The trafficking of men in Cambodia: how masculinities challenge notions of victimhood

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This paper addresses the exploitation of Cambodian men on Thai fisher boats. Exploitation is enabled through gender stereotypes that prohibit Cambodian men to identify themselves as victims. In addition, institutions dealing with legal support of victims are based on gender stereotypes. Thus, mainly sexual exploitation and female victims are focused by organizations of support and the state. There are no legal regulations to persecute exploited men and trafficking of men." Socialization and gendered biographical agency in a multicultural migration context: the life history of a young Moroccan woman in Germany
Autor/in:
Al-Rebholz, Anil
Quelle: Zeitschrift für Qualitative Forschung, 15 (2014) 1-2, S 79-96
Inhalt: "In light of the challenges of globalization, hybridization of cultures, and transnational migration movements worldwide, some central deficits of socialization theory have been identified. As a response to these challenges, the necessity of developing 'biographical socialization research' and a 'subject-oriented socialization theory' are underlined. In this paper, the notion of 'biographical agency', embedded in the social and temporal context of biographies, is proposed to overcome shortcomings of the theories of socialization. Drawing on the concepts of biographical knowledge, biographical work and biographical reflexivity, biographical research can show how individuals develop biographical agency and engage in meaningful social actions within their life courses under the conditions of globalization. On the basis of Samira's case, I will point out the kinds of multiple exclusion/ inclusion mechanisms that operate in multicultural societies, mechanisms produced both by majority and minority groups, and how daughters of migrants can acquire biographical resources through their socialization in multicultural contexts to struggle against hierarchical gender norms, conflicting expectations, and restrictive social sites as well as enlarge their sphere of action." Experiences of migration as a space for reflection: renegotiating gender roles in family relationships
Autor/in:
Dudt, Muriel; Kempf, Andreas Oskar; Satola, Agnieszka
Quelle: Zeitschrift für Qualitative Forschung, 15 (2014) 1-2, S 97-113
Inhalt: "Based on biographical narrative interviews with three migrant women, the article discusses how migration experiences can lead to a reflection of gender roles. In the three cases, there are various motivations for migration, different family arrangements and work experiences throughout the migration process, and also a change of roles of the women within their families. For the interview partners, the access to material resources achieved partly under great sacrifice and the possibility to compare different life contexts and gender regimes triggered an ambivalent process of reflection on gender relations. Their reorganization of gender relations can be rather incomplete or require strong legitimization upon return; it can also be transmitted as a project for the next generation to complete." The construction of gender in the migration space: Polish women in the UK
Titelübersetzung:Geschlechterkonstruktion und Migration: Polnische Frauen in Großbritannien
Autor/in:
Siara, Bernadetta
Inhalt: "This article focuses on the construction of gender by Polish women who migrated to the United Kingdom after the 2004 enlargement of the European Union. It draws on interviews carried out with 30 Polish women in various locations in the UK. In the article the author suggests that migration may create a potential for change in gender construction and look at whether and, if so, what changes took place in Polish women's views on gender. He also argues that constructions around gender in the migration space need to be considered in the light of wider gender structural contexts co-constructed by the state, religious institutions and women's movements in both the country of migration and the country of origin. Moreover, he proposes that gender contexts, in this case specifically in Poland, cannot be seen as static, but rather as dynamic and constantly changing." (author's abstract)
Integration im Spannungsfeld kultureller Differenzen: Islam und Geschlecht in der Marktgemeinde Telfs in Tirol

Autor/in:
Hollomey, Christina
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: 'The aim of this paper is to show an example of a local integration project in the Tyrolean municipality of Telfs. How does a multicultural discourse contribute to the exclusion of women in the process of negotiating integration? Local municipalities, in trying to find new ways of ´living together liaise with migrant associations in order to get into contact with the local immigrant population. However, both actors often employ an essentialistview of culture that tends to naturalizehegemonic constructions of identity and finally leads to the reproduction of asymmetric structures of participation. Thus, integration projects may fail to address basic structural inequalities between social majorities and minorities. The focus of this paper is on women engaged in two Turkish Islamic associations in the Austrian Tyrolean municipality of Telfs. Discussing the example of a locally implemented integration project, it analyses how a multicultural discourse can serve to legitimate asymmetric participation structures within associations, as well as to reproduce them in the cooperation between migrant organizations and local municipalities.' Migration experiences and changes of identity: the analysis of a narrative
Titelübersetzung:Migrationserfahrungen und Identitätsveränderungen: die Analyse einer Erzählung
Autor/in:
Kazmierska, Kaja
Quelle: Historical Social Research, 31 (2006) 3, S 72-89
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: 'This paper is based on the analysis of an autobiographical narrative interview with a Turkish woman living in Germany. The author analyzes the process of identity changes influenced by the narrator's migration experiences. It has at least two aspects. One aspect refers to the cultural roots of the narrator. New experiences have changed her self-image of being a woman. A second aspect is connected with the narrator's life course. The narrative shows how a naive girl has become an adult and independent woman. Being a woman is defined with the help of categories belonging to Western culture. Therefore, the process of migration is related to losing culturally influenced ways of describing the narrator's identity. As a result, she becomes a stranger in her homeland, but she also remains a stranger in the country to which she migrated. The auhtor analyzes the narrator's work on this problem.' Hülya's migration to Germany as self-sacrifice undergone and suffered in love for her parents, and her later biographical individualisation: biographical problems and biographical work of marginalisation and individualisation of a young Turkish woman in Germany
Autor/in:
Schütze, Fritz
Quelle: Historical Social Research, 31 (2006) 3, S 107-126
Inhalt: After asking what is typical or general in the life history of Hülya as a migrant worker in Germany and what is exceptional or unique (section 1) the biographical processes of her life history up to the most central episodes of her conventional and estranging pre-arranged marriage and her way out of it through divorce after having stayed in Germany for several years will be delineated (section 2). Before reaching this turning point Hülya not only undergoes the 'common' type trajectory of a migrant worker - the trajectory of being a cultural stranger, of being void of language, of being exploited by hardest sorts of work -, but, in addition, her personal biographical development is retarded by the exceptional, but probably not totally untypical experience of being trapped within a situation of compulsory labour (resembling slave labour). For a long time she also feels obliged to remain in her trajectory position of an isolated migrant worker, since originally she had mainly meant to go to Germany in order to support her poverty stricken family back in Turkey with her earnings. Partly based on the fear that she will get self-alienated and 'petrified' like the older women with whom she dwells and works together Hülya accepts a pre-arranged marriage (probably mainly negotiated by her mother) as the only way out of her predicament. But willy-nilly Hülya must learn that she - already embarked on her way to an individualized and emancipated existence - cannot live in such a superimposed arrangement, and therefore she distances herself from her husband through the biographical escape action schemes first of returning to Germany alone and then of pushing ahead her divorce.
