Inhalt: This document presents the Deliverable Descriptive Analysis Report (D.4.5 internal)1 of the MOVE Project Survey (Work Package 4) that has received funding from the Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme of the European Union under Grant Agreement No.649263. All the descriptive analysis committed in the Grant Agreement have been performed and shared with all partners in the internal intranet Project Angel due to its size and format. This document presents simpli ed more manageable and visual version that was shared amongst partners who were asked to contribute with speci c country analysis or explanations. The central aim of MOVE is to provide evidence-based knowledge on mobility of young people in Europe as a prerequisite to improve mobility conditions, and to identify fostering and hindering factors of "beneficial" mobility. This aim is pursued using a multilevel interdisciplinary research approach, aiming at a comprehensive and systematic analysis of the mobility of young people in Europe.

Titelübersetzung:Compressed or de-standardised? Steps into independence of women and men in young adulthood
Autor/in:
Berngruber, Anne
Quelle: Diskurs Kindheits- und Jugendforschung / Discourse. Journal of Childhood and Adolescence Research, 11 (2016) 2, S 179-192
Inhalt: "From a life course perspective, steps towards financial, spatial and social independence mark the transition from youth to adulthood. As the achievement of higher educational certificates leads to a longer stay in school, the article addresses the question if there are educational differences in passing through the steps to adulthood. The empirical analysis is based on retrospective questions about transition markers of young men and women aged 18 to 32 years in the second wave of the survey AID:A of the German Youth Institute. Overall, timing, order and spacing of different transition markers indicate that young adults with a higher secondary school degree pass through those transition markers in a more compressed time frame than those with a lower secondary school degree and that men fulfill the particular steps more independently than women."
Titelübersetzung:"Scratches" and other skin signs among boys and young men: a plea for an extension of the discourse concerning social science readings

Friebel, Harry
Quelle: Diskurs Kindheits- und Jugendforschung / Discourse. Journal of Childhood and Adolescence Research, 7 (2012) 3, S 357-361
Gendered Negotiations: Engagements with 'Modernity' and Identity Change amongst Chiapeneco Youth in Mexico
Autor/in:
Ruse, Jamie-Leigh
Quelle: Studies of Transition States and Societies, 3 (2011) 2, S 26-41
Inhalt: "In this paper I wish to examine how changes have occurred in the processes of gendered identity construction amongst Mexican youths through examining local experiences of global, and specifically Mexican, modernities. Based on f eldwork carried out amongst youths in the city of San Cristobal de las Casas, in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, my analysis addresses how youths plan for the future in the context of economic and political marginalisation, and how this affects the way in which they pursue different forms of romantic relationships. I also address changes that have occurred in youths’ understandings, perceptions and performances of their gendered identities in the context of a highly developed local tourist industry, the advent of mass media, and new online social worlds. My study shows how gendered identity construction amongst youths here becomes context-dependent, and how it encompasses individual agency whilst at the same time being negotiated through wider structural and social limitations. I also wish to demonstrate how changing gendered identities amongst youths are constantly constructed and renegotiated by individuals seeking to accommodate notions of modernity with perceptions of the traditional, and how these individuals balance contesting notions of gendered identities within themselves. This is, therefore, a study of local and gendered identity change amongst youths in the context of localised modernities and rapid social change." (author's abstract)
Titelübersetzung:The female side of violence: young female Russian in the street culture
Autor/in:
Zdun, Steffen
Quelle: Soziale Probleme, 18 (2007) 1, S 42-65
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: 'This paper addresses on the role of young Russian-German women in the milieu of the street culture. Based on the results of the Ph.D. thesis 'Processes, functions and prevention of violence. A sociological analysis of the behaviour of Russian-German cliques' and on further data findings about the conflict attitudes and behaviour of the women are presented. The author shows that they are expected to act passive in conflicts, that they occur in certain ways as victims and as offenders of violence and that their role as a mother gives them an important influence on keeping the rules of the street culture alive. Thus, prevention is needed that addresses on these problems, especially, because there are signs that the street culture may spread in our society. On one hand, we have to care about the existing structures of that milieu; on the other hand, we have to deal with recent developments of our society that may increase violence - even of women.' Wandel der Einstellungen junger Menschen zur Demokratie in West- und Ostdeutschland: Ideal, Zufriedenheit, Kritik
Titelübersetzung:Change of attitudes towards democracy of youth in Western and Eastern Germany: ideal, satisfaction, critique

Rijke, Johann de; Gaiser, Wolfgang; Gille, Martina; Sardei-Biermann, Sabine
Quelle: Diskurs Kindheits- und Jugendforschung / Discourse. Journal of Childhood and Adolescence Research, 1 (2006) 3, S 333-351
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: 'Combining attitudes towards the ideal of democracy, evaluations of the reality of democracy and political interest a typology of four different groups was developed: satisfied, critical-political, critical-unpolitical and detached democrats. Using the data of the three waves (1992, 1997, 2003) of the 'Youth Survey' of the German Youth Institute (DJI) objective and subjective factors of influence were analysed as well as consequences for political trust and participation. The results show that the group of satisfied democrats is nearly double the size in Western Germany in comparison to Eastern Germany. In Eastern Germany, the increase in dissatisfaction with democracy in unified Germany leads to an increase in detachment, in Western Germany to a rise of critical-unpolitical attitudes. Low level of education, feeling disprivileged and socially insecure leads to detached attitudes towards democracy and political participation.' (author's abstract)|

On the sociogenesis of US dating regime and its present-day social legacy
Autor/in:
Wouters, Cas
Quelle: Deutsche Gesellschaft für Soziologie (DGS); Rehberg, Karl-Siegbert; Kongress der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Soziologie "Soziale Ungleichheit - kulturelle Unterschiede"; Frankfurt am Main, 2006. S 4614-4623
Inhalt: "Part of the study of twentieth-century changes in German, American, English and Dutch manners books focuses on developments in courting and dating. It shows that in all these countries, around the turn of the nineteenth to the twentieth century, young people started to 'date', that is, to go out together, both with and without a chaperone. From the 1920s onward, however, advice on dating, necking and petting, the 'line', the stag line, cutting in, and getting stuck appears in American manners books only. The US dating regime that emerged signified the escape of young people from under parental wings and the formation of a relatively autonomous courting regime of their own, leading to a head start in the emancipation of sexuality and to the rise of the first western youth culture, which was restricted to the USA. This emancipation of young people in the USA made young women less dependent upon their parents, but in regard to their relationship to young men, the dating regime kept women rather dependent upon men and their 'treats'. The then prevalent uneven balance of power between the sexes was institutionalized in an attitude that linked 'petting and paying'. Necking and petting as inherent possibilities made dating highly sexually oriented, but also sexually restrained, as the sexual exploration was to remain without sexual consummation. In that sense, the youth-culture dating code was oriented toward sex and marriage, maintaining the adult-code of abstinence of sex before and outside marriage. The responsibility for sufficiently restrained sexual emotion management was put in the hands of women. This double standard demanded that women developed increasing subtlety in the art of being both naughty and nice, of steering between yielding and rigidity, prudery and coquetry: a highly controlled indulgence of sexual impulses and emotions. This paper focuses on the present-daysocial legacy of the dating regime, which seems to consist of such characteristics as a highly commercialized sex, a fascination with breasts and blow jobs, and two pronounced double standards, one being the continued co-existence of a youth code allowing for sex and an adult code tending to demand abstinence of sex before and outside marriage, with the construction of 'technical virginity' as a bridge between the two. The other double standard consists of dating manners and office manners, the latter tending to demand abstinence of sexual references and allusions in the domain of work. This paper argues that the formalization of male dominance in the dating regimehelps explain why the female emancipation movements that followed the youth culture of the 1960s - a western international one - met with tougher resistance in the USA than in Europe: the reputedly advanced greater freedom of women in America seems to have turned into a deficit." What leads young people to identify Europe? An exploration of 'exposure' to Europe and resources for identification among young Europeans
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: 'The paper explores the resources and experiences which allow young people to develop their identification with Europe. We take into consideration mobility experience, migration experience and knowledge of foreign European languages as factors of 'exposure' to Europe and the everyday face-to-face discussion of political and social issues as well as learning about the EU at school as aspects of cognitive mobilization towards Europe. Empirical evidence shows that 'exposure' to Europe and cognitive mobilization towards Europe are important prerequisites for identification with Europe. Therefore identification with Europe cannot be treated separately from the resources that may induce the process of identification. As these resources are unequally distributed, the paper points to the importance of concepts of social inequality in understanding identification with Europe. The paper draws upon sample surveys of young people between 18 and 24 carried out in 10 European regions: Bilbao, Madrid, Edinburgh, Manchester, Chemnitz, Bielefeld, Prague, Bratislava, Vorarlberg and Vienna (N=3890) in the course of the multi-national research project 'Orientations of young men and women to citizenship and European identity', funded by the European Commission within its 5th Frame work Programme.'

Autor/in:
Holzer, Alexandra
