Inhalt: "The issue of gender and excellence has been an issue on the European science policy agenda since the early 2000s. Taking the recent report by the EC expert group on Gender and Excellence as its base, this contribution explores the gender challenge in research funding across Europe. It deals, firstly, with the role of key funding organisations in promoting gender equality in research funding and, secondly, with gender differences in the success rates for obtaining research funding in 33 countries. The contribution demonstrates that European countries show large variations in terms of their national and organisational policies related to gender in research funding. The Nordic countries are among the most active, with a longterm tradition in gender-equality promotion, but some other countries have also become active in this area more recently (notably Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Flanders, the UK, Ireland and Spain). Comparative analysis of the data an success rates shows that there are no systematic differences between women and men, although there is some variation in certain countries and/or disciplinary areas, mostly in favour of men." Inhalt: "Although European policy initiatives to advance the position of women in Academia (and especially in science) have proliferated, both at national and EU levels, serious inequities of many kinds remain. This situation is exposed and investigated in this outstanding book, which presents reports and discussions from a two-day conference held at the Law Faculty of Lund University in December 2004. The participants - law professors and social scientists - present detailed reports on domestic experiences and regulations in eight European countries: Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. Among the many provocative issues raised and explored are the following: - 'positive action' in theory and practice; - the progress of the EU Commission's strategy to integrate equal opportunity into all Community policies and activities; - the motives for promoting women in Academia; - the importance not only of setting targets but of funding to achieve them; - the extensive group of part-timers and fixed-term employees at the margin of the traditional academic career; - the importance of creating a situation in Academia were 'woman excellence' shows; and - the development of 'marketable' research disciplines embodied in private research institutes." Ausgaben für die tertiäre Bildung in Europa 2002

Schmidt, Pascal
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This paper illustrates how european countries, USA and Japan funded their tertiary education systems in 2002. It shows different financing patterns, how sectors of the economy participate to the funding of tertiary institutions and how institutions spent their resources." (author's abstract)
Frauen und Männer in Bildungsgängen des Tertiärbereichs
Titelübersetzung:Women and men in tertiary education
Autor/in:
Dunne, Mary
Inhalt: "More women than men are being educated to tertiary level in most EU member states. According to the latest data (for 1998-99), women represent the majority of those enrolled in university or equivalent programmes in 12 of the 15 countries and account for an even larger proportion of those graduating. Moreover, the number of women with tertiary level education seems to be increasing faster than that of men throughout the Union. Nevertheless, there are still far fewer women than men enrolled in science and technology subject areas and women are significantly less likely to go on to postgraduate study. Equally, a larger proportion of women than men tend to participate in more practical/ technical/ occupationally-specific programmes (Type B) as opposed to more theoretically-based/ research preparatory ones or programmes giving access to professions with high skill requirements (Type A)."
