Inhalt: The present study investigates the change of gender role attitudes in Germany between 1982 and 2016. Nine waves of the German General Social Survey are used (N = 26,389). In contrast to previous trend studies, which largely ignore age effects, a mechanism-based age-period-cohort model (Winship/Harding 2008) is applied. It becomes clear that age, period and cohort independently have an impact on gender role ideology. Compared to earlier research, new insights concerning the shape of cohort effects come to light: Specific to traditional gender ideology in Western Germany, it is apparent that the trend towards increasingly egalitarian attitudes comes to a halt in men born around 1956 and later and in women born 1966. For Eastern Germany we observe that the cohort-specific trend towards liberalisation in younger cohorts either is diminishing or even tends to reverse. This pattern of effects mainly mirrors the phases of the feminist movement in Western Germany and the rise and decline of the German Democratic Republic, respectively.

Inhalt: This paper explores earnings inequalities within dual-earner couples in East and West Germany drawing on household-level panel data from 1992 to 2016. It has three aims: (1) to analyze how the partner pay gap (the pay gap between partners within one household) has developed over time, given institutional change, and whether the extent of inequality and temporal development vary between East and West Germany; (2) to explore variation in the partner pay gap by male partners' absolute earnings; and (3) to investigate the micro-level determinants of earnings inequalities within couples and determine whether their relevance varies between East and West Germany as well as by male partners’ absolute earnings. We find women earn substantially less than their partners, and our regression results find no indication of a declining partner pay gap. Besides substantial variation between East and West Germany, our results also reveal important group-specific variation in the extent of the partner pay gap as well as in its determinants.

Inhalt: Educational expansion, the massive increase of women’s labor force participation, and assortative mating have reduced asymmetries in educational achievements and in career resources between women and men in virtually every Western society. This paper provides an analysis of the association between partners' education, parenthood, and spouses' relative labor supply in East and West Germany. Education is considered from two angles: as an indicator for resources on the labor market or as an indicator for gender attitudes. We apply cross-sectional data from the 2011 German Microcensus, comprising 57,366 couple households. For our estimations, we use General Linear Models. Because of high case numbers, we are able to estimate several interaction effects in statistical powerful detail. We find that (1) a woman's share of paid work is higher, the higher she is educated; (2) women with higher education than their male partners realize higher shares of relative employment (in comparison to other women); (3) women rarely realize a share of 50% or higher on average in any educational composition; (4) especially young children have a huge impact on women's labor supply; and (5) women's comparative educational advantages are more important for their share of paid work in West than in East Germany. Neither interpretation of relative education can explain the overall picture of couples’ division of paid work alone. Depending on parenthood, the age of the youngest child in the household, and the regional context, either normative, or economic exchanges between partners seem to drive the association between relative education, and relative labor supply of women. We demonstrate the usefulness of two theoretical approaches of framing education as an explanatory concept.

Inhalt: This study examines how within-couple inequalities, that is power differences between men and women in a partnership, act as predictors of transitions from full-time to part-time employment applying Heckman corrected probit models in three different institutional and cultural contexts; Eastern Germany, Western Germany and the United Kingdom. The analyses show that when women are in a weaker position within their relationships they are more likely to drop-out of full-time work, but that this propensity varies by context. The authors also find an increased tendency over time for women to leave full-time for part-time employment in both Eastern and Western Germany, but observe no such trend in the UK. This is suggestive of ongoing incompatibilities in the institutional support for equality in dual-earning in Germany. The study uses longitudinal data covering the period 1992 until 2012 from the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) for Germany and from the British Household Panel (BHPS) and the ‘Understanding Society’ data for the UK.

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Childlessness is a widespread phenomenon in Germany. Previous studies show considerable variation in different population groups; the interaction of different factors is, however, largely unexplored. This article aims to fill this research gap by both dendrogram analyses and by estimating logistic regression analyses for women in the cohorts 1950-1969 based on Microcensus data from 2012. Multivariate results reveal that an urban place of residence, high education, no migration background, no marriage, and full-time employment largely increase the probability of childlessness. These factors cumulatively interact with each other, while the effects of pecuniary variables rather decrease. Three group-specific differentiations are remarkable: The low childlessness rate of women with low education is predominantly based on the effect of migrants. The effect of urbanisation does not apply to women with a migration background. The trend of increasing childlessness among highly educated women has stopped - at a high level: The childlessness rate of highly educated women without migration background in western German cities amounts to 38%, with a full time occupation it even rises to 51%. For western Germany, this paper shows an increasing polarisation between motherhood and career: For many women, motherhood is accompanied by a permanently reduced participation in the labour market. Conversely, the growing new opportunities regarding occupation, relationships and leisure often end in permanent childlessness." (author's abstract)

Inhalt: "The following article makes a contribution to the study of opportunities and difficulties of female East German political mandate holders, and justifies the use of an analytical biography approach. The article is empirically based on the results of my dissertation project East German women in politics. A qualitative analysis. In this present paper I discuss the reasons why exactly the biography-analytical approach is suitable to explore topics of the intertwining of 'outer' life course and 'inner' sedimentation of biographical experiences. The key results of my study are outlined. It is shown that especially the rapid political and socio-cultural change within the former GDR in 1989/1990 offered unique participation opportunities for politically ambitious East German women to pursue a career as parliamentarians after a radically new political scene had been set up. The article also focuses on the paradoxes that the contemporary female mandate holders tend to be confronted with; these paradoxes are exacerbated by the ascribed genderized roles of female politicians. On the empirical base of my (finished) research project, this paper attempts to generate analytical categories and to discuss with their help the work and life situation of women socialized in East Germany within political arenas. The analysis will be pursued in a biography-theoretical perspective, and some ofthe particular features of the field of research of East German women in politics will be formulated." von Kontinuität und Diskontinuität geprägt, je nach Geburtskohorte, Geschlecht, (partei-)politischer Nähe zum DDR-System. [Autorenreferat]
Inhalt: "The life courses and employment histories of East Germans have changed since the fall of the Wall
in 1989. Summarizing the research findings in four theses, the authors show that the degree of stability and discontinuity in the life courses of East Germans varies between birth cohorts, gender, and the overt political loyalty to the GDR. Among other things, we see that loyalty to the GDR did not increase the risks of unemployment or downward mobility after 1989, because the majority of the former members of the upper service class hold university degrees." (Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article analyses differences between East and West Germany in attitudes towards the employment of mothers, using data from the 2008 ALLBUS. I test hypotheses about the effect of the region, gender and religion on attitudes towards the maternal role. The results show that the modern attitudes of East Germans towards gender roles survived the end of the socialism and that there are still differences between East and West Germany concerning this issue. Furthermore, women approve the employment of mothers more strongly than men do. There is a negative effect of religion, i.e. that religious people support traditional gender roles. After more than one decade of reunification there is still no consensus German position regarding the discussion of maternal role attitudes. Instead, the discussion continues." (author's abstract)
