Negotiating the glass ceiling : careers of senior women in the academic world
Herausgeber/in:
David, Miriam; Woodward, Diana
Quelle: London: Falmer Press, 1998. VI, 216 S.
Inhalt: "Why is it that in many universities the number of women professors can literally be counted on the fingers of one hand, while the men number in the hundreds? Why are women academics so relatively disadvantaged and men so firmly in control? In an attempt to find answers to these questions, Negotiating the Glass Ceiling gathers together the unique personal reflections of sixteen eminent women working in higher education across the world. These reflections document some of the changing patterns of women's lives in higher education since the war, a time of massive social change within higher education itself, as well as in women's lives outside higher education. They also illustrate that the changes that have occurred have been hard won and not without consequencesfor the women involved. The book is divided into three sections. The first four accounts provide an international perspective, followed by six pioneering women's accounts of transforming academe. The last section contains varied accounts of women still developing their careers in the 'man-centred university' sector. All these stories bear witness to the wide tapestry of cultural, socio-economic andeducational change and how they have been experienced within the field of higher education by this unique blend of challenging women. As we move towards the millenium, what lessons can we draw about the future from them?" (authors' abstract)

The origins of sex differences in science
Autor/in:
Long, J. Scott
Quelle: Social forces : an international journal of social research associated with the Southern Sociological Society, Vol. 68 (1990) No. 4, S. 1297-1315
Inhalt: "The sociology of science has clearly established the presence of sex differences in scientific productivity and position. This article examines the processes leading to the lower productivity of female scientists at the completion of their doctoral training. Collaboration with the mentor is found to be the most important factor affecting productivity. For females, opportunities for collaboration are significantly decreased by having young children. As a consequence, the presence of young children has an adverse, indirect effect on the productivity of female scientists during graduate study. This effect does not exist for males. In addition to differences in the process of collaboration, many small differences that disadvantage women and advantage men are found in the levels of resources affecting productivity and in the mechanisms by which resources are translated into productivity. The concentration of small disadvantages provides a further explanation of sex differences in productivity at the start of the career. Since early advantages and disadvantages have been found to accumulate, this article provides an essential first step in understanding sex differences in scientific productivity and position that emerge during the career." Die Feministin als Wissenschaftlerin
Titelübersetzung:The feminist as scholar
Autor/in:
Freeman, Jo
Quelle: Feministische Wissenschaft und Frauenstudium: ein Reader mit Originaltexten zu Women's Studies. Renate Duelli-Klein (Hrsg.), Maresi Nerad (Hrsg.), Sigrid Metz-Göckel (Hrsg.). Hamburg (Blickpunkt Hochschuldidaktik), 1982, S. 280-296
(BG)
