Inhalt: There recently was a highly emotional debate in Germany regarding what to teach children about sexual plurality; different actors accuse each other of wrongful indoctrination. This paper presents a computational model based on the results of the SINUS youth study 2016 indicating that the dynamics of adolescents finding their own stance towards sexual plurality are resilient towards external pressure by clerical or government activities. Instead, civil society plays a strong role in the process of children developing their own opinions. This underlines that values in society can be reproduced between generations.

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Ritualized hostile behavior towards male homosexuality is prevalent among male youth. Boys are often ignorant about male homosexuality, exclude homosexuals, and/or are violent towards them. This article, which is based on the interpretation of empirical material collected through focus group discussions, proves how gay men can be treated with an open-minded acceptance instead of exclusion and stigmatization. The article shows that the boys' group formations, i.e. peer groups and cliques, have an impact on how male homosexuals are treated. Our study demonstrates the ambivalences of insecurity and constant scrutiny of one's own male role and identity which need to be generated in this process of recognition." (author's abstract)

Inhalt: From the oversexualized characters in fighting games, such as Dead or Alive or Ninja Gaiden, to the overuse of the damsel in distress trope in popular titles, such as the Super Mario series, the under- and misrepresentation of females in video games has been well documented in several content analyses. Cultivation theory suggests that long-term exposure to media content can affect perceptions of social realities in a way that they become more similar to the representations in the media and, in turn, impact one's beliefs and attitudes. Previous studies on video games and cultivation have often been cross-sectional or experimental, and the limited longitudinal work in this area has only considered time intervals of up to 1 month. Additionally, previous work in this area has focused on the effects of violent content and relied on self-selected or convenience samples composed mostly of adolescents or college students. Enlisting a 3 year longitudinal design, the present study assessed the relationship between video game use and sexist attitudes, using data from a representative sample of German players aged 14 and older (N=824). Controlling for age and education, it was found that sexist attitudes—measured with a brief scale assessing beliefs about gender roles in society—were not related to the amount of daily video game use or preference for specific genres for both female and male players. Implications for research on sexism in video games and cultivation effects of video games in general are discussed.

Inhalt: With the use of multiple regression technique, the principal objective of this study is to clarify and examine young people's attitudes towards Muslims, and the relationships between these attitudes and a large number of background factors. We use a representative sample of 9,498 non-Muslim youths between 15–19 years of age. The main results show that when controlling for several background variables simultaneously, the country of birth, socio-economic background and school/program factors all have an effect on the attitude towards Muslims. Moreover, socio-psychological factors, the relationship to friends and the perceptions of gender role patterns are found to be important. In addition, local factors like high levels of unemployment, high shares of immigrants in a local environment also have an effect. No differences in the attitudes of boys and girls were found. Further, the study establishes a correlation between negative attitudes and right-wing populist seats in local government.

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "In this report gender socialization processes should be discussed at the child age and youth age regarding recognition-theoretical approaches and interactional considerations. Extravagating, social labeling, disregards, superiority imperatives, devaluations, and refused recognition are significant not only in the context of xenophobia and politically motivated force, but also mark social practices within the scope of conflict interactions and struggles between genders. On the basis of the results of a qualitative research project with children and youngsters both genders, it can be shown that in the infancy gender conflicts are more likely marked by exceed boundaries, whereas disputes at the youth age concern sexual conflicts with the purpose of reciprocal devaluations."
Titelübersetzung:Perception of violence and peer group participation: empirical findings about perception of violence among female juveniles

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: 'Recent research indicates that violent behaviour of young people is a group phenomenon. Against this backdrop, the article examines the influence of peer group participation on young women's perceptions of violence. The analyses are based on survey data of fifteen year-old female students living in a Swiss city (Basel). The results show that female juveniles who are members of a peer group perceive violence as less serious, show a higher readiness for violent behaviour, report less fear of violence, and use force more often, but suffer more from it in comparison to young women who do not belong to a peer group. Secondly, the probability of using violence as well as of becoming a victim of violence increases with a growing level of peer group organisation. Further research is needed to answer the questions whether the perception of violence depends on additional factors, e.g. education, and whether these findings are valid for male juveniles.'
