Inhalt: "Bringing more Women into Technology is currently a much discussed theme with a strong economic Background: the shortage of qualified technicians in high tech industry. This causes an increasing demand for specialized female technicians thus resulting in an increase of versatile initiatives for the transition from university to the Labor market; however their effect was unconvincingly so far. The project CHANGES was carried out at Vienna University of Technology (TU) together with two Austrian companies positioned in the field of cooperative research. The aim was to accompany female technicians in their career entry. Based on the experiences of CHANGES, this article reflects systematically upon the conception and realization of measures at the intersection of universities and companies and provides recommendations for further discussion. Starting point for further considerations are the socio-scientific debates about affirmative action programs in the field of engineering science. The article concludes with practical recommendations and shall facilitate the recruiting and engagement of female personnel in the field of technology." (author's abstract)

Titelübersetzung:Promotion of women between heterogeneous logics : the case of a postdocprogram in German Excellence Initiative
Autor/in:
Petschick, Grit; Schmidt, Robert J.; Norkus, Maria
Inhalt: "New instruments of promotion policy enforce scientific and equality policy requirements on to the training of postdoc researchers in the universities, with the intention of reducing the wellknown difficulties of women in this phase. The paper presents a case-study, which analyses the measures to promote women within the junior researcher program of a natural sciences cluster, founded in the German Excellence Initiative. It is shown that these measures sometimes lead toparadoxical consequences for the careers of the women enrolled, due to the constantly changing interplay between the logics of science and equality, and the organizational structures." Technikkultur im Wandel : Ergebnisse der Geschlechterforschung in Technischen Universitäten
Titelübersetzung:Change of technology culture : results of gender studies in technical universities
Autor/in:
Ihsen, Susanne
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "During the last ten years, the numbers of qualified and interested young women in science and engineering have continuously grown. But although young women perform better at school than their male counterparts, their application rates for technical universities are low. One reason could be that study and job profiles in this sector are traditionally male-oriented. Integrated gender studies in science and engineering show new perspectives for these institutions. This paper first explains the resistance towards change in technical culture. It discusses the possible role and contribution of gender studies in this technical culture and analyses the chances for change. Finally, the paper presents results of a survey on the situation of 4000 first-year students, focusing on the position of women in technical universities and showing their motivation and conflicts in the integration phase."
Titelübersetzung:Marie Curie and her laboratory : promoting women's right to science?
Autor/in:
Hat Marie Curie also Frauenförderung 'avant la lettre' betrieben?" (Textauszug)
Inhalt: "During the last twenty years gender studies of science have shown that science in its social aspects is marked by gender-based exclusions. Regarding the laboratory built up and directed by Marie Curie between 1906 and 1934, it is astonishing to find a remarkable number of mainly foreign female scientists. The author outlines how Curie used the university system to expand her staff and discusses her possibilities to promote women against the background of the educational system in France. Curie's staffing policy is related to her experiences during her scientific education, her teaching at the 'Ecole normale de jeunes filles' in Sèvres, her marriage to Pierre Curie and her relation to her daughter Irène Curie." Retaining undergraduate women in science, engineering, and technology : a survey of a student organisation
Autor/in:
Wasburn, Mara H.; Miller, Susan G.
Quelle: Journal of college student retention, Vol. 6 (2004) No. 2, S. 155-168
Inhalt: "National Council for Research on Women finds that much of the progress that women
have made in science, engineering, and technology has stalled or eroded. As we enter
the new millennium, there will be an increasing need for a scientifically and technologically
literate workforce. A student organization, Women in Technology, was formed at Purdue
University-West Lafayette in 1998 in response to data indicating that there had been
no increase in the number of women enrolled in the University's School of Technology
over the past five years. Such data were consistent with those produced by national
studies indicating that the trend of increasing numbers of women enrolling in engineering,
science, and technology programs in American colleges and universities, established
in the preceding two decades, had ceased. The aim of Women in Technology was to attract
more women to the School, and reduce the attrition rate of women already in the program
by serving as a well-recognized, formal context in which they could receive mentoring
and in which they could find stable social support to help them achieve their academic
and career objectives. This article discusses an overview of the organization, the
results of a survey of members' undergraduate classroom experiences, student-generated
strategies for addressing the concerns revealed in the survey, and the implementation
of those strategies." (author's abstract)|

Widening paths to success, improving the environment, and moving toward lessons learned from the experiences of Powre and CBL awardees
Autor/in:
Rosser, Sue V.; Daniels, Jane Z.
Quelle: Journal of women and minorities in science and engineering, Vol. 10 (2004) No. 2, S. 131-148
Inhalt: "To better understand the barriers and discouragements encountered by female faculty members in science and engineering, this article compares the experience of National Science Foundation-funded Professional Opportunities for Women in Research and Education (POWRE) awardees and Clare Boothe Luce (CBL) Professorship recipients. Because most POWRE awardees work at research institutions, and many CBL professors teach at small liberal arts colleges, this study helps in understanding the experiences of female faculty members across a broad spectrum of academic settings. Their experiences suggest positive changes in institutional policies or practices to increase the satisfaction, retention, and success of female faculty members infields in which they are the least well represented. The retention of female faculty members becomes critical for attracting undergraduate students as they consider the wisdom of choosing careers in academia." (author's abstract)
Improving the graduate school experience for women in mathematics : the EDGE program
Autor/in:
Bozeman, Sylvia T.; Hughes, Rhonda J.
Quelle: Journal of women and minorities in science and engineering, Vol. 10 (2004) No. 3, S. 243-254
Inhalt: "For over a decade, Spelman College and Bryn Mawr College have collaborated on initiatives designed to increase the presence of women, with a special focus on women of color, in the upper ranks of mathematical science. The most recent initiative is the EDGE Program (Enhancing Diversity in Graduate Education), which addresses this challenge by attempting to decrease the loss of talent from U.S. graduate programs. To this end, the program provides structures that help women make successful transitions from undergraduate into graduate mathematics programs, redirect or refocus their ambitions when programs are inappropriate or unsuitable, and, ultimately, enable them to 'accumulate advantages' that will empower them and foster success in their careers. A broader goal of this program is to diversify the mathematics community by creating models for mathematics programs that allow people from all backgrounds and cultures to thrive, advance, and contribute to the profession." Die Erfahrungen von Preisträgerinnen : Beispiele erfolgreicher Studien- und Berufswahl von Frauen in ingenieurwissenschaftlichen Studiengängen in Bayern
Titelübersetzung:Experiences of female prizewinners : examples of a successful choice of academic studies and career by women in engineering science channels of academic studies in Bavaria
Autor/in:
Stewart, Gerdi
(ICA2)

Inhalt: "This article describes a study of the National Science Foundation's Program for Women and Girls (PWG) (now called the Program for Gender Equity in Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and Technology) conducted by the Urban Institute between 1998 and 2000. The study assessed the PWG's contributions to the field of science, mathematics, engineering, and technology (SMET) education and gender equity. The study found that the PWG successfully effected both positive, short-term changes in human capital and long-term changes in knowledge capital and social capital resources to improve equity in SMET."
