Inhalt: The starting point for this article is the supposition that two significant female 20th century intellectuals, Milena Jesenská and Alice Rühle-Gerstel, have so far received only modest recognition for their achievements. The article briefly outlines the remarkable achievements of these two authors and activists and then analyzes the reception of their work. A number of events and processes can be identified which resulted in the misinterpretation and less than satisfactory consideration of their contributions. Theoretical approaches in the fields of political philosophy and political sociology are applied in the course of this analysis. Both the political system and asymmetrical gender power relations contributed in various ways to the false interpretation of the achievements of the two intellectuals. On account of their untimely deaths, both women were unable to build up their academic reputations, for example by means of being visible to and in contact with the public. The article demonstrates the need for further research into the biographies and legacies of Milena Jesenská and Alice Rühle-Gerstel, including from the feminist perspective. It also aspires to stimulate this critical discourse.

Inhalt: This article focuses on 20th-century terrorist phenomena as gendered objects of knowledge produced and disseminated through history books, mass media and state institutions. By taking 1970s West German terrorism as my field of inquiry, this article will critically discuss how a bourgeois understanding of violence as fundamentally masculine has shaped the way terrorism has been represented, conceptualized and historicized thus far. I will go on to problematize the mas-culine gaze of mass media and state institutions and their tendency to objectify the terrorist. Last but not least, I will delineate how mass media and historiog-raphy of terrorism have relied on a narrative structure that pits rebellious sons and masculine daughters against figural and literal fathers, a frame that is overtly masculine and familial. In so doing I will point to blind spots in the study of 1970s terrorism, namely masculinity and the gender of state institutions. My goal is thus to show how not just individual and symbolic, but also institutional facets of the bourgeois gender order influence the way terrorism has been conceptualized and historicized thus far.

Escaping/transgressing the feminine: bodies, prisons and weapons of proximity

Inhalt: Assuming that gender relationships are essential to any analysis of terrorism and political violence, I shall examine how the sex-gender stereotypes work, as well as their transgressions. The female military protagonists in the Abu Ghraib media scandal and the women prisoners of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) during the dirty protest in Armagh (1980) are used as a framework in which issues of visibility/invisibility, independence/ dependence, invulnerability/ vulnerability of women will be addressed. The paper pays particular attention to both the violence against the body and also to the use of the body as a political weapon. From this perspective I analyse both the differences and similarities of menstrual blood as a weapon of proximity in both contexts. The two cases have in common the fact that they occurred in prisons and that women embodied non-traditional roles: soldiers, women political prisoners, allowing for reflection from feminist perspectives on the female inclusion in the citizenship, on participation in political violence and terrorism and on agency and autonomy.

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The article provides an example of psycho-societal analysis of work related learning. Initially a conceptual framework of learning and life experience is established drawing on Alfred Lorenzer and Oskar Negt, and the interactional development of psychoanalysis. A case of learning experience from research into a retraining program for unskilled workers, exposing a very conflictual subjective experience of a traineeship, is presented and commented. The worker's experience is interpreted focusing on the gender aspects of the conflicts, seeing the learning process in the context of a work identity process, which is related to a career shift enforced by labor market transition requiring male workers to retrain for a social work profession which used to be female, and more widely to a reconfiguration of the societal relation between work and gender. The final section discusses the methodological framework for analyzing learning processes by means of interpreting language use. The notion of language game connects the level of unconscious social engagements and level of formal learning and knowledge, and the opportunity for a deeper understanding of professional learning and identity is indicated by reference to one more example." Deciphering political utopias: unions, female night work and gender justice

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The group discussion is a qualitative method perfectly suited for analyzing attitudes and opinions at the supra-individual level and tracing the process of how they emerge. Psychoanalytic group theories expand our understanding of group processes by adding the dimension of the unconscious: groups, too, display defense reactions and forms of repression. By adding this dimension, we can show how social groups proceed to collectively relegate important issues to the realm of the unconscious. In this way, social defense processes are reproduced in actu. In group discussions involving female union members, the predicament of working mothers comes to the fore particularly clearly. An excerpt from a group discussion illustrates that the women seem to perceive night work as the only realistic solution to the problem of reconciling work and family. Only when we turn to a psychoanalytic hermeneutics of scenic understanding are we able to reveal a repressed conception of life looming behind the paradoxical demand: the desire to overcome the separation of productive and reproductive labor in the lives of both sexes; a desire that can only be achieved if labor unions, too, perceive gender relations as a political challenge demanding their attention. Inhalt: The impact of modernization and industrialization on gender arrangements has been different depending on the gender culture that predominated when the modernization process started. Romania was among the most rural societies in Europe after the Second World War. Women's involvement in agricultural activity was very high, but the gender division of work was a very traditional one. The communist regimes promoted a full employment policy for the entire population but did nothing to encourage gender equality in the private space. This article focuses on the Romanian case, aiming to identify the dynamics of gender beliefs during the post-communist period. Using data from two waves of the European Values Survey (1990, 1999), as well as data provided by the Public Opinion Barometer 2007 and by Family Life - 2008, the authors carried out standard cohort decomposition methods in order to detect the mechanism that produced the most variation in gender beliefs. "Leichtere Beschäftigungen": Geschlechterdifferenz als Leitbild der Forstlichen Arbeitswissenschaft
Titelübersetzung:'Lighter work': gender difference as a general principle in Forest Work Science
Autor/in:
Westermayer, Till
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Forestry presents itself as a male domain. As a discipline, Forest Work Science (Forstliche Arbeitswissenschaft) has helped to shape this sphere of work since the 1920s. Content analysis of 'classic' texts from this sub-discipline of Forest Science allow the dominant gender image to be reconstructed as being based on differences in several dimensions. Women and men are described almost as different 'species'. That difference is in particular constructed in relation to physical ability and 'gender-specific' skills. Women are seen as being in need of protection. All these differences normalize the gendered division of work, assigning men the role of breadwinner and women that of being responsible for family work for the man. The article concludes by asking to what extent this differentiation still exists and wherein lie the advantages and disadvantages of switching from difference to diversity as the dominant mode of thinking in (Forestry) Work Science." Inhalt: Following trade agreements between ASEAN states, the expansion of cross-border roads and bridges between Laos and Thailand has linked local communities and distant markets in increasingly diverse ways. Although the planned impacts of such integration are expected to be beneficial, effects on the ground vary, as witnessed at a sleepy outpost in Xayabury and a more vibrant crossing in Savannakhet. This paper discusses first the physical setting of such border facilities, and then explores their actual local effects on traders’ activities, highlighting changes in gender roles and perceptions of entrepreneurial competition participated in by women in the two research sites.

Geschlechterbilder und geschlechterpolitische Konflikte im postsozialistischen Polen
Titelübersetzung:Gender images and political conflicts over gender in post-socialist Poland
Autor/in:
Fuchs, Gesine
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Since 1989, Poland has experienced strong political conflicts over gender. However, promoted gender order, prevalent norms, and social reality often diverge. How can this fact be understood and explained? Taking Birgit Pfau-Effinger's concept of gender arrangement as a starting point, the article shows inconsistencies between gender culture and gender order in Poland and analyses argumentative patterns in four parliamentary debates on a gender equality law between 1999 and 2005. Ultimately, it is shown that national-conservative discourses on gender models and mothers' roles are over-represented compared to the population. Liberal voices are almost absent and leftist proponents barely develop positive visions on gender equality. The article hypothesizes that past state socialism continues to influence the debate, as actors still rhetorically and politically distance themselves from the old regime. Furthermore, reasons for the gap between the hegemonic national- conservative discourses, actual ways of living and gender policies are discussed." (author's abstract)
