(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "In 2002, a new federal law was enacted in Germany which changed the basic principles of professors' payments according to the so-called 'W-Besoldung'. After having been adapted by the Länder, the law has become effective in 2005. As the new payment structure is intended to be based on professors' performances rather than on a combination of their age and their previous academic careers, it is more open than the previous one and leaves a large margin. Salaries can be higher or lower than they used to be. Experiences have shown so far that the new scheme tends to provide lower incomes for professors and that there is a variety of legal and actual problems which are described in this article."
