Inhalt: This introductory article is intended to open the volume of work prepared by the participants of the 12th UNESCO Janusz Korczak Chair International Summer School. The participants presented these papers at the RC25 ISA Interim International Conference in Warsaw, entitled: "Language and Society. Research Advances in Social Sciences" (26-27.09.2019), exploring the concepts of gender equality and children's equality in liberal and conservative discourses and practices invested in language. The papers in this volume primarily use the methodology of discourse analysis and a range of tools and methods within this framework. The purpose is to shed light on how discourses inform preferences, behaviours and representations, towards the positioning of individuals in society, based on their respective gender and their individual status - whether an adult or a child. It is interesting to explore what is expected of the holders of these positions and whether they are able to confront and renegotiate their situation. The authors look into gendered childhood, analysing if differences can be found in so-called conservative and liberal discourses. The gender aspect of childhood and the resistance towards children’s expected positions interlinked to their gender is visible to diverse degrees in this selection of papers. The concept of social positioning due to one's gender is at the heart of this volume. Therefore, this Editorial forms a theoretical backstage for the volume of works included in the special post-conference issue of Society Register.

Gender construction in sports, family habitus and "gender regime"

Mennesson, Christine; Forté, Lucie
Quelle: Society Register, 2 (2018) 1, S 99-112
Inhalt: This article is based on data collected during a qualitative survey on children's leisure practices and family socialisation patterns. The paper focuses more specifically on the cross effects of gender and social class on the construction of body hexis and relationship to sports. The results show that several dimensions of family habitus must be taken into account: lifestyles, way in which parents divide the tasks of raising children and relationship they have with social competition or gender norms. Moreover, taking these different dimensions into account must be accompanied by an analysis of the concrete modes of socialization within the family and the practice context.

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Up to now within the field of education there has been little research on the lives and experiences of LGBTQ youth in Germany. This lack of research may in part be due to the fact that much of the discussion about school and gender in the field of educational science is based on ethnographic observation combined with a conventional social constructivist approach, and that it often takes heterosexual desire as well as the gender binary as a given. LGBTQ students then only appear as the OTHER of homo- and transphobic actions. This article offers an alternative view of gender norms, gender and desire in school. It takes up Judith Butler's theory of heterosexual hegemony and performativity, as well as her rearticulation of Althusser's 'interpellation' in order to analyze case studies generated from narrative interviews with LGBTQ youth. The analysis presented here details the processes through which gendered and sexual subjects are constituted in day-to-day practices in school classes and casual interactions; it illustrates the (re-)articulations of gender norms and explains the agency of young lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people as described in their narratives of daily practices in school. The article concludes with some remarks on the methodological implications for future gender research in schools." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The study examines what significance Turkish and German adolescents attach to culinary practices associated with their native culture when forming their own sense of identity. At the same time the study picks up on gender-specific differences within the groups, pinpointing how culinary practices can serve to establish gender hierarchies. The social aspects of eating are also considered. Group discussions differentiated according to sex, age and cultural background were conducted using a sample of N=60 in order to elicit gender- and culturally specific orientations among adolescents. A qualitative content analysis was made of the data in a multi-level procedure using the Atlas.ti computer program. On the one hand, the results reveal that there are differences in the extent to which eating habits specific to native culture play a narrative role (major significance among ethnic Turks), while also depicting eating preferences along genderspecific lines: Adolescent males across the board focus on enjoyment and flavor, whereas adolescent girls attribute greater importance to the health aspects of eating. The results provide valuable information on ways in which to target juvenile obesity prevention programs according to culture and gender." (author's abstract)
Gendered Negotiations: Engagements with 'Modernity' and Identity Change amongst Chiapeneco Youth in Mexico
Autor/in:
Ruse, Jamie-Leigh
Quelle: Studies of Transition States and Societies, 3 (2011) 2, S 26-41
Inhalt: "In this paper I wish to examine how changes have occurred in the processes of gendered identity construction amongst Mexican youths through examining local experiences of global, and specifically Mexican, modernities. Based on f eldwork carried out amongst youths in the city of San Cristobal de las Casas, in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, my analysis addresses how youths plan for the future in the context of economic and political marginalisation, and how this affects the way in which they pursue different forms of romantic relationships. I also address changes that have occurred in youths’ understandings, perceptions and performances of their gendered identities in the context of a highly developed local tourist industry, the advent of mass media, and new online social worlds. My study shows how gendered identity construction amongst youths here becomes context-dependent, and how it encompasses individual agency whilst at the same time being negotiated through wider structural and social limitations. I also wish to demonstrate how changing gendered identities amongst youths are constantly constructed and renegotiated by individuals seeking to accommodate notions of modernity with perceptions of the traditional, and how these individuals balance contesting notions of gendered identities within themselves. This is, therefore, a study of local and gendered identity change amongst youths in the context of localised modernities and rapid social change." (author's abstract)
