(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This contribution deals with methodological consideration s and methodical approaches to a dispositive analysis. Siegfried Jäger (2001) argued that an explicit method can be developed only in connection with concrete research projects. Other researchers have presented additional theoretical considerations (Bührmann & Schneider 2007, 2008; Keller 2007). In this article I would like to introduce methodical approaches and demonstrate them with the help of a concrete research project. This approach connects methodological reflections on the intersectional multilevel analysis by Winker and Degele (2009) with attempts of a dispositive analysis after Foucault (1978). These considerations refer to the concluded research project 'Gender regime. An intersectional dispositive analysis of work-life-balance measures' (Paulus, 2012). I offer an explanation of the dispositive analysis after Foucault (1978), and methodological considerations of the theory of intersectionality. Both attempts will be triangulated in order to make the theoretical construction of an intersectional dispositive analysis clear. The theoretical construction will be explicated by a historical example of a post-Fordist gender regime. The results refer to the relevance of an intersectional dispositive analysis for other research possibilities." (author's abstract)
Titelübersetzung:People with disabilities as border crossers in the academic sector: chances for participatory research

Inhalt: Currently people with disabilities have a small or non-existent presence in research activities that explore the lives of people like them. However, there is a strong tradition of such research in special education and medical research. In this article we introduce various approaches to participatory, emancipatory, inclusive, and transdisciplinary research, and illustrate their origin and characteristics. Based on Pierre BOURDIEU’s theory and principles of field, capital and habitus, reasons are illustrated why people with disabilities are excluded from the academic world, as well as the barriers they have to face. We offer examples from our own research practice. The results of research in German-speaking countries confirm that people with disabilities should be included in the design of research projects, the process of evaluation, and the interpretation of data. Because of that we appeal for a radical change at institutions of higher education and a comprehensive inclusion of people with disabilities in the conception of research projects as well as in the operation of surveys and the evaluation and interpretation of data. Linguistic barriers as well as the balance of power ought to be reviewed. The granting of research funds ought to be contingent upon approved participation of people with disabilities.

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article discusses - from a theoretical and empirical point of view - how to integrate a transnational perspective into research. Therefore, the concept of articulation (Laclau/ Mouffe; Hall) will be introduced to analyze hybrid positions and their interrelation with dominant discourses, 'axes of difference' (Klinger/ Knapp/ Sauer) and power relations. To show some of the results from this analysis an interview will be presented. The focus of this analysis lies on positions in the context of migration and masculinity. Here one can find differences that lead to the question of how the interrelation between transnational localization and gender relations works." (author's abstract)

Variance estimation for complex indicators of poverty and inequality using linearization techniques
Autor/in:
Osier, Guillaume
Quelle: Survey Research Methods, 3 (2009) 3, S 167-195
Inhalt: "The paper presents the Eurostat experience in calculating measures of precision, including standard errors, confidence intervals and design effect coefficients - the ratio of the variance of a statistic with the actual sample design to the variance of that statistic with a simple random sample of same size - for the 'Laeken' indicators, that is, a set of complex indicators of poverty and inequality which had been set out in the framework of the EU-SILC project (European Statistics on Income and Living Conditions). The Taylor linearization method (Tepping, 1968; Woodru, 1971; Wolter, 1985; Tillé, 2000) is actually a well-established method to obtain variance estimators for nonlinear statistics such as ratios, correlation or regression coefficients. It consists of approximating a nonlinear statistic with a linear function of the observations by using first-order Taylor Series expansions. Then, an easily found variance estimator of the linear approximation is used as an estimator of the variance of the nonlinear statistic. Although the Taylor linearization method handles all the nonlinear statistics which can be expressed as a smooth function of estimated totals, the approach fails to encompass the 'Laeken' indicators since the latter are having more complex mathematical expressions. Consequently, a generalized linearization method (Deville, 1999), which relies on the concept of influence function (Hampel, Ronchetti, Rousseeuw and Stahel, 1986), has been implemented. After presenting the EU-SILC instrument and the main target indicators for which variance estimates are needed, the paper elaborates on the main features of the linearization approach based on influence functions. Ultimately, estimated standard errors, confidence intervals and design effect coefficients obtained from this approach are presented and discussed." (author's abstract)

Metaphernanalyse und die Konstruktion von Geschlecht
Titelübersetzung:Metaphor Analysis and the Construction of Gender
Autor/in:
Schmitt, Rudolf
Quelle: Forum Qualitative Sozialforschung / Forum: Qualitative Social Research, 10 (2009) 2, 37 S
Inhalt: Recently there has been an increasing number of studies on the construction of gender based on metaphors (KOLLER, 2004a, 2004b, 2005; ANDERSON VASBY & HORN SHEELER, 2005; EBELING & SCHMITZ, 2006; BOCK VON WÜLFINGEN, 2007). Many of these studies seem to have overlooked one of the most thoroughly developed theories of metaphor, LAKOFF and JOHNSON's so-called cognitive theory of metaphor or limited themselves to LAKOFF and JOHNSON's first book from 1980. In this article I explore current research on metaphor and gender and sketch the central topics of the cognitive theory of metaphor and develop a revision of this theory. It is hoped that this will enhance further research in metaphor analysis concerning the construction of gender.
Debunking myths in CAQDAS use and coding in qualitative data analysis: experiences with and reflections on grounded theory methodology
Autor/in:

Quelle: Historical Social Research, Supplement, (2007) 19, S 258-275
Inhalt: 'The author deliberates firstly the primacy of grounded theory as a methodology and secondly the primacy of grounded theory coding as a method in deciding on CAQDAS use in his research. In the first section of this paper, the author weighs the extent to which his research draws and departs from the principles and practices of grounded theory methodology (GTM). In examining the impact of cultures and religions on women's human rights in Malaysia the author has used for example hypothesis-guided criteria for sampling. This is strictly speaking not in the original sense a grounded theory approach. In the paper, the author makes transparent the extent to which GTM has informed his work in enhancing the qualitative research and in highlighting the uses and limits of GTM, the author poses the question to what extent has the author demystified its paradigmatic status in CAQDAS and its homogenising effects. In the second section, the author discusses the dominance of coding in qualitative data analysis and the author argues that the pitfall of reifying coding as analyses can be avoided through a researcher's reflexivity and agency (self-determination) combined with a pragmatic view and the use of codes as a means and not as an end, essentially, grounded theory coding. The author discusses whether CAQDAS use as a tool facilitates the rigour of GTM and the transparency of grounded theory coding as method as manifested in one's audit trail, and whether this in turn constitute research that is more accountable, innovative and effective.'
