(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The fertility of women of Turkish origin significantly differs from German women’s fertility. Thus, the basic question is which factors may lead to the fact that the former’s fertility behavior starts to converge to that of women without migration background. Based on comparative analyses of the German Microcensus 2012, this article presents findings with regard to the number of children born to a) women with a Turkish migration background and b) women without migration background, both belonging to the same age group that was born between 1963 and 1977. The analyses take into account: a) having migration experience of one’s own, b) duration of living in Germany, c) educational attainment, d) employment status, and e) partnership status. The results indicate that a differentiation with regard to both migration experience and duration of living in Germany, interacting with the level of education, is essential. Highly educated women with Turkish roots born in Germany display a parity that is similar to the parity of equally highly educated women not having a migration background. When comparing women of the subgroups who have lower levels of education in common, the differences in fertility do persist." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article initially looks for specific fertility patterns in Germany based on data from the 2012 Microcensus taking the characteristics ‘family status’, ‘education’ and ‘west/east differences’ into account. In particular, the analyses focus on the manifestations of childless couples and large families, revealing that these attributes differentiate the average numbers of children and the parity distributions to a large extent. For example, married persons and those with lower educational levels have far more children. When the attributes are combined, the contrasts intensify. Married women without vocational training had 2.11 children on average. By contrast, women who live without a partner in their household and have a university degree had only 0.67 children (birth cohorts 1964-1968). Because of its high case numbers, the Microcensus provides exact findings about the characteristics of childless couples and large families, but there are no data available that reveal individual attitudes. Therefore, in a second step we analysed additional determinants of childless couples and large families, concentrating on attitudes measured on the basis of the survey on family-related leitbilder conducted by the German Federal Institute for Population Research in 2012. With the differentiations found in the Microcensus serving as starting point, we were able to confirm the correlation of marriage and relationship status as well as education with childlessness or forming a large family, respectively. The analyses based on familyrelated leitbilder show that these are closely related to fertility behaviour. In Germany, typical leitbilder have evolved that encourage childlessness, while at the same time restrain the formation of large families. On the one hand, childlessness is generally accepted by the public at large and has become more attractive (i.e. it is said that childless couples are able to afford more and live a more self-determined life). On the other hand, large families are sometimes perceived as being anti-social. This is closely related to the notion of responsible and accountable parenthood. People assume that parents with many children cannot provide sufficient care for the individual child. Particularly the highly educated respondents assume that a social stigma exists for large families. There are no marked differences between eastern and western Germany." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Childlessness is a widespread phenomenon in Germany. Previous studies show considerable variation in different population groups; the interaction of different factors is, however, largely unexplored. This article aims to fill this research gap by both dendrogram analyses and by estimating logistic regression analyses for women in the cohorts 1950-1969 based on Microcensus data from 2012. Multivariate results reveal that an urban place of residence, high education, no migration background, no marriage, and full-time employment largely increase the probability of childlessness. These factors cumulatively interact with each other, while the effects of pecuniary variables rather decrease. Three group-specific differentiations are remarkable: The low childlessness rate of women with low education is predominantly based on the effect of migrants. The effect of urbanisation does not apply to women with a migration background. The trend of increasing childlessness among highly educated women has stopped - at a high level: The childlessness rate of highly educated women without migration background in western German cities amounts to 38%, with a full time occupation it even rises to 51%. For western Germany, this paper shows an increasing polarisation between motherhood and career: For many women, motherhood is accompanied by a permanently reduced participation in the labour market. Conversely, the growing new opportunities regarding occupation, relationships and leisure often end in permanent childlessness." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Due to a large number of cases (688.931 persons in 2012) the German Microcensus has a huge potential for analyses in demography and family sociology. Content is further improved by the new voluntary question on biological children of women. This paper aims to systematically assess the methodological background as well as limitations and potentials of the Microcensus using the example of fertility data. The analyses of nonresponse show that the way of questioning has a strong impact. The related bias could, however, be reduced by imputations. The main limitations are the cross-sectional design and missing data on the children of men and internal migration. The potential of the high case numbers of the Microcensus is systematically discussed by analyzing confidence intervals: It allows for in-dept differentiations for analyzing social structure, birth parities and time patterns. Finally, we discuss three research designs which are able to use this potential: Dendrogram analyses allow group differentiations for up to five levels and thus reveal detailed patterns of childlessness. Parity patterns by cohorts illustrate differences by occupational education. Third, the age-specific analyses of first births among several cohorts allow for identifying trends of recuperation which differ considerable between educational groups." (author's abstract)

Changes in the division of labor within highly educated German couples when the first child is born

hochgebildete Paare selbst geben.
Hausarbeit." (Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "When becoming parents for the first time, German
couples often adapt their division of paid and
unpaid work, creating a more gender-specific allocation. Using longitudinal data from the qualitative event-centered project 'Household division of domestic labor as a process', we compare theoretically-postulated mechanisms of change in the division of work within couples with explanations given by the couples interviewed themselves. Our qualitative analysis demonstrates that economic and gender norm theories are quite successful at predicting changes towards a more traditional specialization when couples become parents for the first time, while they are less helpful in explaining the persistence of equal arrangements in the domestic division of work, or the change towards more equal arrangements. The interviews also show that the explanations which differentiate - within unpaid work - between childcare and housework are a better predictor of the realities of the arrangements. Furthermore, the causal order of the decisions suggested by the theories differs from the couples' actual decision making processes: when facing the transition to parenthood, they decide first upon the division of childcare, and then of labor market activity and housework." (Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The Annual Conference of The Women's and Gender Research Network NRW addressed the topic of 'love', a subject which is traditionally assigned to the private sphere. However, the awareness of its political dimension is one of the fundamental paradigms of the New Women's Movement and of contemporary Gender Studies. Amongst other topics the talks shed light on the concepts of love discussed in the context of our current life-worlds, refl ections on love as a 'heteronormative institution', medieval depictions of leave-taking, discourses of the women's movement around 1900, female friendships in the context of the peaceful revolution in Germany in 1989, the new 'literature about fathers', as well as the relation between love and music in the 16th century. The keynote speaker was Eva Illouz. She raised the question of the impact of sexual liberation on women and men and its effects on romantic love. Many of the lectures given at the conference broadened the perspective on love beyond the traditional male-female couple." (author's abstract)

Inhalt: "Comparative research suggests that there are great cross-national and cross-temporal differences in living arrangements of young adults aged 18-34 in Europe. In this paper, we examine young adults' living arrangements (1) across several European countries and different national contexts, and (2) by taking into account cross-time variability. In doing so, we pay careful attention to a comprehensive conceptualisation of living arrangements (including extended and non-family living arrangements). The aim of this paper is to deepen our understanding of family structure and household arrangements in Europe by examining and mapping the cross-national and cross-temporal variety of young adults' living arrangements. For our analysis we use data from the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series International (IPUMSi) for the census rounds 1980, 1990, and 2000 for eight European countries (Austria, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Portugal, Romania, and Switzerland). We employ log-linear models to ascertain the influence of individual and contextual factors on living arrangements. The analyses lend further support to a North/West - South/East divide in living arrangements and general gender differentials in extended family living. Other interesting results are the heterogeneity in the living arrangements of single mothers across geographic areas, and the upward trend of extended household living for young men and women between 1980 and 2000." Influence of migration in women emancipation: case study from Kosovan Albanian diaspora
Autor/in:
Dushi, Mimoza
Quelle: International Letters of Social and Humanistic Sciences, (2015) 58, S 91-103
Inhalt: In many undeveloped Mediterranean countries with few occupational possibilities, international migration from late 1960's become a matter of government policy, frequently through bilateral agreements for guest workers. Initially part of these agreements were only men, who migrated toward European counties as seasonal workers. This type of migration created attitudes among the Albanian population in Kosovo that international migrations are mainly for men. However, being in such places with high employment opportunities, profits and life standard, many of them decided to continue living in host countries, bringing thus their family members along. This move gave the to the Kosovar Albanian women opportunity to become part of host societies and possibility to Albanian population to understand that migration as a right which belong to both genders' equally.Initially, migrated women who joined their husbands came mainly from rural and low educated families and were personally and mentally unprepared for a new life in an alien environment. Even though their integration into host societies was challenge for them, we argue that migration has affected their status and family life, as well. By entering into a wage earning production process they become more independent and active in family decision processes, families became egalitarian, relations between family members became more open and their social networks were expanding. Additionally, recent female migrants are more open into integration processes. They are showing interest for involvement into labor market and educational processes, meaning that beside job, they tend to ensure the position at profession, as well. These criteria of emancipation we will prove by using ethnographic research technique, which implies the collection and analysis of detailed in-depth interviews (life stories) of Kosovan Albanian migrants in Germany and Switzerland. By women’s narratives, through which they express themselves, will draw a conclusion about integration strategies and way of living in host societies. While, the husbands and children’s narratives will be used to prove the changes in their family life.

Inhalt: Although there is an emerging trend towards a transformation within familial gender relations in the course of which the model of egalitarian parenting is gradually prevailing, current research shows that young families often do not succeed in realizing this ideal in the long term. Gender relationships tend to retraditionalize when a couple's first child is born. Taking this scenario into account, this article shows from a praxeological perspective how these non-egalitarian divisions of labour persist despite egalitarian ideals. The thesis is that even before birth there are processes of parenting which the prospective parents and specialist antenatal and postnatal institutions take part in. Information evenings in hospitals and antenatal courses were analyzed. Based on ethnographic records the article demonstrates how these institutional practices create gender inequalities between parents.

(Autorenreferat)
