Inhalt: In this article I argue that translation in cross-cultural research leads to the construction of a certain linguistic hierarchy, wherein the English language subordinates the Romanian language. I illustrate my arguments with examples from 47 qualitative interviews with Scottish and Romanian fathers on the topic of love. To situate this argument, I describe how in my role as an Anglo-Romanian bilingual interpreter I inadvertently contributed to the creation of this hierarchy. This happened through translation as I was fitting Romanian into English to disseminate the meanings, values and emotions of Romanian fathers to a primarily English-speaking audience. At the same time by employing emotional reflexivity and focusing on gender matters in the context of shared responsibility of constructing knowledge, I resolved some linguistic tensions. Paradoxically, by carrying emotional meanings across into another language, there is the main positive consequence of moving the focus in research from the center to the margins, as it increases the visibility of a usually overlooked sample of people from a specific cultural background.

Inhalt: This article focuses on the heroines and firstperson narrators in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight saga and E. L. James's erotic retelling Fifty Shades of Grey. I undertake a comparison with what can be identified as the prototype for these heroines, namely Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre in the eponymous novel. I use the fact that Bella, Ana and Jane describe themselves as ordinary, unremarkable and plain as my point of departure. By locating their selfnarration within the context of the love story, its long-established plot structure and its politics of desire, I aim to show how their view is weighted and questioned, and how the heroines’ transformation into feminine and desirable women is effected in the text. This reading enables me to analyse and criticise the specific form of white heterosexual bourgeois femininity that is produced and reinforced by heteronormative love stories." (author's abstract)
Titelübersetzung:The worst kind of happiness: the fatal symbolic order of love and gender in contemporary drama
Autor/in:
Zimmermann, Andrea
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "In contemporary drama "love" is predominantly performed as (failing) mutual recognition. This article explores the symbolic order of romantic love, paying attention to its paradoxical potential to either constitute or hinder recognition with special regard to gender relations and their modes of being. Referring to feminist theories, the play of mimesis is presented as an alternative mode of inter-subjectivity that allows for love as a shared state of entanglement with an Other as well as for recognition of the otherness of the other." Das Narrativ "natürlicher" Mutterliebe und Mütterlichkeit in Literatur und Film
Titelübersetzung:The narrative of natural motherly love in literature and movies
Autor/in:
Schlicht, Corinna
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article demonstrates from a historical perspective and in terms of cultural studies research into emotions, which examines affects and feelings in terms of their forms of cultural representation and cultural conditions, how the narrative of motherly care has shaped the cultural understanding of women up to the present day. An analysis of one cinematic (Stephen Daldry's "The Hours") and one literary (Julia Franck's "Die Mittagsfrau") example puts the focus on two works which both adopt a double perspective, that of the mother as well as of the child. They belong to the group of texts which deal with a tabooed field in the femininity discourse, that is the perspective of those mothers who do not selflessly love their children. They are to be understood as critical reflections of biologistic presuppositions about apparently "natural" motherliness, which at the same time, within the culturally anchored binary system, implies the "unnaturalness" of masculine care. Moreover, they must be understood as calling into question the traditional family image in which fathers tend to be excluded from responsibility for a child's emotional well-being because that is narrated as a genuinely female task." Inhalt: One of the most radical and stylish fiction authors of the 20th century, Angela Carter, expresses her views of feminism through her various novels and fairy tales. Carter began experimenting with writing fairy tales in 1970, which coincided with the period of second wave feminism in the Unites States. The majority of Angela Carter's work revolve around a specific type of feminism, radical libertarian feminism and her critique of the patriarchal role that have been placed on women. In this article, the main concentrate is on heroine’s internalized consciousness which echoes in their behavior. All of the female protagonists in carter's short stories; such as The Company of Wolves, and Werewolf and mainly in Wolf-Alice have similar characteristics with different conditions, in which they are represented in a very negative light with less than ideal roles. In these stories, the protagonist is a young girl who has many conflicts with love and desire. Carter attempts to encourage women to do something about this degrading representation.
