Inhalt: Recently, the necessity of preventive measures with respect to right-wing-extremism among girls and young women has attracted more public attention. But a concept comprising theories of the subjects involved as well as their social context and subsequent pedagogical strategies has not yet been brought forward. Gender, gays and gain: the sexualised politics of donor aid in Malawi
Titelübersetzung:Gender, Gays and Gain: Entwicklungshilfe für Malawi und die Rechte Homosexueller
Autor/in:
Chanika, Emmie; Lwanda, John L.; Muula, Adamson S.
Quelle: Africa Spectrum, 48 (2013) 1, S 89-105
Inhalt: Many Malawian politicians have exploited religious and cultural discourses, encouraging
the discourse of the “God-fearing Malawi nation” while also acknowledging the country
as a secular state. This discourse – which most recently underwent further development
in the early 1980s when Christians and Muslims, funded by donor money, accelerated
their evangelical drives in the context of a one-party Malawi – resonates with a patriarchal,
conservative political dispensation. This paper traces the evolution of the “God-fearing
nation” discourse in Malawian politics. It posits that the government used the “gay
rights issue” as a strategy to disorient human rights activists and donors. Gay rights
were de-linked from other civil rights, forcing a binary approach toward gay rights,
which were seen by government supporters as “anti-Christian”, “anti-Malawian” concepts.
The debate with donors enabled the government to claim “sovereign autonomy” and galvanise
the population into an anti-aid mentality (better no aid than aid that supports homosexuality).

The Electoral System and Women’s Political Representation in Romania
Autor/in:
Petrescu, Alexandra
Quelle: European Quarterly of Political Attitudes and Mentalities, 2 (2013) 2, S 1-8
Inhalt: Taking into account the influence of mentalities and attitudes on the construction of the political imaginary, the author is questioning the possibility if the parity or the quotas can become in the future a source of inspiration for the political representation of women in Romania. This essay analyses two francophone models, France and Belgium, where the quotas and parity are applied, and which represented during the last two centuries sources of inspiration for the electoral and constitutional framework of Romania.
Ecofeminist Ideology of Petra Kelly: The Challenges of Modern Political Thought
Autor/in:
Nadić, Darko
Quelle: European Quarterly of Political Attitudes and Mentalities, 2 (2013) 2, S 63-70
Inhalt: Petra Kelly (1947-1992) has remained recorded in history as one of the true icons of modern German and European environmental movement. Combining the ideas of feminism, peace, nonviolence, ecology (environmental protection) and social justice, she has managed to reconcile these seemingly opposing ideas and merge them into one specific type of ideology that was the guiding idea of the German Green Party until the mid-nineties of the last century. This is not the case of an eclectic kind of ideology, the simple merging of ideas into a single functional unit policy, but of an ideology that is based on the notion that the nuclear age, political, social, gender, class and other differences are something that inhibits humanity in its real progress. At the same time, Petra Kelly has shown that true feminism is not necessarily something that is obscure or something that is politically incorrect. Modern feminism, as it was propagated by Petra Kelly, in compliance with environmental political idea, the idea of peace, nonviolence, anti-nuclear policy and the idea of direct democracy, represents an ideology that, by its political radicalism and its strong criticism of the capitalist society, stands side by side with ecologism. "Cassandra of the nuclear apocalypse", "The Ulrike Meinhof of the eighties", in spite of all her accomplishments for the formation of the German Greens, unfortunately, remained forgotten in the political thought and political practice of the party

Inhalt: In this brief analysis, we use a new dataset of two million voter registration records to demonstrate that gender, race, and age do not correlate with political participation in the ways that previous research has shown. Among Blacks and Latinos, women participate at vastly higher rates than men; many Blacks participate at higher rates than Whites; and the relationship between age and participation is both not linear and varies by race and gender. Survey research is unable to capture the true relationship between demographics and participation on account of survey bias and, more importantly, the non-linearity of effects. As a result, theories of participation, like the dominant resources-based models, have been built on faulty premises and tested with inadequate data. Our evidence calls for a renewed effort to understand election participation by utilizing large datasets, by being attentive to linearity assumptions, and by returning to theory.

"Talking point(s)": what Singaporean female politicians choose to say in parliament
Autor/in:
Devasahayam, Theresa W.
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This paper investigates the implications of women's underrepresentation in politics in relation to the kinds of issues they raise in Parliament. It has two objectives. First it raises the question of whether the current cohort of female MPs in Singapore has different political interests from their male colleagues, and second, it seeks to understand the larger concern of whether female MPs see their role in politics to be different from that of men's. Through an investigation of the kinds of issues female and male MPs have raised and discussed in Parliament, the paper argues that because the current cohort of female MPs operate within a paradigm that is masculine, they tend not to voice their opinion exclusively on issues thought to belong traditionally to the domain of women but rather on a range of issues. By not restricting themselves to discussing women's issues only, it is evident that these women have consciously chosen to demonstrate that they are equal to men and they are capable of handling any issue. Among Singaporean female MPs, there is an implicit understanding that they were voted in based on their capacity to contribute and serve the community to fulfil the goals of their respective parties rather than on their gender identity." Kontinuitäten im Wandel: Handlungskoordinationen von Frauenrechtsaktivistinnen in Aceh
Autor/in:
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Muslim women activists in Aceh play a central role in eliminating social and political ills and promoting women's rights. In their visions of a new Aceh, they situate themselves between their Islamic belief and Acehnese identity as well as between the nation state and international conventions. The central question presented in this article relates to experiences and factors which influence the aspirations, goals, strategies, and implementation of women's rights work among women activists in Aceh. Based on an 11-month ethnographic field research and biographic interviews, the author argues that Muslim women activists do not perceive their work for the advancement of women as a result of their own experiences of discrimination by existing patriarchal structures. Rather, the source of their engagement lies within their empathy and solidarity with physically and psychologically suffering female conflict victims. Due to the increasing institutionalization and commodification of reconstruction and development aid after the tsunami of 2004, women activists recognize large discrepancies between the aims of foreign donors and those of local organizations and emphasize a return to women's needs at the grassroot level." Heterogenität, Fragmentierung und Handlungsmacht von Frauenrechtsaktivistinnen in Aceh, Indonesien
Titelübersetzung:Heterogeneity, Fragmentation, and Leverage of Women in Aceh, Indonesia
Autor/in:
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Aceh Nanggroe Darussalam, the most Northwestern province of Indonesia with the nickname 'Makkah's veranda', finds itself in a turbulent transformation after the tsunami of 2004 and the end of an almost thirty-year long secession struggle in 2005. Acehan Muslim women's rights activists develop and legitimize blueprints of a new Aceh, put forward their demands, work out strategies and implement their agendas. They position themselves between religiosity, public space, the nation-state and international conventions. But they also face enormous challenges, which have led to a crisis in organizational engagement. The article examines the complex post-conflict situation of activists in Aceh. Despite the said 'crisis' in organizing for women's rights, activists believe in their ability to effect change; the province exhibits, so the author's argument, a constant organizational capacity for women's rights."
