Inhalt: In this article, we draw a parallel between equality of opportunity in educational transitions and equality of opportunity in academic careers. In both cases, many methodological problems can be ameliorated by the use of longitudinal rather than cross-sectional data. We illustrate this point by using Finnish full-population register data to follow the educational and academic careers of the 1964-1966 birth cohorts from birth to the present day. We show how the Finnish professoriate is highly selected both in terms of parental background and in terms of gender. Individuals of different backgrounds differ greatly in the likelihood of completing different educational and academic transitions, but much less in the age at which they make these transitions. By contrast, women’s academic careers differ from those of men both in terms of timing and in terms of rates, with women’s PhDs and full professorships seemingly delayed compared to those of men. We additionally show with the help of a 2015 cross-section of Finnish professors how such differences are easily overlooked in cross-sectional data.

What matters? - Natur, Technologie und Geschlecht im Diskurs der Präimplantationsdiagnostik
Titelübersetzung:What matters? - Nature, technology and gender in the discourse on preimplantation genetic diagnosis

Inhalt: New reproductive technologies have changed our understanding of pregnancy and reproduction. In vitro fertilization, preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) and surrogate motherhood have created new forms of family and parenthood. As a result, reproduction is no longer solely regarded as a natural process, and the dualism of nature and technology is becoming fragile. But what kind of nature do we have instead, and what does it mean for gender boundaries? The article outlines the results of a discourse analysis of the debate around PGD in Germany. It shows how PGD is changing from a selective technology into an almost therapeutic procedure and how this change is intertwined with women’s and couples’ desire to have a healthy child. It also raises the issue of how the debate can be described from a hybrid perspective of nature and society. It is argued that the discursive shifts can be understood as a result of a “strategic naturalization” (Thompson) and "the work of purification" (Latour).

Minority scholars and insider-outsider researcher status: challenges along a personal, professional and political continuum

Inhalt: In this article, I examine some of the methodological issues present for minority scholars when conducting research with an "insider-outsider" researcher status. Utilising examples from my fieldwork, I will expose how social class, care and gender identity along with positioning have impact on the research process and analysis. Based on a study that sought to collaboratively produce knowledge about how inequality is lived and challenged, I was able to gain access and build rapport with participants with my insider working class background. With my outsider positioning as a "researcher" and "academic", I encountered more nuanced relations in the research process, showing how one can also be an insider-outsider simultaneously. My additional identity and positioning as a woman and mother became influential factors to the collaborative analysis of the findings, from which I gathered new knowledge about the intersection of class and care. In placing my identity and positioning, in terms of class, care and gender, at the centre of this discussion of methodology, I raise important questions on a personal, professional and political continuum for qualitative research and the production of collaborative knowledge and action within the field of participatory research.
Jahrhundert
Titelübersetzung:Designing digitalization - what we can learn from cyberfeminism: strategies and approaches of an activating perspective on information and communication technology in the 21st century
Inhalt: The article discusses whether the critical feminist approaches and strategies of cyberfeminism can be put to good use in the context of current debates in the field of education which are characterized by digitalization and heterogeneity/diversity. Cyberfeminism is first defined as a historical movement which, in all its diversity, is placed in the contexts of poststructuralist and artistic explorations of body and gender. Theories and perspectives of cyberfeminism are presented based on key texts and are supplemented by concrete examples. Extending from current projects which aim to strengthen women’s technical/media skills in the sense of self-empowerment, a link is created to institutional offers which aim to increase women’s interest in MINT subjects (Mathematics, Information Technology, Natural Sciences and Technology) and to improve women’s career opportunities in these fields. Finally, the deconstructive nature of cyberfeminism is emphasized and the authors suggest regarding digitalization as a heterogeneous social field which is open to new practices and formats of discourse.
Open-source cyborgs and DIY data: chances and challenges for a democratisation of gender

Autor/in:
Christensen, Michelle; Conradi, Florian
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article draws a picture of the ontological politics that is currently at play in the relationship between people and things from the perspective of 'what we design designs us back'. Drawing on an array of phenomena, we illustrate how the current discourse on the design of technologies produces objects-as-subjects and subjects-as-objects, and we explore the implicit production of gendered dualisms within this process. The article goes on to discuss whether and how the DIY disruption of mundane technological systems can interrupt this active production of tacit gendering. Illustrated by design experiments involving 'hacking culture' as technically intelligible social disruptions of everyday systems, the article then discusses the option of 'confusing the apparatus'. It is argued that the sharing and analysis of data should not be seen as something objective and automated, but rather as something subjective and manipulable. Finally, we argue the potential of our evolution into open-source cyborgs - and hence, the prospective of taking an active part in the designing of one's own body and mind through a constant DIY reshuffling and reinterpretation of the material-social." "Hate Speech" und Verletzbarkeit im digitalen Zeitalter: Phänomene mediatisierter Missachtung aus Perspektive der Gender Media Studies
Autor/in:
Eickelmann, Jennifer
Quelle: Bielefeld (Edition Medienwissenschaft, 46), 2017. 329 S

Studying tensions between imaginary spaces and concrete places: the method of paired biographies applied to scientists' laboratory lives
Autor/in:
Mallard, Gregoire
Quelle: Historical Social Research, 39 (2014) 2, S 115-136
Inhalt: Spaces and places are at the center of the science studies scholarship. Some scholars focus on the spatial circulation of written traces; others focus on the socio-cultural hierarchies reflected in the spatial organization of the laboratories. But most privilege single-case studies as their research method. While single-case studies offer the advantage of providing rich and detailed ethnographic description of spaces, they often fail to explain how imaginary spaces of science are turned into concrete social settings, often with unexpected deviations from their creators’ initial purposes. This paper argues that a comparative approach, which I call “paired biographies,” can help us study the tensions between imaginary and real spaces of science. This method of paired biographies is applied here to trace the attempts (both failed and successful) by two prominent physicists (J.R. Oppenheimer and E.O. Lawrence) to turn their imaginary scientific spaces into concrete places. This comparative approach, based upon paired biographies of various laboratory lives taken at different points in time, highlights the tensions between imaginary spaces of science and concrete architectural forms (themselves located in broader environments), and shows which unexpected outcomes derive from these tensions.
