Inhalt: The literature on gender and professions shows that professional careers continue to be impacted by gender – albeit with important differences among professions and countries. Much less researched is the issue of the significance of gender and age-cohort or generation to professional work.
Gender, Age and Inequality in the Professions explores men’s and women’s experiences of professional work and careers through an intersectional lens by focusing on the intersection of gender and age. The chapters explore different professions – including Medicine, Nursing, Law, Academia, Information Technology and Engineering – in different Western countries, in the present and over time. Through original research, and critical re-analysis of existing research, each of the chapters explores the significance of gender and age-cohort or generation to professional work, with particular attention to professionals just entering professional careers, those building professional careers, and comparisons of men and women in professions across generational cohorts.
The book contributes to literature on inequalities in the professions by demonstrating the ways in which gender and age converge to confer privilege and produce disadvantage, and the ways in which gender inequality is reproduced, and disrupted, through the activities of professionals on the job. The book constitutes a departure point for future research in terms of theoretical perspectives and empirical findings on how gendered and age-related processes are produced and reproduced in particular organisational, professional and socio-cultural contexts. To enhance generational understanding, relationships and collaboration in educational institutions, organisations and professions, the book ends with a section on policy recommendations for educators, professionals, professional organisations as well as policy- and decision-makers. This book will also appeal to students and researchers in the fields of Sociology, Gender Studies, Organisational and Management Studies, Law, Medicine, Engineering and Information Technology as well as related disciplines.

The Gender Pay Gap in Academia: Evidence from the Ohio State University
Autor/in:
Chen, Joyce J.; Crown, Daniel
Quelle: American Journal of Agricultural Economics, 101 (2019) 5, S 1337–1352
Inhalt: We utilize human resources data from The Ohio State University to assess the gender wage gap. We find a persistent gap of 11% among regular, tenure-track faculty after accounting for fiscal year, race, clinical appointments, experience, and department. While the presence of a statistically significant gender wage gap is robust, the magnitude of the gap varies substantially depending on how the sample of interest is defined. In assessing gender wage gaps, researchers and universities must be attentive to issues of attrition and classification. Transparency regarding how estimates are affected by sample exclusions and variable definitions will yield insight into possible sources of gender bias.

Inhalt: We examined publicly available faculty salaries for men and women faculty members at 16 university programs accredited by the Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI). Overall, 52.4% of the 103 faculty members were women, although there were twice as many men as women at the full-professor level. Our data suggest that ABAI-accredited training programs pay women less than men at all academic levels. Both in absolute terms and relative to the wage gap reported in other areas of psychology, the difference in mean wages for women and men in our sample was substantial. The mean salaries of men were 13%, 6%, and 15% greater than those of women at the assistant-, associate-, and full-professor levels, respectively. At all levels, the highest salary reported was earned by a man, and the lowest salary was earned by a woman. This is an embarrassment for our discipline. It is time for a change, and we behavior analysts have the tools to make change happen. Let us put those tools to good use.

Die Frau im Kapitalismus : Eine feministische Kritik der politischen Ökonomie
Autor/in:
Vogel, Lise

Women and politics : A quest for political equality in an age of economic inequality
Autor/in:
Burrell, Barbara
Quelle: New York: Routledge (Routledge series on identity politics), 2018. pages cm
Inhalt: This textbook presents a much-needed exploration of the many ways that women in the United States have used their voices in the political process.
Written in a concise and accessible style, Women and Politics equips students with the necessary skills and knowledge to understand the political involvement of women as individuals and their efforts to achieve political and economic equity as a group. This textbook is both historical, examining trends, and contemporary, focusing on participation and the public policy concerns of women in the early decades of the 21st century.
Key content and features:
· Exploration of diverse actions women have taken to achieve empowerment and gender equity
· Surveys women as voters, as candidates for elected office, and as interest group organizers lobbying for equity in public policy and for global women’s rights
· Chronicles protest actions against unequal practices of economic and governmental elites
· Highlights the actions of women with few economic resources that join together to challenge local power structures.
Readers will appreciate Burrell's valuable insights on the multiple political voices of American women and the challenges of economic inequality in their quest for political equality.

Inhalt: Biases against women in the workplace have been documented in a variety of studies. This paper presents a large scale study on gender bias, where we compare acceptance rates of contributions from men versus women in an open source software community. Surprisingly, our results show that women’s contributions tend to be accepted more often than men’s. However, for contributors who are outsiders to a project and their gender is identifiable, men’s acceptance rates are higher. Our results suggest that although women on GitHub may be more competent overall, bias against them exists nonetheless.
