Inhalt: Feminists, among others, have found Eve's representation in Milton's Paradise Lost problematic over the last centuries. Some of them consider Eve to be Adam’s inferior while others find traces of egalitarian relationship between them. This study uses Penelope Brown and Stephen C. Levinson's Politeness Theory and applies it to the conversations between Adam and Eve prior to the Fall in order to address this issue. It is demonstrated in this article that, before the Fall, Eve always exercises less power than Adam except for a brief moment that she achieves equality.
Western feminist consciousness in Buchi Emecheta's The joys of motherhood

Inhalt: Feminism is a collection of movements which struggles for women's rights. Focusing on gender as a basis of women's sexual oppression, feminist scholarship attempts to establish equal rights for women politically, economically, socially, personally, etc. The Joys of Motherhood highlights Buchi Emecheta's critical view toward colonialism and racism affecting Third world women's lives. Besides this, Emecheta goes further to display African women's invisibility and marginalization-which were out of sight for a long time-in terms of some aspects of Western feminist discourse. Her creative discourse, in this regard, casts further light upon the issue of gender oppression in African feminist study. Hence, this study attempts to examine the way in which Emecheta furthers Western feminist ideology.
Images von Gewicht: Soziale Bewegungen, Queer Theory und Kunst in den USA
Herausgeber/in:
Hieber, Lutz; Villa, Paula-Irene
Quelle: Bielefeld (Gender Studies), 2015. 262 S

Titelübersetzung:The reproach of postfeminism: observations on feminist self-conceptions among young theatre artists and journalists in Missy Magazine
Autor/in:

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Since cultural scientist Angela McRobbie began publishing her studies, at the latest, female artists working in pop culture have been suspected of commercializing and trivializing feminist issues. The reproach of post-feminism can often be heard in Germany too in the debate about 'old vs. new feminism' in relation to the art of young and successful women. Missy Magazine portrays various pop cultural female artists, whereby there is always some reference to feminism. This article is dedicated to the female theatre-makers portrayed in Missy Magazine and their feminist self-conceptions. The category 'post-feminism' is thereby subjected to a critical examination and is compared to contemporary female theatre-makers' self-image. Drawing on the theory of post-dramatic theatre, the similarities that exist in a young theatre generation are underlined." (author's abstract)

Unpacking feminist consciousness and racial politics: representation and the vanguard in contemporary Cuban visual culture
Autor/in:
Lamazares, Alexander
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "In the 1990s and 2000s, sensing that the critical situation had loosened with the fall of the Berlin Wall, post-Soviet aesthetics in Cuba ranged from bloodletting to bitching and from comical to grandiose. How then do women artists in Cuba deal with the contradictions, ironies, ambiguities and social negotiations in Cuban life? This paper will look at how Cuba's artists have participated and contributed to this discourse on gender and racial politics. Now more than ever, the artistic production represents a quasi-independent space in dialogue with the State in their views of the revolutionary experience. Drawing on a variety of experimental and conceptual contemporary Cuban artists this paper shows how they have challenged accepted artistic and political discourse not only in their own society but in the global arena, reversing conventional notions of 'center' and 'periphery' and embodying a provocative, ironic, humorous, and omnivorously critical approach. Their work sheds light on the everyday life of Cuban women living on the Island and abroad, gender and racial politics, sexuality and power, and the discourse of global feminism in a post-Soviet context." Inhalt: At the heart of Stripping, Sex, and Popular Culture lies a very personal story, of author Catherine Roach's response to the decision of her life-long best friend to become an exotic dancer. Catherine and Marie grew up together in Canada and moved to the USA to enroll in PhD programs at prestigious universities. For various reasons, Marie left her program and instead chose to work as a stripper. The author, at first troubled and yet fascinated by her friend's decision, follows Marie's journey into the world of stripping as an observer and analyst. She finds that this world raises complex questions about gender, sexuality, fantasy, feminism, and even spirituality. Moving from first hand interviews with dancers and others, the book broadens into a provocative and accessible examination of the current popularity of "striptease culture," with sex-saturated media imagery, thongs gone mainstream, and stripper aerobics at your local gym. Stripping, Sex, and Popular Culture scrutinizes the naked truth of a lucrative industry whose norms are increasingly at the center of contemporary society.
