Inhalt: In many undeveloped Mediterranean countries with few occupational possibilities, international migration from late 1960's become a matter of government policy, frequently through bilateral agreements for guest workers. Initially part of these agreements were only men, who migrated toward European counties as seasonal workers. This type of migration created attitudes among the Albanian population in Kosovo that international migrations are mainly for men. However, being in such places with high employment opportunities, profits and life standard, many of them decided to continue living in host countries, bringing thus their family members along. This move gave the to the Kosovar Albanian women opportunity to become part of host societies and possibility to Albanian population to understand that migration as a right which belong to both genders' equally.Initially, migrated women who joined their husbands came mainly from rural and low educated families and were personally and mentally unprepared for a new life in an alien environment. Even though their integration into host societies was challenge for them, we argue that migration has affected their status and family life, as well. By entering into a wage earning production process they become more independent and active in family decision processes, families became egalitarian, relations between family members became more open and their social networks were expanding. Additionally, recent female migrants are more open into integration processes. They are showing interest for involvement into labor market and educational processes, meaning that beside job, they tend to ensure the position at profession, as well. These criteria of emancipation we will prove by using ethnographic research technique, which implies the collection and analysis of detailed in-depth interviews (life stories) of Kosovan Albanian migrants in Germany and Switzerland. By women’s narratives, through which they express themselves, will draw a conclusion about integration strategies and way of living in host societies. While, the husbands and children’s narratives will be used to prove the changes in their family life.

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Professional wedding planning has been commonplace and big business in the United States, Japan and other countries for centuries. In German-speaking countries professional wedding planning is a relatively new service, thriving on the ongoing commercialization of weddings through TV shows, magazines, events like balls for bridal couples, brides' nights for the promotion of wedding dresses and accessories, and wedding fairs. Based on ethnographic fieldwork on the wedding industry and professional wedding planning in Austria, this article investigates the influence of wedding planners on the stabilization or reorganization of gender norms, roles and the gender-specific division of home making."
Titelübersetzung:On the meaning of marriage when only few marry: transformations of marriage and consumption practices in Namibia

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "As anthropological research from the first half of the twentieth century indicates, in pre-colonial Africa marriage was a universal and widespread rite of transition that structured all areas of life. For several decades now, however, marriage rates have been declining in various African regions. Based on an ethnographic case study from rural Namibia, this article scrutinizes the meaning of marriage when only few marry. Although marriage rates have dropped sharply, the value of weddings and marriages has not. Quite the opposite: because of the contemporary exclusivity of weddings, resulting from appropriations of local and global consumption goods, the value of marriage has increased. This also explains why many unmarried women and men endure years of waiting for marriage." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: 'The article explores the influence of changed concepts of sexuality on the family system. The key question focuses on alterations of implicit foundations of the family definition. More specifically, these are: heterosexual orientation, lifelong monogamy, the sexual relationship between the parents, and the joint household community and biological kinship with the children. Recent family-sociological trends in the Anglo-American countries show that empirical studies increasingly indicate the following conclusion: the conventional family definition addresses the social practice, i.e. the concrete everyday life of families, only insufficiently. The article reveals that changes in the evaluation of sexuality impact the daily routine of families and, in addition, imply also legal consequences.' (author's abstract)|
Aber bitte mit Schlag! Zur Legitimation von Lust, Macht und Gewalt in der SM-Szene
Titelübersetzung:But please whipped! On the justification of lust, power and violence in the SM scene
Autor/in:
Schwarz, Claudia; Röthling, Florian; Plaschg, Wolfgang
Quelle: SWS-Rundschau, 48 (2008) 3, S 264-284
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: 'Sadomasochism (SM) is being regarded as a perversion because of a pathologisation by sexual science. Since the 1960s, however, SM has been increasingly thematised in the arts and media, and beginning with the 1980s a visible SM scene developed. Therefore, it can be assumed that SM established itself in the public awareness and represents - at least to some extent - not a taboo anymore. In parallel to a private practice of SM, exists nowadays an informal SM scene, with SM as an element of communitarisation. Yet, the relationship between the SM scene and society as a whole has not really improved, as is being demonstrated by the central theme of SM scene: the ritualised connection of lust, power and violence. Various justification processes are necessary to deal with this problematic link. The article refers to these circumstances as a starting point and is based on empirical data collected during a three-month period of ethnographic observations at SM parties in Vienna. The analysis demonstrates that symbols, language codes, role structures and rituals are used to construct new systems of order that allow to connote SM practices positively and as 'game', to free interactions from risk, and to re-interpret sexual norms.' "Blood tests with the eyes": negotiating conjugal relations during the HIV/AIDS crisis in rural Namibia

Inhalt: Research from different parts of Africa indicates that to grasp the HIV/AIDS catastrophe, an in-depth understanding of conjugal relationships is crucial. In casual, short-term sexual interactions, safer sex practices, foremost condom use, have become more and more prevalent. This does not hold true for long-term relationships. Marriage rates have substantially declined in many parts of southern Africa. Without marriage as a possible frame for conjugal relations meanings and practices of 'love' have become the structuring concept of conjugality. Love relations are perceived as based on trust. This contradicts the use of condoms, a visible sign of mistrust. Based on long-term ethnographic field research in rural northwest Namibia we analyse the interconnections between conjugal relations, perceptions of risk and practices of safe sex in detail.
