(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The article provides an example of psycho-societal analysis of work related learning. Initially a conceptual framework of learning and life experience is established drawing on Alfred Lorenzer and Oskar Negt, and the interactional development of psychoanalysis. A case of learning experience from research into a retraining program for unskilled workers, exposing a very conflictual subjective experience of a traineeship, is presented and commented. The worker's experience is interpreted focusing on the gender aspects of the conflicts, seeing the learning process in the context of a work identity process, which is related to a career shift enforced by labor market transition requiring male workers to retrain for a social work profession which used to be female, and more widely to a reconfiguration of the societal relation between work and gender. The final section discusses the methodological framework for analyzing learning processes by means of interpreting language use. The notion of language game connects the level of unconscious social engagements and level of formal learning and knowledge, and the opportunity for a deeper understanding of professional learning and identity is indicated by reference to one more example." Inhalt: "Industrial societies were predominantly male societies which blocked women from access to privileged positions. Present-day post-industrial service economies increasingly become female societies in which gender-specific inequalities lose salience, having undergone more profound changes since the 1960s than in the hundred previous years. Contemporary policy discourses do not yet adequately reflect this silent revolution and should focus more on two central challenges to social integration, i.e. class-related inequalities and the integration of immigrant children into our systems of higher learning." Education gender gaps in Pakistan: is the labour market to blame
Autor/in:
Aslam, Monazza
Quelle: Economic Development and Cultural Change, 57 (2009) 4, S 747-84
Inhalt: Differential labor market returns to male and female education are one potential explanation for large gender gaps in education in Pakistan. We empirically test this explanation by estimating private returns to education separately for male and female wage earners. This article contributes to the literature by using a variety of methodologies (ordinary least squares, Heckman correction, two‐stage least squares, and household fixed effects) in order to estimate economic returns to education. The latest nationally representative data - the Pakistan Integrated Household Survey (2002) - are used. Earnings function estimates consistently reveal a sizable gender asymmetry in economic returns to education, with returns to women's education being substantially and statistically significantly higher than men's. The return to an additional year of schooling ranges between 7% and 11% for men and between 13% and 18% for women. There are also large, direct returns to women's education at low levels of schooling, and the education‐earnings profile is more convex for women than for men. However, a decomposition of the gender wage gap (into the component "explained" by differing male and female endowments and the residual component) suggests that there is highly differentiated treatment by employers. We conclude that the total labor market returns are much higher for men, despite returns to education being higher for women. This suggests that parents may have an investment motive in allocating more resources to boys than to girls within households.
Gender differentiation in higher education: educational specialization and labour market risks in Spain and Germany

Inhalt: The objective of this paper is to investigate the relationship between gender differentiation in tertiary education and labour market hazards. We analyze how differences between male and female tertiary graduates in the chosen degree level and field of study affect the likelihood to be unemployed or obtain a low status job. In order to learn about the role of institutional context, we compare Germany and Spain, two countries that differ with respect to horizontal (field of study) and vertical (degree level) segregation by gender as well as to the linkage between the education and labour market system. Using Labour Force Survey data from the year 2000, our results of logistic regression models as well as a non-linear decomposition technique generally confirm our expectation that the field of study explains a sizable portion of the gender gap in unemployment and low status jobs in both countries. Whereas the level of tertiary degree does not matter with respect to unemployment in either country, it explains part of the female disadvantage in holding a low status job in Spain. Moreover, our analyses show that women with a degree in a predominantly male field of study are not systematically disadvantaged compared to men. Finally, even though the role of the institutional context is hard to evaluate, it seems that, for the two selected countries, the horizontal and vertical gender segregation is more relevant in Spain than in Germany.'

Inhalt: "This paper investigates processes of organisational reform and restructuring in the banking sector and their gender specific implications. The analysis, based on a literature review and own research results, suggests that women should not just be considered as loosers of the current organisational changes. Rather, in the course of organisational reforms women seem to gain better career opportunities in some management functions at the lower and middle level. The gradual feminisation of these specific Management areas, however, goes hand in hand with the persistence of a gender specific segregation in other areas. There are also indications for a de-coupling of career paths in branch Management and newly established career paths into higher Management. The introduction of new organisational and Management models, thus, does not automatically lead to an erosion of gender hierarchies. Just as little do gender segregation and discrimination follow homogeneous and unchangeable patterns. The author suggests that future research should start from a differentiated perspective which gives more attention to how different groups of women (and men) are affected by and do articulate their interests throughout processes of organisational reform and restructuring."

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This paper, examines the impact of the societal conditions on the career-participation of women by using the examples of the process of integration of women in managerial positions in the private sector during the 1980s in Sweden and Germany (former Westgermany). During this space of time the share of women in these positions in both countries increased, although each country has its own (different) institutionalised policy in the question of labourmarket-integration of women and equal-opportunities. The theoretical framework comprises of a combination of approaches in the field of cross-national comparisons on the gender-system, the research area 'organisation and gender' and the theoretical tradition of the symbolic interactionism. International and national labour market statistics as well as results of a study made in 1992/93 in which a total of 159 women in managerial positions in both countries (78 women in Germany, 81 women in Sweden) were interviewed, supply the empirical basis of the comparison. The results do not show any direct connection between the policy of labourmarket-integration and the access of women to managerial positions. The much higher participation rate of Swedish women in the workforce is due to the share of middle- and low-skilled working women. Decisive for the access of women to managerial positions is however, the integration of the universitylevel-graduates in different labour market segments and the process of vertical gender-segregation for this specific group of women within the segments. The marked impact of the societal conditions is demonstrated in the combination of career and family and in the way the women deal with their everyday working-life. The societal measures for an easier combination of career and family allow the Swedish female managers to combine both life spheres: 82 percent of the women have children, in Germany, where only 30 percent of the participants have children, the female managers depend much more on individual solutions. In keeping with the equal-opportunity-policy in Sweden the participants challenge the companies to improve the career-possibilities for women. The German participants are sceptical towards any official measures. They favour individual strategies more, e.g. convincing their superiors, colleagues and co-workers of their competence."
