Titelübersetzung:Men with a clear advantage : women still carry the main financial burden during a separation

Radenacker, Anke
Quelle: WZB-Mitteilungen, (2011) H. 134, S. 10-12
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "A comparison of the financial consequences of family break-up over time shows that women still carry the financial burden. Despite increases in women's participation in the work force, they are unable to compensate for the loss of the income the male breadwinner used to provide. Existing incentives for women's exit from the labor market when starting a family are to some extent responsible for a hindered re-entry into employment upon separation." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "A review of existing sociological literature on fertility decisions reveals that most empirical studies focus on characteristics of the female spouse as explanatory factors, while the role of the partner is neglected for the most part. However, most children are fathered and born into an existing relationship and the influence of the partner has to be regarded as an important determining factor for childbirth. The authors propose starting from a bargaining perspective and model family-formation as a collective decision mutually agreed upon by both spouses, especially scrutinizing on the interrelation of both partners' educational level. In this paper, they examine in how far certain educational constellations have an impact on family formation. Classical theories of family economics suggest that educational asymmetries between partners may encourage parenthood. Our analysis is based on German Mikrozensus data collected between 1996 and 2004. The large sample allows them to analyze in detail the effects of educational levels as well as uncommon educational constellations. In a first step, the authors investigate separate effects of general and vocational education of each partner, followed by a quasi-cohort design, with women born in the mid 1960th and mid 1970th, to study the timing of the first birth. They conclude that traditional hypergamy may foster parenthood. But also educational homogamy leads to a higher amount of parents as compared to hypogamous couples, in which the wife's educational qualification exceeds the husband's educational degree."
Titelübersetzung:The new (dis)order of gender : family in a feminist perspective
Autor/in:
Gerhard, Ute
Quelle: Feministische Studien : Zeitschrift für interdisziplinäre Frauen- und Geschlechterforschung, Jg. 28 (2010) Nr. 2, S. 194-213
Inhalt: "A major characteristic of the European family today is a new plurality of forms of private living with an increasing number of one-parent households as well as patchwork families, homosexual couples or intergenerational networks of reliable relationships. The growing number of private lifestyles is especially due to marriage's loss of significance, which is no longer a prerequisite for either sexual partnership or for parenthood. In feminist perspective these structural changes, the remarkable cultural change in gender relations and in family law are not to be lamented as family decay or loss of solidarity, since they also mean more freedom and equal rights of women and children. However, there are still deficits in family policies as regards the division of labour and care responsibilities. The contribution discusses the delays and contradictory consequences of German family policies and legal reforms in exemplary respects: the incessant problems of working mothers, the recent legal reform of maintenance for a spouse after divorce, and the legal recognition of registered homosexual couples. The feminist argument is that there is no Opposition between love and gender justice, on the contrary, that love even presupposes a practice of equal rights in all forms of private living." Children's experiences of family disruption in Sweden : differentials by parent education over three decades

Quelle: Demographic Research, Vol. 23 (2010) , S. 479-508
Inhalt: "This paper examines the living arrangements of Swedish children from 1970 through 1999 using the Level of Living Survey. Sweden, with low levels of economic inequality and a generous welfare state, provides an important context for studying socioeconomic differentials in family structure. The authors find that, although differences by parent education in non-marital childbearing are substantial and persistent, cohabiting childbearing is common even among highly educated Swedish parents. Educational differences in family instability were small during the 1970s, but increased over time as a result of rising union disruption among less-educated parents (secondary graduates or less). Children in more advantaged families experienced substantially less change in family structure and instability over the study period. Although cohabiting parents were more likely to separate than parents married at the child's birth, differences were greater for the less-educated. Data limitations precluded investigating these differences across time. They conclude that educational differences in children's living arrangements in Sweden have grown, but remain small in international comparisons." (author's abstract)
Family life in power couples : continued childbearing and union stability among the educational elite in Sweden, 1991-2005

Inhalt: "This article studies continued childbearing and union stability among 'power couples', or dual-career couples. The determinants of these events are analyzed multivariately using longitudinal data on couples from population registers in Sweden, 1991-2005. Power couples are identified using their levels and fields of education, and their sectors of employment. Income and other variables are controlled for. The results show that power couples are more likely to continue childbearing, and are less likely to separate, than other couples. This implies that, despite the expected higher opportunity costs of childbearing and the small gains to specialization, power couples who start families are able to combine career and continued childbearing."
