Inhalt: The Euromaidan revolution is already the third political revolution in Ukraine in recent times. Men and women participated equally in this revolution, but women are often described as "only" being helpers while men "made" the revolution and actively fought at the barricades. The article aims to reflect the gender roles of men and women in this revolution. Interviews, blog notes and scientific articles are utilised to show the tasks and responsibilities of men and women at the Maidan.
Feminist thought(s) as dirty intellectuality: the case of Andrea Dworkin

Pivec, Natasa

Inhalt: The wide spectrum of feminist thoughts, from art to epistemology, which are centred around gender and its multi-leveled arrangements in society is, when not aligned with predominant epistemic premises or artistic standards of hegemonic masculinity, rendered as Other or dirty. The concept of Otherness is ascribed to the knower/ producer on behalf of her sex and her epistemic focus, which transgresses several dichotomous frameworks of the body-mind dualism, epistemological traditions, gendered categorization of professions, gender binarism and body norms of conventional femininity. The life and work of radical feminist Andrea Dworkin was analyzed in order to confi rm the theoretical premise of the article, namely that when a woman positions herself as a knower and produces knowledge, (self)categorized as a feminist, she is perceived as a threat to the system of structures, discourses and practices of the gender order.
Madeleine de Scudéry - Intellektuelle avant la lettre?
Titelübersetzung:Madeleine de Scudéry - an intellectual woman in early modern France
Autor/in:
Hergenhan, Jutta
Inhalt: Madeleine de Scudéry - an intellectual woman in early modern France In France, the idea of intellectual endeavour is closely associated with male actors defending the universal values of the Enlightenment. However, women already led an intellectual life back in 17th century France, notwithstanding contemporary social and gender-related conventions. As writers and salon hostesses, several of these women pleaded for more respectful gender relations and criticized existing inequalities between women and men. Madeleine de Scudéry was one of these women, who were called précieuses by their contemporaries. In both her literary writing and the choices she made in her personal life she confronted difficult topics for women, such as "education and knowledge", "marriage" and "female authorship". Madeleine de Scudéry adopted unconventional positions and took unorthodox personal decisions, and engaged in a profound refl ection of women's living conditions, which made her both an exceptional fi gure in her time and the prototype of an early intellectual.
A Genderless Protest: Women Confronting Romanian Communism
Autor/in:
Petrescu, Cristina
Quelle: Annals of the University of Bucharest / Political science series, 16 (2014) 2, S 79-101
Inhalt: Far from accomplishing its utopian plans of transforming society, communism did not turn gender equality into a reality either. This paper moves beyond the common-place approaches that simply underline the failures of this political system and presumes that women experienced communism in very diverse and often ambiguous ways, for public and private roles conflicted more often than not. From among the few individuals who dared to articulate critical thoughts on Romanian communism prior to its collapse of 1989, the present paper recuperates the experience of three women. Members of the urban educated elite, they believed nonetheless in different values and pursued different strategies of expressing discontent with the regime. These female critics of the communist system went beyond personal or group interests, but among the issues of public concern they raised none belonged to a feminist agenda. Yet, these women acted as if gender equality was a reality in Ceauşescu’s Romania: they considered themselves the equal partners of like-minded men, while their male peers accepted them as such, for equalitarian perceptions of genders shaped the public roles assumed by non-conformist Romanian intellectuals. The example of these three women does not prove that communism succeeded in redefining the status of women, but it illustrates how the urban educated social group experienced gender relations then. No feminists in thinking, these three women were so in their behavior. Their criticism of Ceauşescu’s communism was genderless, but it nonetheless strengthened the idea that women are no less than men.

Inhalt: This article focuses on 20th-century terrorist phenomena as gendered objects of knowledge produced and disseminated through history books, mass media and state institutions. By taking 1970s West German terrorism as my field of inquiry, this article will critically discuss how a bourgeois understanding of violence as fundamentally masculine has shaped the way terrorism has been represented, conceptualized and historicized thus far. I will go on to problematize the mas-culine gaze of mass media and state institutions and their tendency to objectify the terrorist. Last but not least, I will delineate how mass media and historiog-raphy of terrorism have relied on a narrative structure that pits rebellious sons and masculine daughters against figural and literal fathers, a frame that is overtly masculine and familial. In so doing I will point to blind spots in the study of 1970s terrorism, namely masculinity and the gender of state institutions. My goal is thus to show how not just individual and symbolic, but also institutional facets of the bourgeois gender order influence the way terrorism has been conceptualized and historicized thus far.

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article explores the authors' experiences with negotiating tensions when conducting research. As three female researchers in various stages of their academic careers, they describe their own reflexive accounts of the research process as they negotiated their roles and responsibilities in relation to academic institutions and feminism. They discuss the literature related to responsibilities of academics, the tensions associated with conducting research, and the feminist methodologies addressing gendered issues in the current study. The authors contextualize the research project by outlining their positionalities and the methodology for their reflexive process. They then discuss their experiences of negotiating ourselves within an academic institution and within feminism. They conclude by discussing the importance of creating a feminist space through collaboration within academic institutions." (author's abstract)

Inhalt: Working in agriculture and industry, as nurses with the Red Cross, or helping as auxiliaries in the Army, women are to many the unknown and unpraysed he- roes of the First World War. Their contribution to the war effort, sufferings and trauma have been ignored by governments at the time, and covered by the Great Deeds of politicians and generals, and the deafening noise of the great, heroic battles. From this perspective, the Romanian case is a paradigmatic one. Using the models developed by Gill Thomas and Maria Bucur, the present study investigates the participation of Western and Romanian women at war as reflected in documents, media, diaries. Following this, asymetric compari- son will help underline the similarities and differences between the ”home front” in England, France and Germany on one hand, and Romania on the other hand. Women emancipation, pacifism, socialism, feminism, war, trauma, and memory; are but a few issues introduced with this study. My intention was not to write a ”herstory”, defending women, and providing heroines, but to open a new, unexplored area of research that is too often considered unimpor- tant or un-accessible. The main purpose was to analyse the impact of interven- tionist state policies on women life, and to reveal some European, and national outcomes of it. In this sense, the Great War represented an excellent case.

Geschlechternormen-inkonforme Körperinszenierungen - Demokratisierung, De-Konstruktion oder Reproduktion des sexistischen Geschlechterverhältnisses?
Titelübersetzung:Gender norms - non-conforming body conceptions - democratization. Deconstruction or reproduction of sexist gender relations?
Autor/in:
Schulze, Detlef Georgia
Quelle: Berlin, 2005. 384 S
Inhalt: The present study dealing with the topic 'geschlechternormen-inkonforme Körperinszenierungen' (approximately: body styling/ body formation which is contrary to the hegemonic gender rules) is a theoretically based, empirical scrutiny of Judith Butler's thesis, that there exists a possible connection between queer practices and the subversion of existing gender hierarchy. The thesis explores the relationship between body practices and other practices, especially labour and political practice. The term 'geschlechternormen-inkonforme Körperinszenierungen' refers to three practices or three different ways of a person's behaviour towards his or her own body: it refers firstly to transsexuals, who changed their body physically; secondly it refers to transgender people, who occasionally or permanently do cross dressing in everyday life without having changed their bodies physically; and thirdly on drag kings and drag queens who show a different sex on stage than in everyday life. All people stage a 'geschlechternormen-inkonforme Geschlechtlichkeit', that means a gender that doesn't coincides with their "true" or "natural" sex due to hegemonic criteria. The method of the empirical part of the study consists of obtaining data through the 'Problemzentriertes Interview' (problem-focussed interview) invented by Witzel, and the analysis of the data through the 'Qualitative Inhaltsanalyse' (qualitative content analysis) invented by Mayring. The study assumes that the deconstruction of domination includes the disappearance of the social groups (in the case at issue: men and women), between whom exists a relation of domination, because that groups are products of the practices of domination. The study shows, that – far from this – there happens within the interviewed sample a permanent reproduction of genders and gender hierarchies. The .pdf-file of the entire thesis consists summaries in English, French, Castilian, and German language longer than the present abstract.

Women and the colonial state: essays on gender and modernity in the Netherlands Indies 1900-1942
Autor/in:
Locher-Scholten, Elsbeth

Inhalt: Woman and the Colonial State deals with the ambiguous relationship between women of both the European and the Indonesian population and the colonial state in the former Netherlands Indies in the first half of the twentieth century. Based on new data from a variety of sources: colonial archives, journals, household manuals, children's literature, and press surveys, it analyses the women-state relationship by presenting five empirical studies on subjects, in which women figured prominently at the time: Indonesian labour, Indonesian servants in colonial homes, Dutch colonial fashion and food, the feminist struggle for the vote and the intense debate about monogamy of and by women at the end of the 1930s. An introductory essay combines the outcomes of the case studies and relates those to debates about Orientalism, the construction of whiteness, and to questions of modernity and the colonial state formation.
