Inhalt: "Adolescent environments are strongly influenced by societal change processes; first and foremost the medialization shapes diverse new challenges and developmental tasks for the youth. Media is increasingly competing with major agents for socialization. Particularly new and social media gain influence and contribute to changes in adolescent leisure patterns. This development raises the question, if the medialization displaces sports activities and teenagers therefore become media-fixed couch potatoes that are only virtually interacting instead of being physically active. Against the background of three theses - namely displacement, engagement or independence of sport and media orientated leisure activities - the aim of the research is a quantitative analysis of the mutual interference of sports and the use of the internet and social networking sites. Furthermore gendered patterns concerning the relation of sport and media orientated activities will be examined. The empirical analysis is based on the MediKuS study - a study of cultural-, sport- and media-orientated leisure activities of adolescents - carried out by the German Youth Institute in 2011/2012. To answer the questions the authors refer to the dataset of the 13- to 17-years old adolescents." (author's abstract)

Inhalt: "Die Übergänge in Ausbildung (1. (Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Transitions from school to vocational training or studies and work seem to be major junctions in lifespan. In the course of societal changes these transitions are getting increasingly unsecure and challenge adolescents. For coping with those high demands educational processes taking place in non-formal leisure activities become more important: They are able to promote personal development and moreover impart qualifications useful for the labor market. The current paper aims to answer the question whether organized leisure activities and cultural activity at the end of compulsory schooling affect vocational goal orientation and transitions from school to vocational training and work positively. Therefore the Resource Model of Coping with Life was applied as theoretical framework. A secondary data analysis wasconducted using the Transition Panel of the German Youth Institute. Three measuring points were integrated in logistic regression modeling: 1) Baseline-survey at the end of compulsory school (N=3922), 2) survey half a year after compulsory school (N=1701), 3) survey five years after school (N=873). As expected small relationships between leisure activities and vocational goal orientation were found. No effects of leisure activities could be found for the transition half a year after school. Hence for the transition five years after compulsory schooling little positive effects could be found for organized leisure activities. The effects persist while controlling for socio economic status, migration background and sex." (author's abstract)

Gendered Negotiations: Engagements with 'Modernity' and Identity Change amongst Chiapeneco Youth in Mexico
Autor/in:
Ruse, Jamie-Leigh
Quelle: Studies of Transition States and Societies, 3 (2011) 2, S 26-41
Inhalt: "In this paper I wish to examine how changes have occurred in the processes of gendered identity construction amongst Mexican youths through examining local experiences of global, and specifically Mexican, modernities. Based on f eldwork carried out amongst youths in the city of San Cristobal de las Casas, in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, my analysis addresses how youths plan for the future in the context of economic and political marginalisation, and how this affects the way in which they pursue different forms of romantic relationships. I also address changes that have occurred in youths’ understandings, perceptions and performances of their gendered identities in the context of a highly developed local tourist industry, the advent of mass media, and new online social worlds. My study shows how gendered identity construction amongst youths here becomes context-dependent, and how it encompasses individual agency whilst at the same time being negotiated through wider structural and social limitations. I also wish to demonstrate how changing gendered identities amongst youths are constantly constructed and renegotiated by individuals seeking to accommodate notions of modernity with perceptions of the traditional, and how these individuals balance contesting notions of gendered identities within themselves. This is, therefore, a study of local and gendered identity change amongst youths in the context of localised modernities and rapid social change." (author's abstract)
