Inhalt: Madeleine de Scudéry - an intellectual woman in early modern France In France, the idea of intellectual endeavour is closely associated with male actors defending the universal values of the Enlightenment. However, women already led an intellectual life back in 17th century France, notwithstanding contemporary social and gender-related conventions. As writers and salon hostesses, several of these women pleaded for more respectful gender relations and criticized existing inequalities between women and men. Madeleine de Scudéry was one of these women, who were called précieuses by their contemporaries. In both her literary writing and the choices she made in her personal life she confronted difficult topics for women, such as "education and knowledge", "marriage" and "female authorship". Madeleine de Scudéry adopted unconventional positions and took unorthodox personal decisions, and engaged in a profound refl ection of women's living conditions, which made her both an exceptional fi gure in her time and the prototype of an early intellectual.

Inhalt: "Marrying too old, too young, or not at all could elicit scorn from all sides: family, friends and neighbours. The same could occur when a partner was much younger or older. During modernization new societal norms on marriage are supposed to have emerged and to have become more pervasive, as individual access to and timing of marriage became less dependent on family fortunes and family strategies. In this article, life courses of more than 15.000 Dutch individuals are studied in order to answer the question: was their timing of marriage and choice of partner related to (changing) life scripts - and what social or cultural groups were the carriers of these scripts - or still predominantly determined by family dynamics?" Life scripts and life realities: women in nineteenth-century Nijmegen

Inhalt: "On average, more than one fifth of the 19th century Nijmegen brides were pregnant at the date of marriage. In a society where extramarital sexuality was explicitly forbidden, and where the success of marriage restriction depended on following that rule, this finding is remarkable. Obviously, the cultural life script that allowed sexuality only within marriage was not a script all inhabitants lived up to. A remarkable secondary finding is that the protestant population had a much higher proportion of bridal pregnancies than the Roman Catholic population, although both the Protestant and the Roman Catholic clergy strongly opposed sexual activities, unless within marriage. Therefore, when bridal pregnancy among Protestant couples was twice as high as among Catholics, this points either at a stricter control by the Catholic clergy, or at more deviance among Protestant youngsters. In any case, when studying cultural life scripts on sexuality, it is always important to note that it can be countered by human agency." (author's abstract)

Problematisierte Patrilinearität bei den ParsInnen in Mumbai
Titelübersetzung:Challenged patrilineality of Parsis in Mumbai

Inhalt: "The autonomy of religious communities in India concerning the realm of personal law allows the direct influence of religion on the configuration of gender relations. This is also the case for the community of Parsi Zoroastrians, an economic elite within Mumbai, whose patrilineal concept of community is legitimated with reference to religious tradition. Liberal Parsis criticize patrilineality and call for gender equity. This article offers a reconstruction of the discursive process and the main arguments therein, which allows a characterization of the communal configurations between gender and religion, and their relation to tradition and change." Women and the colonial state: essays on gender and modernity in the Netherlands Indies 1900-1942

Inhalt: Woman and the Colonial State deals with the ambiguous relationship between women of both the European and the Indonesian population and the colonial state in the former Netherlands Indies in the first half of the twentieth century. Based on new data from a variety of sources: colonial archives, journals, household manuals, children's literature, and press surveys, it analyses the women-state relationship by presenting five empirical studies on subjects, in which women figured prominently at the time: Indonesian labour, Indonesian servants in colonial homes, Dutch colonial fashion and food, the feminist struggle for the vote and the intense debate about monogamy of and by women at the end of the 1930s. An introductory essay combines the outcomes of the case studies and relates those to debates about Orientalism, the construction of whiteness, and to questions of modernity and the colonial state formation.

(pmb)
