(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This comparative study focuses on the historical Russian and British Women's Movement from the beginning of the 20th century to World War I. The movements’ key issues included access to education and work, civic and political rights. The respective national contexts differed considerably in regards to political, social and cultural conditions, which led to specific forms in the field of social movements. Still, a closer look shows similarities concerning claims, forms of protest, and mobilisation. Based on a 'most-different-case selection', this study systematically examines commonalities and differences, in order to provide a wider perspective on processes of power generation and empowerment." Milena Jesenská und Alice Rühle-Gerstel: Konstruktionen gesellschaftlicher Nichtanerkennung
Titelübersetzung:Milena Jesenská and Alice Rühle-Gerstel: Reconstructing social non-recognition
Autor/in:
Darowska, Lucyna
Inhalt: The starting point for this article is the supposition that two significant female 20th century intellectuals, Milena Jesenská and Alice Rühle-Gerstel, have so far received only modest recognition for their achievements. The article briefly outlines the remarkable achievements of these two authors and activists and then analyzes the reception of their work. A number of events and processes can be identified which resulted in the misinterpretation and less than satisfactory consideration of their contributions. Theoretical approaches in the fields of political philosophy and political sociology are applied in the course of this analysis. Both the political system and asymmetrical gender power relations contributed in various ways to the false interpretation of the achievements of the two intellectuals. On account of their untimely deaths, both women were unable to build up their academic reputations, for example by means of being visible to and in contact with the public. The article demonstrates the need for further research into the biographies and legacies of Milena Jesenská and Alice Rühle-Gerstel, including from the feminist perspective. It also aspires to stimulate this critical discourse.
Madeleine de Scudéry - Intellektuelle avant la lettre?
Titelübersetzung:Madeleine de Scudéry - an intellectual woman in early modern France
Autor/in:
Hergenhan, Jutta
Inhalt: Madeleine de Scudéry - an intellectual woman in early modern France In France, the idea of intellectual endeavour is closely associated with male actors defending the universal values of the Enlightenment. However, women already led an intellectual life back in 17th century France, notwithstanding contemporary social and gender-related conventions. As writers and salon hostesses, several of these women pleaded for more respectful gender relations and criticized existing inequalities between women and men. Madeleine de Scudéry was one of these women, who were called précieuses by their contemporaries. In both her literary writing and the choices she made in her personal life she confronted difficult topics for women, such as "education and knowledge", "marriage" and "female authorship". Madeleine de Scudéry adopted unconventional positions and took unorthodox personal decisions, and engaged in a profound refl ection of women's living conditions, which made her both an exceptional fi gure in her time and the prototype of an early intellectual.
Unblinding history through literature in Tanushree Podder's, escape from harem

Inhalt: The history of India had been coloured by series of brutal invasion, torture, bloodshed and massacre in the name of religion and conquest. One of the most remembered invasions is by the Mughals in the beginning of 16th. century where Babar successfully established the Mughal dynasty in 1526. The Mughal dynasty, from the eyes of the historians is one of the most dynamic dynasty which possessed splendour, wealth, bravery, artistic architecture and conquerors who fought to glorify Islam. While historians and history were limited to the study of chronological events, the historical novel Escape from Harem took the liberty to peep into the human and humanity of this dynasty; a scope which is deep irrelevant in the study of history. This paper intends to show how Tanushree Podder exposes some unknown episodes from the history of these great conquerors and builders through her novel, Escape from Harem. Strings of episodes and secrets which may not be deemed important by historians are revealed as the readers follow the journey of the girl who is taken into the harem. These episodes will be seen in the light of new historicism. This research reveals the dark side of the dynasty which are as intriguing as the magnitude of splendours which are identified with this kingdom and its rulers. The untold stories from the darkest chamber of the harem, massacre, filicide, fratricide, animalistic behaviour of emperors and the oppressive treatment cast upon women that was carried from one generation to another in the name of power and conquest will be brought to light through this research.

Inhalt: After some introductory remarks, this article gives a brief overview on contem-porary terrorism research in the political and social sciences. Then, the important contributions historical studies have made to enhance the academic knowledge about terrorism are sketched. The third part provides an overview which not only critically discusses the state of research on gendered aspects of terrorism but also demonstrates the stimulating insights gained by employing a historical perspective in this field. In the fourth chapter, the authors outline some promising topics of future terrorism research which all can be studied from gender sensitive historical perspectives. Finally the results of the contributions put together for this HSR Special Issue are summarized.

"Leichtere Beschäftigungen": Geschlechterdifferenz als Leitbild der Forstlichen Arbeitswissenschaft
Titelübersetzung:'Lighter work': gender difference as a general principle in Forest Work Science
Autor/in:
Westermayer, Till
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Forestry presents itself as a male domain. As a discipline, Forest Work Science (Forstliche Arbeitswissenschaft) has helped to shape this sphere of work since the 1920s. Content analysis of 'classic' texts from this sub-discipline of Forest Science allow the dominant gender image to be reconstructed as being based on differences in several dimensions. Women and men are described almost as different 'species'. That difference is in particular constructed in relation to physical ability and 'gender-specific' skills. Women are seen as being in need of protection. All these differences normalize the gendered division of work, assigning men the role of breadwinner and women that of being responsible for family work for the man. The article concludes by asking to what extent this differentiation still exists and wherein lie the advantages and disadvantages of switching from difference to diversity as the dominant mode of thinking in (Forestry) Work Science." Theories and heuristics: how best to approach the study of historic fertility declines?
Autor/in:
Szreter, Simon
Quelle: Historical Social Research, 36 (2011) 2, S 65-98
Inhalt: "This paper argues that a move away from a unifying but teleological framework for studying fertility declines can only been intellectually emancipating and is a necessary precondition for scientific advance. The study of change in human reproduction is an immensely complex and multi-faceted problem which requires the combination of both quantitative and qualitative forms of evidence and their respective methodologies of enquiry. The theoretical challenge is to construct an intellectually facilitating heuristic framework for synthesis of comparative, multidisciplinary study of the multiple fertility declines that have occurred, not to seek a replacement 'general narrative' for discredited demographic transition and modernization theories. Quantitative historical demography can only gain in its explanatory power by engaging with studies which also incorporate research into such qualitative aspects of gender as sex and power and which address a more historicist understanding of the role of culture by exploring its relationship with institutions, ideology and politics. It is argued that a number of recent, contextualized local and comparative studies of fertility declines are demonstrating how productively to combine quantitative and qualitative methods to explore rigorously these aspects of the history of fertility declines. Within the heuristic framework envisaged here, priorities for further research in the future would include exploring comparatively the relationship between reproductive change and communication communities with respect to the ideologically and politically-mediated issues of sex, religion, health, disease and education." Feminist perspectives on motherhood and reproduction

Neyer, Gerda; Bernardi, Laura
Quelle: Historical Social Research, 36 (2011) 2, S 162-176
Inhalt: "Motherhood and reproduction have been at the core of the feminist discourse about women's rights ever since its onset. For the first and second feminist movements, the right to abortion and the public recognition of motherhood have been main issues in the discourse on reproduction. Since the last two decades of the 20th century, the potentials of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) have opened up new venues of feminist discourse. In this paper the authors sketch the main feminist lines of argumentation regarding motherhood and reproduction since the 1970s, and they identify specific shifts in their recurrent issues. They argue that an essential contribution of feminism to the understanding of motherhood as a structuring category has been its insistence on the distinction between biological and social motherhood. Feminist discourse shows how ART has further decomposed biological motherhood and has altered the meaning of motherhood and reproduction. Feminist analysis maintains that despite the rhetoric of choice surrounding ART, these technologies have not increased women's reproductive freedom. The decomposition of biological motherhood, the medical, legal, and commercial development of reproduction, and the change in the social perception of motherhood have rather established new forms of control over female reproduction." Inhalt: "In this paper, the authors discuss individualization theory as a parsimonious framework concept to describe and explain core points of fertility change in Western societies since the end of the 19th century. They emphasize two dimensions of individualization: firstly, the increase in status of the individual in cultural, social, economic and legal respects (human dignity); secondly, the increase in autonomy and freedom of choice. In contrast to other approaches based on individualization theory, the authors do not use the concept of self-realization in the sense of an increased orientation towards purely individual interests, not least because this concept has failed before the renewed rise in fertility that has recently been observed in some advanced societies. They discuss the relevance of these two dimensions of individualization in the context of the first transition and the 1960s with its declining fertility rates. Whereas the first demographic transition can be mainly explained by the rising status of children, which increased the costs of parenting and thus changed the interests of (potential) parents to have children, the transition in the 1960s resulted mainly from the rising status of women in education and the labor market. An important but hitherto neglected change was the increasing divorce rates, as the possibility to dissolve a marriage devalued the traditional gender contract of the breadwinner/ housewife model and decreased the willingness of women and men to invest in marriage and children. The contrast between the recently growing fertility rates in Sweden, France and the US with the continuously low fertility in the German-speaking countries can partly be seen as a result of different divorce regimes. Whereas the first group of countries has limited the entitlement to spousal support through alimonies, the second group has institutionalized extensive entitlements for mothers." (author's abstract)
