(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Highly qualified women often face career disadvantages after the birth of their children. For women in academia, the balance between professional and family duties cannot be taken for granted either. In addition to other factors, the private sphere does play an important role in women's career prospects. Many female academics expect their partners to help with the children. However, women still maintain primary responsibility for children and as a result their academic careers often suffer." (author's abstract)

Inhalt: "The Generations and Gender Survey (GGS) is one of the two pillars of the Generations and Gender Programme designed to improve understanding of demographic and social development and of the factors that influence these developments. This article describes how the theoretical perspectives applied in the survey, the survey design and the questionnaire are related to this objective. The key features of the survey include panel design, multidisciplinarity, comparability, context-sensitivity, inter-generational and gender relationships. The survey applies the life course approach, focussing on the processes of childbearing, partnership dynamics, home leaving, and retiring. The selection of topics for data collection mainly follows the criterion of theoretically grounded relevance to explaining one or more of the mentioned processes. A large portion of the survey deals with economic aspects of life, such as economic activity, income, and economic well-being; a comparably large section is devoted to values and attitudes. Other domains covered by the survey include gender relationships, household composition and housing, residential mobility, social networks and private transfers, education, health, and public transfers. The third chapter of the article describes the motivations for their inclusion. The GGS questionnaire is designed for a face-to-face interview. It includes the core that each participating country needs to implement in full, and four optional sub-modules on nationality and ethnicity, on previous partners, on intentions of breaking up, and on housing, respectively. The participating countries are encouraged to include also the optional sub-modules to facilitate comparative research on these topics." (author's abstract)

(ICA2)

Inhalt: "'Catching up' modernization - a process taking place in female life - is to a high degree determined by the division of labour between the sexes. In this paper we explore the conditions of division of labour within the family. Who cares for the children, who does the housework, and is this what women had in mind? Analysing data from a quantitative survey in two regional districts in Baden-Württemberg, the authors look for the social factors that influence the pattern of division of labour within the family on the one hand ('reality') and that cause satisfaction or dissatisfaction with the given situation on the other hand ('vision'). In addition to the variables age, education and parenthood, we consider the influence of the degree of employment of the women and their partners and of the women's net income. As a result, we found that women are still the main responsible persons for family work or reproductive work but that they strive for a much more equal division of labour. The 'reality' of division of labour within the family is shown to be determined by vertical factors of inequality, i.e., the women's degree of employment and net income, while differences regarding 'visions' are much more caused by level of education and age." Sharing of home responsibilities between professionally employed woman and their husbands
Autor/in:
Biernat, Monica; Wortman, Camille B.
Quelle: Journal of personality and social psychology, Vol. 60 (1991) No. 6, S. 844-860
Inhalt: "A sample of 139 married couples with young children and with relatively equal status
careers (wives were university professors or businesswomen) were interviewed about
work and home life. Considerable, traditional inequity in the distribution of child-care
tasks and chore responsibility was noted, but women were generally satisfied with
their husbands' home involvement. In the academic sample, the longer hours each spouse
worked, the more child care the other performed; in the business sample, child-care
involvement was largely determined by the husband's work hours, income, and education.
Overall, women were more self-critical than were men about their performance in home
roles, and women's role performance was rated more highly by husbands than by themselves.
Women professionals' continued use of traditional sex role standards and the importance
of attending to both partners' perspectives in studies of married life are discussed."
