneity and ambivalences of these processes, and thus proofs to be an inadequate tool to theorize queerfeminist politics. The author draws on examples of the politics of queer families and the entanglement of normalizing and subverting impacts therein to reconsider the concept of heteronormativity through an affect theory lens. This reconsideration of heteronormativity is the starting point for a threefold reformulation of queerfeminist politics: as affectively structured by paradoxes, as a non-linear temporality devoid of a narrative of progress, and as a locus for apparently apolitical socialities." Mediating the female terrorist: Patricia Hearst and the containment of the feminist terrorist threat in the United States in the 1970s

Inhalt: In January 1976, the trial of Patricia Campbell Hearst caused a Western media sensation. Representing the culmination of her spectacular kidnapping and conversion to the terrorist cause of the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA), Hearst was on trial for her participation in the Hibernia National Bank robbery almost two years earlier. As of the commencement of the trial, the story of the heiress-come-female-terrorist had been captivating Western media audiences for two years. This article analyses the ways that mainstream media coverage of this event operated to contain both the threat of this particular female terrorist, and the threat of second-wave feminism more broadly. Within Western culture, there has historically been a concern with the need to regulate the mainstream media’s coverage of terrorist events. In this line of thinking, the mainstream media are a precondition for, and a potential site of the contagion of, terrorism. However, as I demonstrate, ultimately, mainstream media coverage of terrorist events in which women are key protagonists operates to recuperate the threat of terrorism. In doing so, it reproduces and reasserts dominant patriarchal gender relations and thus works in the interests of dominant culture, rather than against them.

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article explores the role of the media in the popular discourses concerned with gender relations. Referring to recent studies and current debates the authors find fundamental ambivalences with regard to gender representation in the journalistic workforce and fictional and nonfictional media production. Old gender hierarchies and new antifeminist tendencies exist alongside greater equality in the workforce and modernized media images. The new visibility, for example of women with an immigrant background or queer identities, is linked to normalization strategies that conform to the norms of a hetero- normative gender dualism. While topics raised by feminists in the 1970s are back on the media agenda, they are rearticulated and tied to notions of both a 'conservative' and a 'young' feminism, thereby rearticulating the concerns of the feminist movement and framing them in an antisocial, individualistic context. By referring to the work of McRobbie, Fraser and Knapp the article connects these findings to digitalization, neoliberalism and globalization." (author's abstract)

Januar 2013." (Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Problems of food insecurity and food crises are inextricably linked to other mutually reinforcing crises. The financial crisis, climate change and armed confl icts influence and exacerbate the living conditions of the rural population in particular. The conference organized by the Chair of Gender and Globalization at the Humboldt University of Berlin on 25/26 January 2013 looked into how the gender perspective can be used to investigate the relationship between agricultural production, unpaid reproductive work and the environment in the context of these crises."
