Inhalt: Scientific collaborations shape ideas as well as innovations and are both the substrate for, and the outcome of, academic careers. Recent studies show that gender inequality is still present in many scientific practices ranging from hiring to peer-review processes and grant applications. In this work, we investigate gender-specific differences in collaboration patterns of more than one million computer scientists over the course of 47 years. We explore how these patterns change over years and career ages and how they impact scientific success. Our results highlight that successful male and female scientists reveal the same collaboration patterns: compared to scientists in the same career age, they tend to collaborate with more colleagues than other scientists, seek innovations as brokers and establish longer-lasting and more repetitive collaborations. However, women are on average less likely to adopt the collaboration patterns that are related with success, more likely to embed into ego networks devoid of structural holes, and they exhibit stronger gender homophily as well as a consistently higher dropout rate than men in all career ages.
Three worlds of marriage effects? Gendered marriage earning differences in the United States, Germany, and Sweden

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Being married is associated with many advantages. However, we do not know enough about the actual impact of entering marriage on individuals’ earnings, especially for women. In this paper, I examine the immediate and the short-term impact of marriage on men’s and women’s earnings in the United States, Germany, and Sweden. Studying the impact of marriage on earnings in three distinct socio-political settings provides insights into the context dependency of the link between marriage and earnings. Fixed effects models show that marriage transitions are not associated with women's earnings in the United States and Sweden. For German women, I find an earnings penalty for marriage. Once I adjust for selection into employment, I find that employed German women with low employment propensities may experience instantaneous earnings boosts when they enter marriage, but that among women who are more firmly attached to the labor market, there is a short-term marriage penalty. For men in all three countries, I find no effect of marital transitions once employment likelihood is taken into account." (author's abstract)

Inhalt: The Euromaidan revolution is already the third political revolution in Ukraine in recent times. Men and women participated equally in this revolution, but women are often described as "only" being helpers while men "made" the revolution and actively fought at the barricades. The article aims to reflect the gender roles of men and women in this revolution. Interviews, blog notes and scientific articles are utilised to show the tasks and responsibilities of men and women at the Maidan.
Genetische Ursachen sexueller Dimorphismen bei komplexen Erkrankungen
Titelübersetzung:Genetic roots of sexual dimorphisms in complex diseases

Inhalt: "The most frequent conditions affecting populations in developed countries are cardiovascular diseases, tumours, metabolic disorders, autoimmune and psychiatric diseases. All these disorders belong to the category of complex diseases, as their development is influenced by genetic as well as non-genetic factors. Many of these disorders arise with a marked sex/gender bias regarding incidence and/or progression. Differences in the sociocultural roles of men and women resulting in exposition towards different risk factors have been discussed as being causative. Recently, genetic studies have revealed that different genes might predispose men and women towards specific complex diseases. These genes display effects on disease risk preponderantly in one sex. Therefore, sex-/gender-dependent disease prevention measures and therapies appear to be necessary. This article focuses on the genetic aspects of differential disease risks of men and women. We present examples of sex-specific association in humans and in model organisms and discuss possible biological mechanisms and methodological problems." (author's abstract)
Remnant "Family": the role of women in the media discourse on families

Inhalt: How does gender affect discourse processes, particularly regarding the coverage of family issues? In order to explore this question, we focus on media representations of women in their roles as mothers on the one hand and journalists on the other and we compare the reporting of male and female journalists covering families. We refer to gender theory to examine processes of gender construction by different actors in the media and we draw on journalism theory to explain different reporting styles and strategies by male and female authors regarding discourse strategies, framing, and gender-stereotyping. Our methodological approaches include quantitative and qualitative content analyses and 14 semi-structured interviews with journalists, family researchers, and lobbyists. The sample includes coverage of families in general and that of large families in particular in German print media in the years 2011 and 2012, for a total of 1,100 texts. One of the key findings, not surprisingly, is that most of the journalists reporting on families are female. Similar to male journalists, however, they focus on the traditional family type despite the fact that various alternative forms of family life are now a social reality.

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The article provides an example of psycho-societal analysis of work related learning. Initially a conceptual framework of learning and life experience is established drawing on Alfred Lorenzer and Oskar Negt, and the interactional development of psychoanalysis. A case of learning experience from research into a retraining program for unskilled workers, exposing a very conflictual subjective experience of a traineeship, is presented and commented. The worker's experience is interpreted focusing on the gender aspects of the conflicts, seeing the learning process in the context of a work identity process, which is related to a career shift enforced by labor market transition requiring male workers to retrain for a social work profession which used to be female, and more widely to a reconfiguration of the societal relation between work and gender. The final section discusses the methodological framework for analyzing learning processes by means of interpreting language use. The notion of language game connects the level of unconscious social engagements and level of formal learning and knowledge, and the opportunity for a deeper understanding of professional learning and identity is indicated by reference to one more example."

The Effect of Gender and Ethnicity and their Intersection on Work Satisfaction and Earnings in Estonia, 1993-2008

Inhalt: "This article examines trends in the labour market position, defined in terms of three dimensions - earnings, perceived job security and overall job satisfaction - among four population groups in Estonia - Estonian men and women and Russian-speaking men and women. We explore how the labour market position of these groups changed between 1993 and 2008. We used data from 1993 and 2008, collected in the population survey Work, Family and Leisure, designed by the Institute of International and Social Studies at Tallinn University. We carried out a two-step analysis: first, we conducted descriptive analysis to explore changes in the labour market situation of men and women of two ethnic groups in the period of 1993-2008; and second, we used models of multivariate analysis of variances to examine how gender, ethnicity and occupational status as well as the intersection of these variables are related to earnings, job security and job satisfaction. We found that Estonian men have emerged as the most successful group in the labour market, while the labour market position of Russian-speaking women is the most disadvantaged compared to other groups in terms of earnings, job security and job satisfaction. We suggest that these labour market inequalities could be increasing, and that the interaction of gender and ethnicity might become increasingly important in shaping labour market outcomes." "Leichtere Beschäftigungen": Geschlechterdifferenz als Leitbild der Forstlichen Arbeitswissenschaft
Titelübersetzung:'Lighter work': gender difference as a general principle in Forest Work Science
Autor/in:
Westermayer, Till
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Forestry presents itself as a male domain. As a discipline, Forest Work Science (Forstliche Arbeitswissenschaft) has helped to shape this sphere of work since the 1920s. Content analysis of 'classic' texts from this sub-discipline of Forest Science allow the dominant gender image to be reconstructed as being based on differences in several dimensions. Women and men are described almost as different 'species'. That difference is in particular constructed in relation to physical ability and 'gender-specific' skills. Women are seen as being in need of protection. All these differences normalize the gendered division of work, assigning men the role of breadwinner and women that of being responsible for family work for the man. The article concludes by asking to what extent this differentiation still exists and wherein lie the advantages and disadvantages of switching from difference to diversity as the dominant mode of thinking in (Forestry) Work Science."
