Inhalt: Gender roles of Syrian women started to shift in 2011, in light of the Syrian conflict. This shift was a response to the difficult situations which Syrian women faced inside Syria as well as in the neighboring countries to which they fled in the attempt to find safer living conditions. However, the uncertain situation and the precarious working and living conditions in Syria and the neighboring countries forced many Syrian women and families to flee to Europe, with the highest number to Germany, facing the challenge of a new culture and new social norms. The main purpose of this study is to evaluate if and how the gender roles of Syrian women who fled to Berlin, Germany, have shifted. Using semi-structured interviews conducted in the period July - December 2016, the study illustrates the challenges and opportunities they face, both as women and as refugees, and in how far these affect their gender roles.

Socialization and gendered biographical agency in a multicultural migration context: the life history of a young Moroccan woman in Germany

Inhalt: "In light of the challenges of globalization, hybridization of cultures, and transnational migration movements worldwide, some central deficits of socialization theory have been identified. As a response to these challenges, the necessity of developing 'biographical socialization research' and a 'subject-oriented socialization theory' are underlined. In this paper, the notion of 'biographical agency', embedded in the social and temporal context of biographies, is proposed to overcome shortcomings of the theories of socialization. Drawing on the concepts of biographical knowledge, biographical work and biographical reflexivity, biographical research can show how individuals develop biographical agency and engage in meaningful social actions within their life courses under the conditions of globalization. On the basis of Samira's case, I will point out the kinds of multiple exclusion/ inclusion mechanisms that operate in multicultural societies, mechanisms produced both by majority and minority groups, and how daughters of migrants can acquire biographical resources through their socialization in multicultural contexts to struggle against hierarchical gender norms, conflicting expectations, and restrictive social sites as well as enlarge their sphere of action." Three women in a city: crossing borders and negotiating national belonging
Autor/in:
Pape, Elise; Takeda, Ayumi; Guhlich, Anna
Quelle: Zeitschrift für Qualitative Forschung, 15 (2014) 1-2, S 39-56
Inhalt: "The major theoretical literature has considered the concept of nation primarily from a macro level. This article explores the question of national belonging departing from an individual's point of view, more precisely from the life story of three migrant women. Migration and transnational practices have challenged the perception of the homogeneity of nations, questioning the idea of fixed boundaries, and showing how different national and social forms of belonging may develop simultaneously through migration experience. Drawing on biographical interviews conducted with three migrant women, Amina El Asri, Gule Yildiz and Zuzana Svitá, the present analysis focusses on the construction of national belonging of the women in an intersectional perspective. Mrs. El Asri, Mrs. Yildiz and Mrs. Svitá originate from different countries (respectively Morocco, Turkey and Czechia). They have different social origins and ages, but share the same sex, their residence in the same city in West Germany and the fact that they all have children. The analysis reveals the profound impact of the socio-historical contexts the women come from on their construction of national belonging, but also of age and of transmission processes to their children. It is mainly through passing on their mother tongue and reshaping their conception of national belonging over time that the women manage to establish strong ties to their children, and contribute, by articulating different lines of belonging, to the redefinition of (trans)nation building processes."

Quelle: Bielefeld (Globaler lokaler Islam), 2002. 336 S

Titelübersetzung:Female Turkish entrepreneurs and wage or salary earners in ethnic industrial trades in Berlin
Autor/in:
Hillmann, Felicitas
Zuliefererbeziehungen. Die Zusammenfassung zeigt Forschungsdesiderate auf." (Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Ethnic economies - and especially the 'Turkish' ethnic economy - already have become and are predicted to become even more important for the German national economy in the near future. This discussion paper seeks to shed light on a rather 'hidden aspect' of Berlins Turkish ethnic economy: the structure and role of female labour and self-employment therein. Preliminary results of a survey on (self)employed Turkish women in Berlin are presented. The paper starts with a rough discussion on the significance of the gender concept in the international debate on ethnic economies - including findings on self-employed minority and immigrant women in Europe. The second section then focuses on Berlin and sketches the recent labour market situation among the the lines of gender and ethnicity through an analysis of the official labour market data at hand. Existing knowledge on the patterns of the Turkish ethnic economy rounds off the picture. The third section presents exploratory empirical data concentrating exclusively on female Turkish entrepreneurs and employees. The presentation of the empirical results focuses on four basic areas: the social, family and educational background of the female Turkish entrepreneurs and employees; forms and patterns of work organisation; the importance of kinship and household obligations; and the position of the business in the 'ethnic community'. Our research findings suggest that the concept of 'ethnic businesses' as it is usually presented in the literature, turns out to be hardly applicable in the case of Turkish women in the ethnic economy in Berlin. The women entrepreneurs - differently to the Turkish women working as employees - do overwhelmingly nor rely on 'ethnic resources', nor they do identify with the Turkish ethnic economy or do employ preferably 'ethnic' workers or make use of family-members. The conclusions outline in which direction further research should look." (author's abstract)
