(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "In their future profession, students studying to become teachers make a significant contribution to the political socialization of the younger generation. Therefore it is important to explore their political democratic values. The indicators covered in a standardized questionnaire point to an ambivalence and indifference. Although these students have a pronounced political interest and a self-positioning leaning to the left, democratic principles are sufficiently deep-seated in only half of them. Multivariate analysis shows the co-variation of these aspects. Additionally, there are specific effects of gender and the number of semesters studied. Other characteristics such as origin and the subjects studied play a minor role." (author's abstract)

Inhalt: "The lack of new students in the MINT subjects - particularly the lack of women - is a reason for numerous root cause analyzes. The author reviews this field from the opposite direction. In her article 'Male-dominated computer world - women's paths to informatics' she further unveils this phenomenon by analyzing biographies of women, who already found their way into computer science. In her biographical approach, the author has these women report on their motives for choosing informatics. There are many reasons why relatively few women are studying MINT subjects. As the author points out, social stereotypes play a major rote when choosing subjects. But causes can be found in learning theory as well. Students (and mostly female students) are impaired because teaching in science-related lessons often benefits serial learners, while holistic learners - to which the majority of students belong - have their difficulties with this kind of teaching. And since students use preferences and achievements in school to predict a possible success in their studies they turn away from MINT subjects." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "In this article we investigate the relationship between academic teachers' attractiveness and their students' evaluations of teaching. Furthermore it is examined, whether teachers' grading influences students' evaluations of teaching. Using data from an experimental design, hypotheses about attractiveness effects, frog-pond-effects, moderating gender effects and influences of grading are empirically tested. Controlling for confounding factors we find a very weak attractiveness effect, which can partly, but not only be ascribed to beauty's productivity enhancing influence. Thereby, independently from the raters' sex, female teachers profit from their looks. In contrast to that attractive male teachers are even sanctioned more strongly by their students for difficult tests than unattractive teachers. The frog-pond-hypothesis cannot empirically be supported: the attractiveness of teachers' colleagues has no influence on the attractiveness effect. However, reciprocal evaluation behavior can consistently be found in the theoretical expected manner. It is substantially more relevant for students' evaluations of teaching than attractiveness effects are. Alternative explanations for this grading effect can be excluded." (author's abstract)

(ICE2)

Gender and the changing face of higher education : a feminized future?
Autor/in:

Details
Inhalt: "A notable feature of higher education in many countries over the last few decades has been the dramatic rise in the proportion of female students. Women now outnumber men as undergraduate students in the majority of OECD countries, fuelling concerns that men are deserting degree-level study as women overtake them both numerically and in terms of levels of achievement. The assertion is that higher education is becoming increasingly 'feminized' - reflecting similar claims in relation to schooling and the labour market. At the same time, there are persistent concerns about degree standards, with allegations of 'dumbing down'. This raises questions about whether the higher education system to which more women have gained access is now of less value, both intrinsically and in terms of labour market outcomes, than previously. This ground-breaking book examines these issues in relation to higher education in the UK and globally. It provides a thorough analysis of debates about 'feminization', asking: To what extent do patterns of participation continue to reflect and (re)construct wider social inequalities of gender, social class and ethnicity? How far has a numerical increase in women students challenged the cultures, curriculum and practices of the university? What are the implications for women, men and the future of higher education? Drawing on international and national data, theory and research, 'Gender and the Changing Face of Higher Education' provides an accessible but nuanced discussion of the 'feminization' of higher education for postgraduates, policy-makers and academics working in the field." 'Stop making it such a big issue' : perceptions and experiences of gender inequality by undergraduates at a British University

Inhalt: "This paper focuses on the experiences and perceptions of gender inequality by undergraduates at a British University with strong historical traditions. Contrary to a 'post-feminist' rhetoric stating that gender inequalities no longer exist in higher education in the UK, or at least not at an undergraduate level, results of a questionnaire and interviews show that gender inequality does still persist in this institutional setting. However, we also found reluctance among students, particularly female students, to recognise or articulate this as discrimination. Instead, there was a tendency to downplay or deny such inequalities, and resistance to such matters being raised. Drawing on existing literature in the field, we suggest this might be a 'coping mechanism', as well as indicative of the 'post-feminist' milieu. The paper then reflects on the implications of these findings, particularly for those seeking to address gender inequalities in such an institutional environment. Drawing on identity politics theory, as well as the authors' own activist experiences, we argue that while recognising women as a discriminated group may promote gender differentiation, this may still go some way towards practically combating 'androcentric norms' (Fraser, Nancy (1995). From redistribution to recognition? Dilemmas of justice in a 'post-socialist' age, New Left Review, 212, 68 93) and thus gender inequality in universities." (author's abstract)
