Inhalt: The study examines the effect of long-distance commuting on the division of domestic labor in heterosexual couples. A long journey to work can affect other areas of life. Commuters often have lower life satisfaction and their intimate relationships may be impaired by mental stress. When looking at domestic labor the question arises of who is in charge of managing the household and childcare. Do women still adopt the "lion's share of housework" or take over the "second shift" if they spend part of the day on long commutes to work and back home? A long commute is defined as a journey to work of at least 45 minutes, daily or several times a week. We present the results of pooled regression analysis and fixed effects regressions conducted on data from the German Panel Analysis of Intimate Relationships and Family Dynamics (pairfam) for the years 2013, 2015, and 2016. The pooled analysis suggests a moderate association between a woman’s long commute and her partner's engagement in housework and childcare, especially when she commutes daily. Instead of living 'reversed roles', the partners share such tasks. However, when the association between a woman's long commute and her partner's engagement in childcare is estimated exclusively with fixed regression, it remains significant. If the man is a long-distance commuter, most often his partner is solely responsible for all household tasks. Relative labor market position and income distribution within the couples, as well as adherence to gender roles explain the effects of long-distance commuting on labor division.

Inhalt: Educational expansion, the massive increase of women’s labor force participation, and assortative mating have reduced asymmetries in educational achievements and in career resources between women and men in virtually every Western society. This paper provides an analysis of the association between partners' education, parenthood, and spouses' relative labor supply in East and West Germany. Education is considered from two angles: as an indicator for resources on the labor market or as an indicator for gender attitudes. We apply cross-sectional data from the 2011 German Microcensus, comprising 57,366 couple households. For our estimations, we use General Linear Models. Because of high case numbers, we are able to estimate several interaction effects in statistical powerful detail. We find that (1) a woman's share of paid work is higher, the higher she is educated; (2) women with higher education than their male partners realize higher shares of relative employment (in comparison to other women); (3) women rarely realize a share of 50% or higher on average in any educational composition; (4) especially young children have a huge impact on women's labor supply; and (5) women's comparative educational advantages are more important for their share of paid work in West than in East Germany. Neither interpretation of relative education can explain the overall picture of couples’ division of paid work alone. Depending on parenthood, the age of the youngest child in the household, and the regional context, either normative, or economic exchanges between partners seem to drive the association between relative education, and relative labor supply of women. We demonstrate the usefulness of two theoretical approaches of framing education as an explanatory concept.

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "'New' or 'active' fatherhood is increasingly discussed in the family research literature, yet it is unclear what these terms entail, and which factors associate with the practice of such 'active fatherhood'. With the 'AID:A II' survey (Growing Up in Germany: Everyday Life, Wave 2) the present paper uses the most up-to-date data that chart fathers' everyday activities for and with their children. A composite indicator for 'active fatherhood' was built and the key determinants of father involvement were then explored. The results suggest that the employment of both parents play an important role: The more hours the father has to work beyond full-time working hours, the less likely the father is to be actively involved in childcare. Longer maternal working hours and greater proportional contribution of the mother to the family income, instead, make an active fatherhood more likely. In addition, the satisfaction with couple relationship as well as the gender concept of both parents are significant predictors of father involvement." (author's abstract)

Inhalt: Social support is often described as an exclusively positively acting factor. Its absence is said to mean negative consequences for individuals. This article shows that the supply and dependence of inter-generational social support can have negative consequences and pertains to persisting unequal gender roles and a gendered division of labor in relationships. Based on qualitative interviews, conducted in eastern and western Germany, with young adults (28-30 years old) and their parents, we hypothesize, that the bigger supply of inter-generational support of grandparents for their children and grandchildren and an alleged dependence on these transfers is especially responsible for impeding the modernization of traditional role models assigning women to the role as a mother and housewife. However, less availability and dependence on this kind of social support in eastern Germany, contribute to a more flexible form of role allocation in a relationship.

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article deals with enactments of intimacy and love in polyamorous relationships. We conducted narrative interviews that included the participants' relationship biographies. In particular, we focused on self-definitions and accounts of everyday life in polyamorous relationships. We found no predefined subject positions but rather relational positions within a network of relationships that are up for negotiation when constellations shift. The boundaries between different forms of partnership are often drawn by actively designating a relationship. However, we also found the very same practices of intimacy (sentiments of love, intense personal relationships or sexuality) in non-designated relationships. Relationship constellations are, above all, the outcome of constant negotiation. These negotiation practices include super-individualized subjects with highly individual needs on the one hand and subjects with eroding boundaries on the other, because negotiation practices force them to be honest and open. We call the emerging subjects 'polyviduals', that is individuals who are intrinsically connected to others in their network, but with highly individualized needs. Contrary to our expectations, we found hardly any predefined accounts of gendered needs or gender roles in our interviews. In general, polyviduals narrate themselves as ungendered negotiation partners." (author's abstract)
Gendered division of housework in Germany - the role of self-employment, relative resources and gender role orientation

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The purpose of this paper is to investigate the division of housework within couples in Germany by taking employment status, relative resources and gender role orientation into consideration. We use a large scale primary data collection that deliberately oversampled self-employed and included questions on role orientation. While selfemployment and work autonomy was related to a lower share of housework for men, rather the opposite was true for women. Furthermore, the results indicate that the relative resources and bargaining theory and the time budget approach seem to be less relevant for female self-employed compared to their employed counterparts. Our data allowed for a direct control of the gender role orientation and shed more light on the relationship between relative resources and the share of housework. A traditional role orientation was found to be highly significant for the share of housework for men and women but did not moderate the effect of relative resources. Thereby our study supports the distinct effect of gender role orientation. This can be seen as an important contribution to the ongoing discussion where relative resources are interpreted in the light of gender role orientation." (author's abstract)

Titelübersetzung:Decision making within couples in deprived circumstances concerning major purchases and leisure time activities
Autor/in:
Bethmann, Arne; Berngruber, Anne
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article analyses the division of decision power within couples. Based on data from the second wave of the panel study 'Labor Market and Social Security', the allocation of power between the spouses is studied with special regard to couples receiving the German 'Unemployment Benefit II'. In deprived circumstances, decisions on major purchases are more often made solely by the woman. On the other hand, decisions on leisure time activities among these couples are less often taken by the women alone. Multinomial logistic regressions indicate that the distribution of decision power among couples in receipt of benefits is governed by other factors than among couples without receipt. The influence of the economic resources that both partners contribute is only visible in the non-recipient group. In both groups, modern gender role attitudes are often connected with a more egalitarian decision-making process regarding major purchases. Again for decisions about leisure time activities, this relation can only be found among the non-recipients. Apart from these, the authors find additional factors influencing the division of decision power, like individuals with low education deciding more egalitarian in the Unemployment Benefit II group."
