Inhalt: "It has been reported that there is dramatic increase of female workers into manager level jobs during last few decades in the US labor market. Using Standard & Poor's Compustat ExecuComp database over 14 years (1992 - 2005), this paper examines whether the glass ceiling in the executive market has been substantially weakened measured by relative compensation by gender and female representation in the top rung of the executive market. Though the status of females in the executive market seems to have been improved, we cannot reject null hypothesis of no change when we test hypotheses whether the glass ceiling has significantly weakened. The results of the hypothesis tests suggest that there is still a long way ahead before gender equality is achieved and the glass ceiling is removed in the executive market." (author's abstract)
Mentoring and segregation: female-led firms and gender wage policies

Cardoso, Ana Rute; Winter-Ebmer, Rudolf
Quelle: Bonn (Discussion Paper / Forschungsinstitut zur Zukunft der Arbeit GmbH, No. 3210), 2007. 26 S.
Inhalt: "We explore the impact of mentoring of females and gender segregation on wages using a large longitudinal data set for Portugal. Female managers can protect and mentor female employees by paying them higher wages than male-led firms would do. We find that females can enjoy higher wages in female-led firms, the opposite being true for males. In both cases is a higher share of females reducing the wage level. These results are compatible with a theory where job promotion is an important factor of wage increases: if more females are to be mentored, less promotion slots are available for males, but also the expected chance of a female to be promoted is lower." Gender and career development : the case of Germany

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The purpose of this study is to gather information on several key aspects of gender and careers. First we seek information on current sectoral and occupational distributions across the member countries. We are interested in both horizontal and vertical segregation, including information on the extent of upward mobility of women in organisations and whether the 'glass ceiling' effect is still evident. Second we seek information on the qualifications held by men and women in employment. The Gender Perspectives Annual Update 2000 contains data from 1999 on the education level of the labour force and we would like to up-date this information and collect new data for the new EU countries. We also seek information on the amount of training provided by employers and the extent to which this differs depending upon part or full time employment. Finally, and importantly, we also seek information on the views, opinions, policies and actions of the social partners on issues to do with gender and careers." (author's abstract)
Women in managerial positions in Europe : focus on Germany
Titelübersetzung:Frauen in Führungspositionen in Europa : Schwerpunkt Deutschland
Autor/in:
Holst, Elke
Quelle: management revue : the international review of management studies, Vol. 17 (2006) No. 2, S. 122-142
(IAB)
Inhalt: "Prejudices and stereotypical beliefs about the role of women in society often limit their chances of reaching top leadership positions. This paper presents a detailed analysis of the socio-economic structure and the gender pay gap in managerial positions in Germany building an a review from a cross-national perspective of women's progress to high-ranking positions and of initiatives to overcome the 'glass ceiling'. Suggestions are made for improving the situation of women in order to permit more balanced gender participation in the economy, while also promoting national competitiveness and higher levels of wellbeing for the society." Bischoff, Sonja
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "For the fourth time since 1986 Hamburg professor Sonja Bischoff interviewed 1 000 men and 1 000 women in middle management in the German industry about their work situation, advancement, family situation and opinions. In her contribution she reports about the results that have turned out to be particularly stable since 1986 and those that signal conspicuous trends as well as those results that mark breaks in trends and that must be stated in comparison to 1998. According to the latest study (2004), for the first time on a percentage basis as many men as women are working in smaller companies as to sales and employees. This means that smaller and medium companies, in which women compared to men reached leadership positions more frequently than in larger companies, are conquered by men. And it applies what was always true: top earners are top workers - with the greatest number of work hours per week. Another surprising result: the top earners among men believe very often that their outside appearance played an important role in the acceleration of their move to the top." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
