(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "For about two decades, German universities have worked on structural changes to improve academic support for Ph.D. candidates. Gradually, the process of Ph.D. supervision is recognised as a key factor. It contains scientific and content-related elements. Moreover, it can be interpreted as a leadership process between professors and their Ph.D. candidates. This is particularly true for the traditional German doctoral study model which includes a position as junior scientist. Using a qualitative interview study setting including N=15 junior scientists, leadership was investigated from Ph.D. candidates perspective. Both overall effectivity and leadership by their professors as super-ordinates were appreciated. Furthermore, a large range of impressions and role descriptions was collected in the interviews. Supportive leadership was described by keywords like mentoring, partnership, organisation, and support. Less supportive leadership elicited a broader range of role descriptions. As a conclusion, the supportive leadership role descriptions are discussed as a starting point for leadership related staff development programmes in universities." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The article presents the main results of a survey of doctoral candidates in Germany organised by Thesis e. V., an association of doctoral candidates and doctorates. The study covers a wide range of themes, such as the motivation for taking up a doctorate, the funding of doctorates and the organisation of supervision. The study indicates that there is no standardised way of getting a doctorate. More precisely, the situation of doctoral candidates differs according to subject, type of doctorate and sex." Internationaler Wissenschaftsstandort Deutschland? : Eckpunkte qualitativer Internationalisierung der Doktorandenausbildung am Beispiel des Modells "Internationales Doktorandenforum"
Titelübersetzung:A location of research? : key points of qualitative internationalisation of doctoral training by the example of the 'International Forum of Doctoral Candidates'

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Whereas the aims of internationalising the research sector in Germany and attracting international junior academics are politically postulated, they are first of all measured in quantitative terms. The open question is how the integration of foreign junior academics in the German scientific environment can be supported and organised more effectively. One possibility of qualitative internationalisation lies in the institutionalisation of special modules, curricula and meeting opportunities for international doctoral candidates, as they are realised in the 'International Forum for Doctoral Candidates'. Based on the experiences gained within this forum, basis principles of qualitative internationalisation of doctoral training are extracted." (author's abstract)
Education staff and students under neoliberal pressure : a British-German comparison
Titelübersetzung:Lehrpersonal und Studenten unter dem Druck des Neoliberalismus : Deutschland und Großbritannien im Vergleich
Autor/in:
Pritchard, Rosalind
Quelle: Beiträge zur Hochschulforschung, Jg. 27 (2005) H. 4, S. 6-29
Inhalt: "This paper aims to compare the way in which neo-liberal trends are impacting on the attitudes and values of staff and students in the United Kingdom and Germany. Research is based upon qualitative and quantitative data from a dozen university institutions in each country, where individual interviews were conducted with staff, and questionnaires were completed both by them and by their students. In both countries many current trends are not deeply accepted or internalised by staff. There are startling differences in student satisfaction, perceived human relationships within the academe, as well as working conditions in the higher education sector. Though in many respects the same kind of re-structuring is taking place in each system, there is only partial convergence in attitudes and values between the German and British respondents in this study."
