Inhalt: In this article, we draw a parallel between equality of opportunity in educational transitions and equality of opportunity in academic careers. In both cases, many methodological problems can be ameliorated by the use of longitudinal rather than cross-sectional data. We illustrate this point by using Finnish full-population register data to follow the educational and academic careers of the 1964-1966 birth cohorts from birth to the present day. We show how the Finnish professoriate is highly selected both in terms of parental background and in terms of gender. Individuals of different backgrounds differ greatly in the likelihood of completing different educational and academic transitions, but much less in the age at which they make these transitions. By contrast, women’s academic careers differ from those of men both in terms of timing and in terms of rates, with women’s PhDs and full professorships seemingly delayed compared to those of men. We additionally show with the help of a 2015 cross-section of Finnish professors how such differences are easily overlooked in cross-sectional data.

Inhalt: "Promoting gender equality is smart development policy," says the World Bank. In line with this narrative, many companies have promoted gender equality in terms of bridging the gender digital divide. In Argentina, a growing number of grassroots initiatives sponsored by corporations have emerged and provide training in digital and soft skills as well as entrepreneurship and leadership opportunities. Without denying the efforts, importance, and value of the work of these groups, this paper studies some of the contradictions inherent to the increasing power that corporations have in the discourse and practice of reducing the gender digital gap. My argument is that these projects contribute to reinforcing current economic, social, and geographical divides, to discriminating against gender non-conforming people, and to further limiting government intervention in this area.

Inhalt: Recent years have witnessed a surge in research on the impact of the cyberspace on social movements. The feminist movement has built a vocal platform online which attempts to underscore sexual violence against women. Scholars have begun to suspect that the internet has ushered in a new wave, the fourth wave of feminism. The fourth wave’s main feature is its reliance on social media. The accessibility, reach of a widespread audience, low costs and user-friendly environment have encouraged women to use social media to speak out against various forms of sexual violence directed against women. It is also assumed that going forward; the movement will also tackle issues such as the gender pay gap, neoliberal policies, maternity leave, and cultural sexism. Moreover, the internet-based movement is striving to bring to the fore the topic of intersectionality, that is, the intersection of oppressive institutions, and the attempt to rectify the failings of past waves by representing those oppressed by multiple institutions such as sexism, classism, and racism. This commentary provides an overview of the emerging academic literature on the fourth wave of feminism and critically reflects the lack of social realism in its existing form of knowledge production.

What matters?

Inhalt: New reproductive technologies have changed our understanding of pregnancy and reproduction. In vitro fertilization, preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) and surrogate motherhood have created new forms of family and parenthood. As a result, reproduction is no longer solely regarded as a natural process, and the dualism of nature and technology is becoming fragile. But what kind of nature do we have instead, and what does it mean for gender boundaries? The article outlines the results of a discourse analysis of the debate around PGD in Germany. It shows how PGD is changing from a selective technology into an almost therapeutic procedure and how this change is intertwined with women’s and couples’ desire to have a healthy child. It also raises the issue of how the debate can be described from a hybrid perspective of nature and society. It is argued that the discursive shifts can be understood as a result of a “strategic naturalization” (Thompson) and "the work of purification" (Latour).

Doing the feminist intergenerational mic: methodological reflections on digital storytelling as process and praxis

Inhalt: In this article, we reflect on the methodology of a digital storytelling workshop held in May 2016, gathering activists and academics across four generations to share and record their activist histories. Drawing on observational notes and participant feedback, we investigate whether and how the workshop challenged knowledge-production conventions, ageist assumptions, and intergenerational scripts. We offer the concept of a feminist intergenerational mic, arguing that the norm-challenging possibilities of this methodology lay not in providing access to a mic, but rather in particular, routinized, feminist and intergenerational practices. Through this article, we contribute to conversations about feminist methodologies, power and vulnerability in research, participatory media creation, and aging studies.

Jahrhundert
Titelübersetzung:Designing digitalization - what we can learn from cyberfeminism: strategies and approaches of an activating perspective on information and communication technology in the 21st century
Inhalt: The article discusses whether the critical feminist approaches and strategies of cyberfeminism can be put to good use in the context of current debates in the field of education which are characterized by digitalization and heterogeneity/diversity. Cyberfeminism is first defined as a historical movement which, in all its diversity, is placed in the contexts of poststructuralist and artistic explorations of body and gender. Theories and perspectives of cyberfeminism are presented based on key texts and are supplemented by concrete examples. Extending from current projects which aim to strengthen women’s technical/media skills in the sense of self-empowerment, a link is created to institutional offers which aim to increase women’s interest in MINT subjects (Mathematics, Information Technology, Natural Sciences and Technology) and to improve women’s career opportunities in these fields. Finally, the deconstructive nature of cyberfeminism is emphasized and the authors suggest regarding digitalization as a heterogeneous social field which is open to new practices and formats of discourse.

Inhalt: Scientific collaborations shape ideas as well as innovations and are both the substrate for, and the outcome of, academic careers. Recent studies show that gender inequality is still present in many scientific practices ranging from hiring to peer-review processes and grant applications. In this work, we investigate gender-specific differences in collaboration patterns of more than one million computer scientists over the course of 47 years. We explore how these patterns change over years and career ages and how they impact scientific success. Our results highlight that successful male and female scientists reveal the same collaboration patterns: compared to scientists in the same career age, they tend to collaborate with more colleagues than other scientists, seek innovations as brokers and establish longer-lasting and more repetitive collaborations. However, women are on average less likely to adopt the collaboration patterns that are related with success, more likely to embed into ego networks devoid of structural holes, and they exhibit stronger gender homophily as well as a consistently higher dropout rate than men in all career ages.
Open-source cyborgs and DIY data: chances and challenges for a democratisation of gender

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article draws a picture of the ontological politics that is currently at play in the relationship between people and things from the perspective of 'what we design designs us back'. Drawing on an array of phenomena, we illustrate how the current discourse on the design of technologies produces objects-as-subjects and subjects-as-objects, and we explore the implicit production of gendered dualisms within this process. The article goes on to discuss whether and how the DIY disruption of mundane technological systems can interrupt this active production of tacit gendering. Illustrated by design experiments involving 'hacking culture' as technically intelligible social disruptions of everyday systems, the article then discusses the option of 'confusing the apparatus'. It is argued that the sharing and analysis of data should not be seen as something objective and automated, but rather as something subjective and manipulable. Finally, we argue the potential of our evolution into open-source cyborgs - and hence, the prospective of taking an active part in the designing of one's own body and mind through a constant DIY reshuffling and reinterpretation of the material-social."
