(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article aims to analyze a specific discourse on the careers of female and male chemists in the journal Nachrichten aus der Chemie. The article is based on the assumption that the scientific culture in the field of chemistry frames these careers. Are chemists' careers presented in a gender-sensitive way? And if so, how does this presentation differ? Based on content analyses of the Nachrichten, the study shows that the chemists' careers follow a multi-annual development process which is determined by a chronology of identified career steps. These generally go hand in hand with an increase in prestige or status in the community. A key characteristic of a successful career in chemistry is having to overcome difficulties at every stage in one's career. In conclusion, it is apparent that (1) the careers of male and female chemists follow a career path which is full of obstacles and apparently leaves no space for a private life, without regard to sex and gender roles; (2) female chemists do climb the career ladder, but these women are presented as male/ masculine chemists. (3) The journal does not generally refer to sex and gender; where gender does play a role, it is presented as an obstacle which women have to overcome." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This paper examines the interplay between intensifying competition among scientific institutions, on the one hand, and career opportunities of young scientist, on the other hand, using chemistry-departments in German universities and non-academic research institutes as an example. Drawing on Bourdieu, the authors construct and analyze the filed in which institutional competition takes place. The power relations in the field are structured by the relative amount of 'pure scientific capital' and/or 'institutional capital' available. In an analysis of professorial appointments they show that the field's structure has little impact on junior scientsits' career opportunities. In contrast to the US, where pervasive institutional competition goes hand in hand with a high degree of social closure in academic careers, the authors find that career opportunities are (still) relatively open in the German case, in spite of growing competition. This openness is due to the special institutional framework that provides the German academic field with a relatively high degree of autonomy. As recent changes in science policy aim to alter the institutional framework, they also jeopardize the autonomy of the academic field." (author's abstract)

Inhalt: "This article presents quantitative results of a study of 139 academic women in the chemical sciences who participated in a professional development program sponsored by the Committee on the Advancement of Women Chemists. The study investigated variables frequently examined in the vocational psychology of women: approaches to achievement, coping strategies, career advancement, the home-work interface, workplace climate, and mentoring. The article presents and discusses results in the context of unique issues faced by women in scientific careers." (author's abstract)

The research lab: a chilly place for graduate women

Ferreira, Maria M.

Inhalt: "Ph.D.'s in most graduate science programs require that graduate students spend large amounts of time conducting research in science laboratories. As a result, the environment in the research lab is key to the success or failure of graduate students, particularly women. This article is a case study of two graduate women in a chemistry department at a large research university. In-depth interviews, field notes from a support group for graduate women in science, and departmental records were used to examine the relationship between key factors of their work environment and the high attrition rate of graduate women in the department. Analyses of the data indicated that the social climate in the research lab, shaped by the attitudes and behaviors of the women's male colleagues and/ or research advisors, created a 'chilly place' for the female graduate students."
