Autor/in:

Quelle: WZB-Mitteilungen, (2011) 132, S 15-17
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "When having to decide whether to enter an individual tournament or to stay out, men are more likely than women to go for the competitive option. This however is not the case when the competition is team-based. In team-based competitions, men are more prone to shy away from competition as they do not want to let a less competent team mate take advantage of them." (author's abstract)
Reaching across the Mekong: local socioeconomic and gender effects of Lao-Thai crossborder linkages

Inhalt: Following trade agreements between ASEAN states, the expansion of cross-border roads and bridges between Laos and Thailand has linked local communities and distant markets in increasingly diverse ways. Although the planned impacts of such integration are expected to be beneficial, effects on the ground vary, as witnessed at a sleepy outpost in Xayabury and a more vibrant crossing in Savannakhet. This paper discusses first the physical setting of such border facilities, and then explores their actual local effects on traders’ activities, highlighting changes in gender roles and perceptions of entrepreneurial competition participated in by women in the two research sites.

Scheible, Jana Anne; Fleischmann, Fenella
Inhalt: Departing from the debate about the influence of religiosity in general, and Islamic religiosity in particular, on gender role values, this contribution examines the association between religiosity and gender role values among men and women of the Turkish and Moroccan second generation in Belgium. Firstly, a theoretical model of Islamic religiosity was derived, consisting of religious identification, (partly gender specific) religious practices and orthodox beliefs. Subsequently, equivalence of this theoretical model across genders and across two ethnic groups was tested drawing on survey data from the Belgian TIES-project (The Integration of the European Second generation). In a second step, the association between Islamic religiosity and gender role values was analysed and again it was examined whether there are gender and ethnic differences in this association. Taking a host of control variables into account (age, education, employment status, marital status and religious socialisation), the analysis revealed no significant ethnic differences. More importantly, only weak negative correlations between Islamic religiosity and more egalitarian gender values were found; moreover, this association was somewhat stronger for men than for women. These results contradict the hypothesis that higher levels of Islamic religiosity necessarily go together with more traditional and less egalitarian gender role values. Further, they highlight the importance of taking gender differences into account when analysing religiosity among Muslim minorities in Europe.

Titelübersetzung:How "open" are the European sciences for women?
Autor/in:
Inhalt: Gender inequality in sciences is an ongoing unsolved issue. Many studies have
been carried out to tackle the gender specific problems in scientific communication
and scientific careers. The EU-Statistics ("She Figures") document the still
dominant pattern of lower female presence in higher academic ranks in almost
all European Union member states. There are discrepancies between EU science
policy and national social policies. The prevailing "publish or perish" attitude,
atypical employment as accepted norm and the forced international mobility are
factors which hamper the young and female academics' scientific careers. How
open for women are the so called "open initiatives"? Women are sceptical towards
FLOSS (free/ libre open source software), they feel intimidated by the male dominated
"chilly" working climate. Only 13 percent of the international Wikipedia
writers are female. Only articles on traditionally male topics as soccer are considered as relevant in the German Wikipedia and are allowed to "survive". There is
almost no open access publishing in German gender studies. Generally the surveys
of attitudes and practices of scholars on open access publishing ignore the gender
variable. The only exception is a larger survey of the DFG. In this study women
more often than men wish more training in open access publishing techniques.

Inhalt: "The paper is part of a larger investigation which analyses the potentials of open access publishing in order to increase the publication and therefore career opportunities for female
social scientists. It compares three thematically and methodologically similar social sciences journals: the open-access journal 'Forum Qualitative Social Research' (FQS) and the two Closed-Access-/ Hybrid journals 'Zeitschrift für qualitative Forschung' (ZQF) and 'Sozialer Sinn' (SoSi). The data was collected on the percentage of female editorial and advisory board members of these three journals (N=184 total). An extensive reconstruction and analysis was carried out to mark the gender structure of the authorship of the three journals 2000-2008 published articles (N=1557 total)." (author's abstract)

NGOs in India: the challenges of women's empowerment and accountability
Autor/in:
Kilby, Patrick
Quelle: London (Routledge Contemporary South Asia Series), 2011. XII,148 S
Inhalt: By examining how NGOs operate in Southern India in the early 2000's, this book discusses the challenges faced by small, local NGOs in the uncertain times of changing aid dynamics. The key findings focus on what empowerment means for Indian women, and how NGO accountability to these groups is an important part of the empowerment being realised. The notion of community empowerment, in which the 'solidarity' of a group can be a path to individual empowerment, is discussed, as well as analysing how empowerment can be a useful concept in development. Based on case studies of 15 NGOs as well as in-depth interviews with 80 women's self-help groups, the book highlights the key features of effective empowerment programs. The author uses innovative statistical analysis tools to show how a key factor in empowerment of marginalised women is the accountability relationship between themselves and the supporting NGO. The book goes on to discuss the ways that NGOs can work with communities in the future, and recognises the limitations of a donor-centric accountability framework. It provides a useful contribution to studies on South Asia as well as Gender and Development Studies. Contents: Introduction; 1. Non-Governmental Organisations in India; 2. The work of NGOs in India - SHGs and Women's Empowerment; 3. Rural NGOs; 4. Pune Waste-picker program; 5. Measuring Women's Empowerment; 6. NGO Accountability; 7. Conclusion.

On the changing correlation between fertility and female employment over space and time: a pooled time-series analysis on the impact of social indicators

Inhalt: "In OECD countries, the cross-country correlation between the total fertility rate and the female labour force participation rate turned from a negative value before the 1980s to a positive value thereafter. Based on pooled time-series analysis, the literature seems to agree that this change is due to unmeasured country and time heterogeneity with respect to female employment. However, the determinants of this heterogeneity remain unclear. Using data of 16 European countries from 1960-2005, the author estimates pooled time-series models of fertility and female labor force participation by applying Prais-Winsten regressions with fixed country and time effects and investigate the changing effect of female labor participation for a set of labor market, educational and demographic variables and indicators of social policy. The empirical findings reveal that the change in the correlation seems to be due to the increasing proportion of females employed part-time, increasing educational attainment of females, increasing age at first birth and increasing gross enrollment ratio of children in pre-primary education." Feminist perspectives on motherhood and reproduction
Titelübersetzung:Feministische Perspektiven zu Mutterschaft und Reproduktion
Autor/in:
Neyer, Gerda; Bernardi, Laura
Quelle: Historical Social Research, 36 (2011) 2, S 162-176
Inhalt: "Motherhood and reproduction have been at the core of the feminist discourse about women's rights ever since its onset. For the first and second feminist movements, the right to abortion and the public recognition of motherhood have been main issues in the discourse on reproduction. Since the last two decades of the 20th century, the potentials of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) have opened up new venues of feminist discourse. In this paper the authors sketch the main feminist lines of argumentation regarding motherhood and reproduction since the 1970s, and they identify specific shifts in their recurrent issues. They argue that an essential contribution of feminism to the understanding of motherhood as a structuring category has been its insistence on the distinction between biological and social motherhood. Feminist discourse shows how ART has further decomposed biological motherhood and has altered the meaning of motherhood and reproduction. Feminist analysis maintains that despite the rhetoric of choice surrounding ART, these technologies have not increased women's reproductive freedom. The decomposition of biological motherhood, the medical, legal, and commercial development of reproduction, and the change in the social perception of motherhood have rather established new forms of control over female reproduction."
