Inhalt: In this article, we draw a parallel between equality of opportunity in educational transitions and equality of opportunity in academic careers. In both cases, many methodological problems can be ameliorated by the use of longitudinal rather than cross-sectional data. We illustrate this point by using Finnish full-population register data to follow the educational and academic careers of the 1964-1966 birth cohorts from birth to the present day. We show how the Finnish professoriate is highly selected both in terms of parental background and in terms of gender. Individuals of different backgrounds differ greatly in the likelihood of completing different educational and academic transitions, but much less in the age at which they make these transitions. By contrast, women’s academic careers differ from those of men both in terms of timing and in terms of rates, with women’s PhDs and full professorships seemingly delayed compared to those of men. We additionally show with the help of a 2015 cross-section of Finnish professors how such differences are easily overlooked in cross-sectional data.

Inhalt: Die bisherige Promoviertenforschung deutet darauf hin, dass Frauen monetär weniger vom Erwerb eines Doktortitels profitieren als Männer. Daher werden im vorliegenden Beitrag erstmals das Ausmaß und die Ursachen geschlechtsbezogener Lohnunterschiede unter Promovierten in Deutschland untersucht. Es wird erwartet, dass sich promovierte Frauen und Männer hinsichtlich ihrer Studienfachwahl und Beschäftigungsmerkmale unterscheiden. Auf der Grundlage des DZHW-Absolventenpanels 2001 werden die Brutto-Stundenlöhne zehn Jahre nach Studienabschluss mittels OLS-Regression und Oaxaca-Blinder-Dekomposition untersucht. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Stundenlöhne von promovierten Frauen um 16,3 Prozent geringer sind als diejenigen von promovierten Männern. Diese Lohnunterschiede sind zu zwei Dritteln darauf zurückzuführen, dass promovierte Frauen häufiger Fächer mit einem hohen Frauenanteil studiert haben, nach ihrem Studium weniger Berufserfahrung sammeln und seltener Leitungspositionen innehaben als promovierte Männer.

Attracting women into male-dominated trades: Views of young women in Australia

Inhalt: Context: The persistent low female participation in male-dominated trades is not attracting a high level of public attention and policy action. There are determined, yet adhoc actions by advocates in response to evidence that economic benefits will be derived for industry and women through increased female participation in the male-dominated trades. Occupational segregation of the trades remains resistant to change.
Methods: To better understand the barriers limiting female participation in the male-dominated trades from the perspective of young women, this PhD study features interviews with female secondary students, complemented by interviews with industry stakeholders and a quantitative analysis of VET and trade participation data. The three primary research questions are: 1) What is the extent of gender segregation in vocational education and training (VET) and typically male-dominated trades in Australia, and how does this compare internationally? 2) Why do very few female students choose male-dominated trades as their job pathway? 3) What can be done, particularly in the education and training sectors, to increase female interest in, and take-up of, the male-dominated trades?
Findings: The results of this research showed that the composition of trade-qualified females in male-dominated trades is persistently low at 2-3%. The views of young women affirmed the evidence showing system-wide barriers limit female interest in these trades. Most influential is that gender stereotypes of work are set by Year 10 and that female enrolment in Maths (a pre-requisite for male-dominated careers) is low; these trades are seen as “jobs for the boys who don’t do academic,” and the fear of intimidation and harassment deters young women. Low enrolment of female students in male-dominated trade courses indicates that this entrenched occupational segregation of the trades will remain resistant to change for some time to come.
Conclusion: The findings indicate that ad hoc responses to overcome gender segregation of the trades is not effective. Influenced by systems theory and a social ecological model (SEM) of change, the researchers promote the need for sustained, nation-wide awareness and action involving VET and school sectors, industry, government and trade unions to attract more women into male-dominated trades.

Interfirm mobility of married women in the Indian IT sector: evidence from Delhi

Inhalt: Using retrospective work-family survey data and the event-history analysis technique, this paper explores the determinants of interfirm mobility i.e. the factors influencing the firm changing decisions of women in their early careers. In particular, it explores the extent to which family events, such as marriage and first childbirth, affect women's working duration in firms and, consequently, their decision to change jobs. Based on a sample of 295 married women, drawn from Information Technology-Information Technology Enabled Services (IT-ITES) firms in New Delhi and the National Capital Region, the findings show that, amongst individual-level characteristics, children significantly decline women’s interfirm mobility rates, but marriage does not. Amongst firm-level characteristics, lower levels of job position and promotion significantly increase interfirm mobility, whilst rotating shifts, the IT-ITES sector and good working conditions significantly decline interfirm mobility rates. The study does not find that women are less mobile. It, however, takes longer for mothers to change firms due to childcare responsibilities and the extensive searching is required to find a company with standard working hours. This study concludes that women advance their careers by maximizing both status and income rewards through interfirm mobility. The data, however, cannot demonstrate the exact rewards-gain women receive upon changing employers.

Im Rahmen des Forschungsverbundes ForGenderCare wurden im Teilprojekt 'Arbeitsbedingungen und Interessenvertretung von Pflegekräften in Bayern' leitfadengestützte Interviews mit Altenpflege- sowie mit Gesundheits- und Krankenpflegefachkräften geführt. Zentral waren hierbei die Fragen nach alltäglicher Bewältigung sowie begünstigenden und hemmenden Faktoren einer widerständigen Praxis und Kollektivierung in Abhängigkeit der unterschiedlichen Berufsgruppen. Der Beitrag beleuchtet die strukturellen Ungleichheiten hinsichtlich AkteurInnen und Institutionen im Arbeitsfeld Pflege und Gesundheit. Diese lassen sich anhand der familialistisch geprägten, kommodifizierten Daseinsfürsorge und Stärkung definitionsmächtiger Kosten- und Leistungsträger aufzeigen. Inhalt: "Considering the diverse social and welfare state transformation processes, questions about the conditions and possibilities of care work are becoming more and more important. The current conditions for the labor and profession of care workers point out structural factors of inequality. Furthermore, they clarify dynamics in the crises of the gender-specific division of labor. The two fields of work - elderly care and health care - are characterized by different framework conditions according to their institutions, related laws and the history of the professions. However, both fields of public welfare have become increasingly subject to the service economy. At the same time, the possibilities for involvement of the professional groups, for example in the legislative process, are marginal. Within the research group ForGenderCare, the subproject 'Working conditions and representation of interests of nurses in Bavaria' conducted guided interviews with nurses for the elderly, health workers and nurses. Essential were questions about coping with everyday problems and challenges as well as favoring and inhibiting factors of a contradictory practice and collectivization depending on the different professional groups. The paper examines the structural inequalities with regard to actors and institutions in the field of elderly care and health care. These can be identified by means of family-oriented, commoditized welfare and the strengthening of determining sponsors and funding agencies. Inhalt: Wir diskutieren die Frage, ob eine sogenannte "Feminisierung" bestehende "maskuline" Machtstrukturen in der Medizin herausfordert. Die Rede von der "Feminisierung der Medizin" setzt sowohl die "Maskulinität" voraus als auch deren Veränderung durch die Erhöhung des Frauenanteils. Wir stellen die Kontrastanalyse zweier Gruppendiskussionen aus der Längsschnittstudie Karriereverläufe und Karrierebrüche bei Ärztinnen und Ärzten während der fachärztlichen Weiterbildung (KarMed) vor; eine Diskussion mit angehenden Ärztinnen und eine mit angehenden Ärzten. Als manifestes Thema wurde Geschlechtlichkeit in beiden Diskussionen im diskursiven Kontext der sogenannten "Feminisierung" eingeführt - bezeichnenderweise im Kontrast zur gleichsam mythisch aufgeladenen Maskulinität der Chirurgie. Das Material unserer Gruppendiskussionen verweist auf eine nach wie vor maskuline Norm im Selbstverständnis der angehenden Ärztinnen und Ärzte. Die Männerrunde konstituierte sich als Gruppe der Ärzteschaft bei allen Differenzen wie selbstverständlich als männliche Norm. Die Frauengruppe konstituierte sich über eine geteilte Identifikation als "Frauen in der Medizin". Das Material wurde mit Methoden der psychoanalytischen Sozialforschung interpretiert und wird in diesem Beitrag im Hinblick auf die Begriffe der Feminisierung und der hegemonialen Männlichkeit diskutiert. Inhalt: In this contribution we discuss the question of whether the so-called "feminization" of medicine challenges persisting power structures in the field. The notion of the "feminization of medicine" implies both the "masculinity" of the field and its change due to the increasing number of female medical doctors. We present the comparative analysis of two group discussions from the longitudinal study "Career Paths and Career Breaks of Medical Doctors During Residency" (KarMed). One discussion was held with women, one discussion with men, all of whom had just completed their medical studies. In both discussions the theme of gender came up manifestly in the discursive context of the so-called "feminization of medicine". The discussants contrasted this "feminization" with the mythologically laden "masculinity" of surgery. The material of our group discussions indicates a persistent masculine norm in the perception of both female and male doctors. Despite all differences between their members, the group of men constituted itself as a group of medical doctors representing the masculine norm. The group of women constituted itself through shared identifications as "women in medicine". We analyzed the material with psychoanalytic methods in social research and we discuss our interpretations in relation to the notions of "feminization" and of "hegemonic masculinity". Since the beginnings of institutional childcare, looking after young children has been considered a task for women. Although Froebel's philosophy to enhance professionalization in the field of early childhood education and care was adopted by the bourgeois women's movement, it already failed one hundred years ago at the school conference of the German Reich. Since then various opportunities have been missed to strengthen the field of early childhood education and care and to systematically make it an integral part of the education system - including the most recent efforts which aimed to redefine and reestimate qualification requirements and tasks of staff working in early childhood education and care." The migration of qualified Lebanese women to France

Inhalt: Lebanon is defined as a country of emigration and immigration. Whereas previously, emigration was considered a male migration. Gradually, in recent years emigration has evolved and is becoming feminine also. Independent female migration is a growing phenomenon in the Lebanese society although men still play an important role in the migration project.In the past, women were emigrating most often in the context of family reunification, accompanying their husbands to join a member of their families. The majority of migrant women today are leaving the country for so many reasons (further education, work, etc.) and not only to join their husbands. This article examines highly skilled female migration from Lebanon. In France, the migration of skilled workers from Lebanon has experienced very rapid growth in the last decade. However, female migration does not seem to have been the subject of a sociological reading. The study includes qualitative analysis of twenty five cases studied of Lebanese skilled migrant women in France, especially a university degree or equivalent (nurses, architects, teachers, doctors, engineers, lawyers, researchers ...) who were not married or go join their family when they have emigrated, and they have a good command of French language, and who were not dual nationality holders. This article aims to fill some gaps in this area, examining the reasons for change: migration path, the link with the country of origin, the impact of female migration on their personal, social, cultural and family, their return project, exchanges on the remittances levels, career transition path and entrepreneurship, adaptations, their social networks, their identity reconstruction, etc. Besides, there are also non-measurable aspects noted as the autonomy of women to discuss.
Still a perfect model? The gender impact of vocational training in Germany

Inhalt: Reconstructing the parallel structure of ‘dual’ and ‘school-based’ vocational routes reveals the close connection between the German vocational training system and the segmentation of the labour market by gender. The example of jobs in childcare and pre-primary education shows that the legacy of semi-professionalism in these occupations is not just rooted in the nature of training and working conditions, but complexly interlinks with the prevalence of the male breadwinner model sustained by social policy regulations and the German taxation system. In France, by contrast, the central state takes responsibility for the provision of childcare from zero to six years of age to support female labour force participation and dual-earner couples. This has also fostered professionalisation in the respective occupations. Whilst this may not necessarily induce a degendering process at the level of horizontal segregation of vocational qualifications, it facilitates gender equality in terms of vertical mobility and the professional status of women.
