Toward a feminist natural science : linking theory and practice
Autor/in:
Kerr, E. Anne
Quelle: Women's studies international forum, Vol. 21 (1998) No. 1, S. 95-109
Inhalt: "In this paper I tackle the gulf between feminist epistemologies of science and the
practice of the natural sciences. I begin by considering the feminist epistemologies
of science, focusing in particular on standpoint theories and objectivity in the work
of Harding, Haraway, Longino, and Nelson, and identifying the problems in applying
these theories in the natural sciences. I then move on to consider some of the views
expressed by feminists with experience of practice in the natural sciences. I argue
that this gives them a privileged standpoint from which to understand what a feminist
natural science might mean, and use their views to elaborate my critique of the feminist
epistemologies of science. I end by exploring practical strategies for moving toward
a feminist natural science, emphasising diversity amongst practitioners; unpacking
established conceptual categories in science (especially gender); elaborating the
role of subjectivity in guiding research questions and analysing data; and developing
links between the different disciplines of science and with the local community."

Zum Geschlechterverhältnis am Fachbereich Chemie : empirische Befunde zur Ausgrenzung von Frauen aus universitären Positionen
Titelübersetzung:Relationship between the genders in the chemistry faculty : empirical findings on the exclusion of women from university positions
Autor/in:
(pre)

Feminism's lessons for women in science

Evaluating progress in gender equity in careers for women in science and technology : the impact of role modeling on women's career choices
Autor/in:
Norby, Rena Faye
Quelle: The electronic journal of science education, Vol. 1 (1997) No. 3
Inhalt: "Women are still not equally represented in many careers in technology and science.
Young women possess equal abilities in scientific skills in the elementary schools,
but their enrolment in science related classes diminishes as they enter high school
and college. This creates an accumulated disadvantage which deters success in science
and technology classes in college and graduate school. Sex role stereotyping and negative
teacher behaviors affect young women's attitudes about potential for success in careers
that have been stereotyped as masculine. On the other hand, role modeling has been
found to be an important means to encourage young women to choose careers in technology
and science. The intention of this study was to identify, by using the WWW, women
who are currently employed in technology related careers, or training for employment
in technology related careers, and to identify the effects of role models on their
career choices and career persistence. A Professional Women's Directory was located
using a web search, and women who indicated technology as a part of their profession
were identified. The Role Model survey developed by Smith in 1983 was modified for
this group, and sent by E-mail to a randomly selected subset of the total list of
women in technology. This report summarizes the results of the responses to that survey,
and suggests some implications for teacher and scientific professionals planning and
instruction." (author's abstract)|
The loss of women from science, mathematics, and engineering undergraduate majors : an explanatory account
Autor/in:
Seymour, Elaine
Quelle: Science education, Vol. 79 (1995) No. 4, S. 437-473
Inhalt: "The reasons for the loss of high ability women from science, mathematics, and engineering undergraduate majors are not well understood. However, investigators have, consistently, found an early loss of confidence in their ability to do science among such women. In seeking to explain why the vulnerability of women to leaving science majors greatly exceeds that of men, the author draws upon the findings of a 3-year, ethnographic study of factors contributing to high undergraduate attrition rates among men and women of different ethnicities on seven campuses of different type. The explanatory focus is upon the consequences of a misfit between the learned expectations of women entering college mathematics and science classes, and those of faculty and male peers, about the purpose and nature of the undergraduate experience in these majors." Das Verhältnis von Jungen und Mädchen im Vorschulalter zu Technik : Weichenstellungen in Familie und Kindergarten
Titelübersetzung:The relationship of boys and girls of pre-school age regarding technology : introductions in the family and at kindergarten
Autor/in:
Macha, Hildegard
(pka)
