(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The parental leave benefit reform which was enacted in 2007 in Germany aimed among other things at increasing fathers' involvement in childcare. This paper analyzes the degree to which fathers claim parental leave benefits in the context of couples' social characteristics and economic resources using the data set 'Young Families 2008' (collected by the RWI Essen). In two select federal states in the Northern part of Germany, a further reaching investigation was conducted as to how parental leave is distributed within couples by using administrative data provided by local authorities. In general, the results Show that economic considerations are of great importance for men's decisions to take any parental leave at all, or to do so for an extended period. Further analyses indicate that economic explanations do not fully account for men's parental leave decisions under certain circumstances of the female partner such as self-employment or participation in training or further education." Gender equality and fertility intentions revisited evidence from Finland
Titelübersetzung:Gleichstellung der Geschlechter und Fruchtbarkeitsabsichten, korrigierte Ergebnisse aus Finnland
Autor/in:
Miettinen, Anneli; Basten, Stuart; Rotkirch, Anna
Quelle: Demographic Research, Vol. 24 (2011) , S. 469-496
Inhalt: "Stimulated by the recent debate on gender roles and men's fertility behavior (Puur et al. 2008; Westoff and Higgins 2009; Goldscheider, Oláh and Puur 2010), the authors present evidence from Finland as a country well into the second phase of the so-called gender revolution. They examine how gender role attitudes relate to childbearing intentions at the onset of family life, intentions to have many (3 or more) children, and high personal fertility ideals among low-parity men and women. Gender equality attitudes are measured for both the public and the domestic sphere and the influence of work and family orientation is controlled for. Finding signs of a U-shaped association among men, the authors conclude that both traditional and egalitarian attitudes raise men's expected fertility compared to men with intermediate gender attitudes and independently of family values. Among Finnish women the impact of gender attitudes is smaller and more ambiguous." (author's abstract)
Titelübersetzung:Fertility decisions and partnership context effects of educational constellations on family formation based on German Mikrozensus data from 1996-2004

Inhalt: "A review of existing sociological literature on fertility decisions reveals that most empirical studies focus on characteristics of the female spouse as explanatory factors, while the role of the partner is neglected for the most part. However, most children are fathered and born into an existing relationship and the influence of the partner has to be regarded as an important determining factor for childbirth. The authors propose starting from a bargaining perspective and model family-formation as a collective decision mutually agreed upon by both spouses, especially scrutinizing on the interrelation of both partners' educational level. In this paper, they examine in how far certain educational constellations have an impact on family formation. Classical theories of family economics suggest that educational asymmetries between partners may encourage parenthood. Our analysis is based on German Mikrozensus data collected between 1996 and 2004. The large sample allows them to analyze in detail the effects of educational levels as well as uncommon educational constellations. In a first step, the authors investigate separate effects of general and vocational education of each partner, followed by a quasi-cohort design, with women born in the mid 1960th and mid 1970th, to study the timing of the first birth. They conclude that traditional hypergamy may foster parenthood. But also educational homogamy leads to a higher amount of parents as compared to hypogamous couples, in which the wife's educational qualification exceeds the husband's educational degree." Geschlecht bleibt eine wichtige Dimension sozialer Ungleichheit
Titelübersetzung:Gender remains an important dimension of social inequality

Allmendinger, Jutta
Quelle: WZB-Mitteilungen, (2010) H. 129, S. 12-15
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Despite great progress, there still remains a gap between the sexes regarding the opportunities in one's lifetime. Employment rates for women have increased but huge gender differences remain: within the same profession women are often positioned lower than men in the hierarchy, women take breaks from working more often and for longer periods of time and work part-time more often than their male colleagues. It is not a question of freedom of choice for women since existing structures still do not give them a real choice - for women, full-time employment and having children are often an either/ or situation."
