(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Universities in Germany and Switzerland have undergone a number of reforms and changes in the last decade. Particularly the Bologna reform, but also the increase of students during the last ten years raises the concern that the quality of universities might have decreased. The authors investigate whether and how students' attitudes and behavior changed in this period. Their data consists of two extensive surveys of the student population of the University in Bern, Switzerland, which were conducted in 2001 and 2012. The results show that the socio-demographic composition of the student body did indeed change. However, students' reasons for choosing a subject, studying effort, achievement motivation, labour market participation or students' time pressure did not change. However, students were more interested in achieving a prestigious social position and high income in 2012 as in 2001. Overall, the results suggest that a reform of the reform does not seem to be necessary." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Many students work permanently or temporarily while studying. Against this background the article analyses, under which preconditions students are jobbing, and which predictors influence the amount of working hours. Moreover, the article examines the conditions permitting a good compatibility between the demands of studying on the one hand and jobbing on the other hand. The results show that the costs of living and studying are a key motive for having a job. A good compatibility between the demands of education and employment is strongly influenced by job characteristics, but also by the study and living conditions of the student. Finally, the discussion addresses how universities can set out conditions for a good compatibility between the claims of studying and jobbing." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Although study courses at German universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulen) are highly structured and provide well-defined curricula, their drop out rates are comparably high to those at universities. Yet, students tend to drop out earlier at Fachhochschulen. The analysis deals with the question whether students' levels of entrance qualification or influences related to gender are likely to cause an early drop out and what can be done to prevent high drop out rates during the first semesters. Available data suggest that certain fields of study are particularly prone to cause higher drop out rates and that students with an entrance qualification for studies at Fachhochschulen (Fachhochschulreife) are more likely to give up their studies than those with a general higher education entrance qualification (Abitur). Moreover, it is shown that, at large, more young women than young men leave their study courses. Responsible persons at four Fachhochschulen were questioned about their institutions' activities to support freshers. Finally, possible measures are listed to prevent early drop outs in the future."

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The article deals with empirical studies and experiences regarding the procedures of German universities and colleges for selecting their students. Considering the growing interest in significantly positioning the respective institution at the German higher education market as well as the concern about equality of opportunity and fairness in student selection, it is important to apply selection instruments which meet these requirements. Many empirical studies show that the instruments being used are not sufficiently able to identify students who will be successful and at the same time to take into account criteria which do justice to the institutions' specific profiles." (Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Whereas the aims of internationalising the research sector in Germany and attracting international junior academics are politically postulated, they are first of all measured in quantitative terms. The open question is how the integration of foreign junior academics in the German scientific environment can be supported and organised more effectively. One possibility of qualitative internationalisation lies in the institutionalisation of special modules, curricula and meeting opportunities for international doctoral candidates, as they are realised in the 'International Forum for Doctoral Candidates'. Based on the experiences gained within this forum, basis principles of qualitative internationalisation of doctoral training are extracted." (author's abstract)
Education staff and students under neoliberal pressure : a British-German comparison
Titelübersetzung:Lehrpersonal und Studenten unter dem Druck des Neoliberalismus : Deutschland und Großbritannien im Vergleich
Autor/in:

Quelle: Beiträge zur Hochschulforschung, Jg. 27 (2005) H. 4, S. 6-29
Inhalt: "This paper aims to compare the way in which neo-liberal trends are impacting on the attitudes and values of staff and students in the United Kingdom and Germany. Research is based upon qualitative and quantitative data from a dozen university institutions in each country, where individual interviews were conducted with staff, and questionnaires were completed both by them and by their students. In both countries many current trends are not deeply accepted or internalised by staff. There are startling differences in student satisfaction, perceived human relationships within the academe, as well as working conditions in the higher education sector. Though in many respects the same kind of re-structuring is taking place in each system, there is only partial convergence in attitudes and values between the German and British respondents in this study."
