Das Phänomen der so genannten 'Leaky Pipeline' wird anhand retrospektiv erhobener Bildungs- und Berufsverläufe von Promovierten der Abschlussjahrgänge 1996-2002 in der Deutschschweiz untersucht. Die Ergebnisse zeigen für Frauen eine geringere wissenschaftliche Produktivität und kleinere akademische Netzwerke als bei Männern. Sie sehen sich zudem strukturellen Barrieren im Wissenschaftssystem ausgesetzt. Dennoch verbleiben Frauen häufiger im Hochschulsektor und habilitieren gleich oft wie Männer. Mittels Übergangsratenmodellen kann gezeigt werden, dass es keine generellen geschlechtsspezifischen Unterschiede in den Chancen auf eine erfolgreiche wissenschaftliche Karriere gibt. Da Frauen inzwischen genauso häufig studieren wie Männer, könnten heute wahrgenommene Geschlechterungleichheiten ein Abbild der Vergangenheit darstellen. Für zukünftige Forschung bleibt offen, welche Rolle Frauenförderungsmaßnahmen zukommt und wie sich die für die Wissenschaftskarriere geltenden Ergebnisse auf weibliche Karrieremuster in der Privatwirtschaft übertragen lassen." Inhalt: "Which mechanisms lead to the fact, that the proportion of women in the academic career ladder is the smaller the further up the qualification and career to full professorship gets? This phenomenon, known as the 'leaky pipeline', is analysed with a unique retrospective dataset of PhDs who graduated between 1996 and 2002 at universities in the German speaking part of Switzerland. Results show women have a lower scientific productivity and smaller academic networks than men. Moreover, they suffer from structural barriers in the scientific system. However, women stay in the sector of higher education more often than men and habilitate as often as their male colleagues. Transition rate models show no gender differences in the chance of a successful academic career. Because meanwhile women start to study as often as men, today's picture of the leaky pipeline could be a result of gender inequalities of the past. Future research should examine the role of affirmative action for women in academia and how results from scientific careers can be transferred into the private labour market." (author's abstract)

Inhalt: "To examine how an author's gender influences his or her research output, the authors analyzed (not simply scored) more than 900 published articles in nine leading scientific journals in the field of evolutionary ecology. Women were strongly underrepresented in all countries, but this bias is decreasing. Men and women differed significantly in their fields of research, with women preferentially conducting projects on behavior rather than evolution or ecology. Most aspects of the structure of published articles and the level of conceptual generality were unaffected by an author's gender. Because discriminatory practices by reviewers and editors can be manifested in attributes of the articles that survive the review process, the latter result suggests a lack of gender-based discrimination during the review process. Gender differences in research output presumably reflect a complex array of genetic and social influences; a clearer understanding of these causal factors may help identify (and thus reduce) gender-based discrimination." "Peripheral and subversive" : women making connections and challenging the boundaries of the science community

Inhalt: "Researchers continue to report the underrepresentation of females in the science professions (AAUW, 1992; NSF, 1999; Vetter, 1992). Investigators have illuminated many factors that contribute to the insider status in the science community of some groups and the peripheral/outsider status of women and girls (Brickhouse, 1994; Delamont, 1989; Harding, 1991; Schiebinger, 1989). Some research has shown that supportive science networks have had a positive influence on women's participation and retention in science practices (AAUW, 1992; Keith & Keith, 1989; Kreinberg & Lewis, 1996; Varanka-Martin, 1996). In order to provide a better understanding of the role social capital plays in women's legitimate participation in science, I draw upon the findings of a qualitative study that examines the valued capital, ways, and practices of a support group for women working in the sciences at an academic research institution. Findings from this study indicate how women 1) were given little access to powerful networks in science that would provide them with opportunities to acquire the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to be legitimate in the traditional sense, and 2) encountered many obstacles in their attempts to develop networks and make such connections between themselves and other women. Findings also indicate that, despite these impediments, the support group provided a meaningful and resourceful network through which they developed a critical perspective of legitimacy as they sought to make explicit the culture of science. Participants not only employed the traditional methods of scientific inquiry, but also acknowledged and valued the voices and experiences of those from nondominant groups. They constructed a new discourse that was inclusive of diverse voices, created new career pathways, and developed a vision of mentoring that facilitated females' development of a critical view of the science community and their legitimate participation."
